In the early 90s, Philadelphia gifted the alternative music scene with Riverside, an earnest group of musicians whose songs wove a gossamer melange of dream-infused rock, tinged with the nostalgic jangle of bygone days, and laced with a subtle undercurrent of melancholy. This ensemble, led by the Kochanowicz brothers—Keith, with his haunting vocals and deft touch on the guitar and organ, and Glenn, with his deep bass lines and harmonies, complemented by Kenneth Jackson’s lead guitar riffs and Geoff Verne’s rhythmic drums—emerged as a beacon of melodic resilience in the face of the music industry’s capricious nature.

Yet, it was with their debut album, One, that Riverside truly soared, embodying the essence of spectral reverberations reminiscent of Echo & the Bunnymen, and the heartfelt yearnings akin to The Smiths. Their sound, however, was distinctly American in its raw passion, an echo of an era that if transplanted to the misty landscapes of Scotland, would have found kinship with the likes of The Lightning Seeds and Belle and Sebastian.

In an age when grunge’s gritty realism dominated the airwaves, Riverside stood as anachronistic heroes, champions of melodic grace in an industry veering towards the jagged edges of rebellion. Yet, the album One remained a steadfast testament to the timeless allure of melody, infused with a British sensibility and the soulful depth of Philadelphia.

The album’s tracks, like Cinnamon Eyes and Waterfall, became anthems of a generation, echoing through the halls of college radio and flickering across the screens of a darker MTV landscape. Cinnamon Eyes, with its buoyant, shimmering jangle-pop reverie and playful percussive beat, captures the essence of an unabashed love song, while Waterfall, with its cascading melodic guitar hooks that flow like their namesake, accompanied by chime-like guitar accents that dance in the wind, perfectly encapsulates the earnestness of a golden era straddling the early ’80s post-punk and the burgeoning alternative rock scene.

The album One stands as a sanctuary for the hopeless romantics and dreamers, a portal to a golden-hued era of alternative rock, its timeless sound never fading into obscurity but rather aging like fine wine, growing more profound with each listen.

In recent years, Riverside has rekindled the flames of their legacy, gracing stages alongside The Ocean Blue in sold-out reunion shows, with whispers of more to come in 2024. In a thrilling development, Riverside has partnered with Lost in Ohio to bring One to vinyl, a first for this cherished debut. This Kickstarter-funded reissue is a call to arms for those who wish to hold a piece of music history in their hands, complete with t-shirts, posters, and a dive back into the riverside of yesteryears.

With the March 1st deadline approaching, the band’s Kickstarter campaign is a call to action for those interested in contributing to the revival of the band’s legacy.

“The album was the other side of the coin of Margaret Thatcher’s Britain: I never felt it was political at the time, but it seems it now. Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret was the secret seedy life that went on behind the mask of Conservative Britain.” – Marc Almond

Four decades on, Soft Cell’s inaugural full-length offering, “Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret,” still demands its place in the limelight as a beacon in the world of decadent electronic cadence and synth-pop. Drawing from the moody overtones of post-punk, the lilting notes of French chanson, the soulful echoes of America, gritty drama, and seedy nightlife, this album—after all these years—has themes that flirtatiously wink at the past while nodding to the now. It’s carved a path for many a synth-armed duo, stitching together the mysterious with a pop garnish that heralded a fresh era.

Unveiled to the world in those halcyon days of November of ’81, this collection of ten tracks, as Almond so eloquently describes, “tells a story of a bored ordinary bloke seething with his life wanting more and looking for excitement and adventure in a red neon lit Soho world of red-light cabarets, prostitutes and sex dwarves, looking back at his youth and wondering what happened.”

Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret” blessed us with melodies that defined the era: the ubiquitous Tainted Love (oh, the anthem of ’81!), the poignant Bedsitter, and the bittersweet farewell of Say Hello Wave Goodbye. Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret captured the initial essence of Soft Cell, a decidedly pop chapter.  By 1982, that chapter closed, making way for something a tad more… nocturnal. “We were done and dusted with that. The next one, was much darker,” Dave Ball reminisces.  “All very weird and extreme, from living in a council flat and suddenly you’re flying on Concorde to New York.”

The popularity of  Soft Cell’s sensuous, unapologetically queer take on Gloria Jones’ soul-soaked Tainted Love across the pond cannot be overstated. Staying atop the Billboard Hot 100 for an astonishing 43 consecutive weeks, the song opened American ears to the likes of The Cure and Depeche Mode.

Now, Mercury-EMI / UMR is celebrating Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret with various supplementary extras and rarities. The 6-CD, 98-track Super Deluxe Edition is the ultimate version of the album and features 40 unreleased pieces.

CD1 features Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret, newly remastered in 2023 by Barry Grint, plus the A & B sides in their original 7” versions, including Torch, What!, the band’s first Phonogram single A Man Could Get Lost and Memorabilia produced by Mute’s Daniel Miller along with the 2016 edit of Fun City and a new edit of Persuasion, both only released on 12” at the time.

CD2 Non-Stop Extended Cabaret contains the entire album in extended 12” form, made up of Dave Ball’s 2018 studio reworkings of the album using only the original studio parts, plus the original “Bedsitter” 12” which all parties agreed just could not be improved upon. Also featured are new remixes of “Memorabilia” by techno legend The Hacker, Mute founder Daniel Miller, and a new Dave Ball extended of “A Man Could Get Lost.”

CD3 entitled Non-Stop Eclectic Cabaret is a treasure trove of rarities including BBC session highlights, a selection of demos, outtakes, audio from BBC TV and radio appearances on The Richard Skinner ShowThe Old Grey Whistle TestTop Of The Pops / Top Of The Pops 2 and The Oxford Road Show as well as selections from Heat: The Remixes, including Richard X’s now legendary version of “Seedy Films.”

CD4 is Non-Stop Instrumental Cabaret, which presents the full album instrumentally for the first time and six original 1981 demos, five of which are previously unreleased. These demos include a Daniel Miller-produced version of “Tainted Love,” “Say Hello, Wave Goodbye,” and a version of “Sex Dwarf,” which was previously presumed lost.

CD5 brings together the original 12” A and B-sides of 1981 and 1982 under the banner Non-Stop Original Cabaret, including “Memorabilia,” “Tainted Love,” “Say Hello Wave Goodbye,” and the standalone singles “Torch” and “What!.” Soft Cell were rightly hailed in their day for pouring their creative efforts and energies into the extended form, and these pioneering sides have become legendary.

CD6 includes the album performed live in full, plus “Torch” and “Memorabilia,” recorded live at Hammersmith’s Eventim Apollo in November 2021. There are also three tracks from the band’s jubilant London O2 Arena show in September 2018.

Included in the beautiful 10” x 10” package housing the deluxe edition, is an essay on the story of the album by Adrian Thrills, including new interviews with Marc and Dave as well as full song lyrics, contemporary photography along, album, and single sleeve scans, and compiler’s credits from Chris Smith.

The 6-disc super deluxe edition is the ultimate representation of an album that defined a genre and a decade. Soft Cell is still active, touring and releasing new music. Their latest album, Happiness Not Included, is the first in 20 years. Additionally, they received great reviews for their collaboration with the Pet Shop Boys, Purple Zone, last year. As Marc Almond describes their enduring of Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret: “Dave and I will carry on being creative, but it will be hard for us to produce another record that’s loved in quite the same way as Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret was loved.”

The Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret deluxe edition is set to be released on October 20th. See the full tracklisting for the CD and Vinyl edition below.

It’s been four decades since New Order unleashed their iconic dance hit, “Blue Monday.” The track not only dominated the airwaves, but it also made a significant impact on the dance scene, becoming the biggest-selling 12″ record of all time. And it’s no wonder why. From the relentless kick drum attack, to the infectious handclaps, and the gregorian chant chorus sampled from Kraftwerk, “Blue Monday” is a timeless classic that still sounds just as fresh today as it did 40 years ago.

But what’s even more fascinating is the story behind the record’s artwork. Designed by the legendary Peter Saville, the die-cut sleeve was a nod to the look of computer floppy disks, making it a must-have for fans. However, the cost of manufacturing the intricate design was so high that the band actually lost money on each one.

And as if celebrating the 40th anniversary of “Blue Monday” wasn’t enough, New Order has just announced that they’ll be headlining at Primavera Sound in both Barcelona and Madrid. They’ll share the stage with an incredible lineup that includes recent tour mates Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode, Blur, Kendrick Lamar, Halsey, Rosalia, and Calvin Harris, among others.

But before they hit Spain, New Order is taking the US by storm with a string of shows surrounding their appearance at SXSW in Austin, Texas. Fans in Dallas, San Antonio, Houston, and New Orleans are in for a real treat.

Zachery Allan Starkey is currently opening for New Order for some of their US tour dates this spring. His unique musical style, influenced by Giorgio Moroder, Patrick Cowley, and Lou Reed, draws from multiple genres to make a statement about the modern world through his critically acclaimed LP, FEAR CITY, which features collaborations with Bernard Sumner.

Check out the full list of New Order live dates below.

New Order US Tour Dates:

  • 9th March – Dallas, TX – The Factory in Deep Ellum
  • 11th March – San Antonio, TX – AT&T Center
  • 13th March – Austin, TX – ACL Live @ Moody Theatre (SXSW)

There were disparate tribes in London that I think the Batcave brought together, because there would be the punky types, the Gothy types, there were also the rockabillys, skinheads… there was a definite tribal thing.

Every decent goth knows the wonderous lure of the Batcave. Hell, even those who merely dabble into the darker aspects of the 1980s know the legend of the Gargoyle Club on 69 Dean Street in London. It’s the birthplace of goth as we know it, a catatonic blend of styles and sounds, looks that were glamorous yet camp, and props that would be just as cozy in a haunted house. But the real story—the in depth story with all the raunchy details—has never been revealed until now.

Ladies Room at Fouberts by Mick Mercer

‘Young Limbs Rise Again’, the story of The Batcave Nightclub 1982-1985 is a collection that maps out the history of the goth subculture one song and story at a time. With over 90 tracks on the CD release, 62 on the 6 LP set and 20 on the 2 LP release, Young Limbs Rise Again is the comprehensive Batcave guide.

The choice of music by Hamish was fantastic. I remember a lot of Cramps, Bauhaus, Bowie, Iggy, Siouxsie & the Banshees. Nights at the Batcave were hot, lots of drinks and other goodies, beautiful youth, incestuous fun, lots of noise and adrenalin, laughing and bickering also… It was a great buzz, innovative and daring.

Hamish Macdonald, the Batcave DJ and frontman of Sexbeat, set the mood within the walls of the foggy (and strawberry-scented) club. The Young Limbs Rise Again boxsets disclose all of Hamish’s favorite and essential tracks—”We had this rule: no soul, funk or disco”—that include songs by goth staples such as The Cure, Sisters of Mercy, Virgin Prunes, and Killing Joke. But there’s also proto-goth and glammy tracks from artists such as New York Dolls, Roxy Music, Suicide and Mick Ronson.

Rozz Williams by Mick Mercer

The Batcave’s live performances were paramount as well: the club hosted legendary artists such as Christian Death and Marc and the Mambas, while it ricocheted bands like Alien Sex Fiend and Specimen into the vast expanses of the subculture’s history. Stories about the popularity and importance of the club is divulged via the accompanying 80-page hardback book—which is just as crucial as the compilation. From unseen photos of club go-ers, to an extensive breakdown of artwork and flyers, as well as information about the Batcave at NYC’s own Danceteria, the book is a goldmine of art, inspiration and history.

Brooklyn’s A Place To Bury Strangers’ uncompromising 2009 album Exploding Head has been expanded and newly remastered, featuring ten bonus tracks, including rarities, unreleased material, and three blistering covers. Out now on Mute/BMG and available in Deluxe 2-LP, 2-CD, and digital formats, Brooklyn’s A Place To Bury Strangers’ uncompromising 2009 album Exploding Head has been expanded and newly remastered, featuring ten bonus tracks, including rarities, unreleased material, and three blistering covers of tracks by Love and Rockets, The 13th Floor Elevators, and David Bowie. Exploding Head is considered APTBS’ most notable record, garnering them critical praise and a cult fanbase.

In celebration of Exploding Head (13th Anniversary Edition), the current members of A Place To Bury Strangers went into Death Castle on Sept. 25th to film a special live performance of Exploding Head…the entire original 10-track album from start to finish. APTBS will also be performing songs off the album on tour in Asia (Nov.) and Europe (Jan./Feb.) Click here for a full list of dates and to purchase tickets.

Filmed by Ebru Yildiz and Mitchell King, with visuals by Heather Bickford, the recording proves the album has lost none of its intensity or power and serves as a timely reminder why the band (vocalist/guitarist Oliver Ackermann, bassist John Fedowitz and drummer Sandra Fedowitz is known for their explosive live performances with all-consuming visuals.

Watch the exhilarating live performance below:

Formed in Brooklyn, New York in 2003, A Place To Bury Strangers emerged on the scene out of Oliver Ackermann’s psychotropic vision. Combining post-punk, noise-rock, shoegaze, psychedelia, and avant-garde music, APTBS has been delighting and astonishing audiences for close to two decades. The band is known for their vicious live performances overloaded with all-consuming visuals, experimental sonic warfare, and treacherous stage antics.

Leading up to Friday’s (10/21) anniversary release, APTBS released two singles (accompanied by new videos for each), including the previously unreleased B-side “Take It All” and “Don’t Save Your Love (2022 Remaster),” as well as dropped a trailer for the album (watch here). APTBS also put together an Exploding Head centric playlist for their fans, titled Exploding Hits (listen here).

The limited-edition 2-LP set (available exclusively at the band’s web store) is pressed on transparent clear wax and housed in a numbered gatefold sleeve, featuring newly designed artwork, 12” original cover art, and new liner notes by music journalist Tris McCall. The 2-CD set is housed in a reverse board 6-panel DigiFile and features a 16-page booklet with newly designed artwork, as well as McCall’s liner notes. In addition, a 1-LP Standard Edition is being offered, featuring the newly remastered original 10-track album, pressed on transparent red wax.

In conjunction with the anniversary release, Ackermann’s hand-made effects pedal company Death By Audio announced their new EXPLODING HEAD Triple Delay Pedal and limited-edition EXPLODING HEAD BUNDLE (500 units worldwide) on Friday (10/21),  in partnership with Reverb.com, which sold out in less than 24 hours. The bundle included the limited-edition 2-LP set of Exploding Head (13th Anniversary Edition), the EXPLODING HEAD Triple Delay Pedal (seen below), “Ego Death” enamel pin, “Deadbeat” iron-on patch, “Exploding Head’ guitar pick, 18”x24” foldout lyric poster w/artwork, and glow-in-the-dark-sticker.

Death By Audio’s EXPLODING HEAD Triple Delay Pedal (watch demo here) resurrects the spine-tingling digital echoes of the long-dormant Ghost Delay pedal with expanded controls and a streamlined, ultra-small, pedalboard-friendly footprint. It’s the ultimate triple-delay dream maker/destroyer. Ackermann shares, “This pedal improves on the sound I used around the time I was writing and recording Exploding Head. I would do this trick where I’d link multiple delay lines to give the guitar this spooky, weird metallic sound. It’s more intense than a chorus and has a real, unnatural sound. That sound exists in the EXPLODING HEAD pedal and was key to many of the songs on the record.”

For the new wave fans who dare to add more vinyl to their collections, The Human League has announced the release of a new box set comprising four of their groundbreaking albums, released between 1981-1990 via Virgin Records.  The news follows the reissue of the remix album Love And Dancing, initially released in 1982, which was recently pressed on white vinyl for Record Store Day.

The Virgin Years box set features the classic album Dare, the still-influential phoenix that rose from the ashes of the band’s influential and synth-heavy first incarnation, and also includes Fascination EP, Hysteria, Crash, and Romantic, on exciting new limited edition coloured vinyl.

In the Spring of 1983, the group released the six-track EP Fascination, which brought together the singles “(Keep Feeling) Fascination” in its extended forms, and “Mirror Man,” along with the classic b-sides “You Remind Me Of Gold,”Hard Times, and I Love You Too Much.

The group re-recorded the latter track for the Hysteria album, which appeared in May 1984. The LP contained three hit singles “The Lebanon,”Life On Your Own,” and “Louise.”

Two years later, the band would experiment even further by mostly recording the album Crash with the production team of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. The gamble paid off, and it returned The Human League to the top of the US charts with the song Human.

After a break in 1988 for a multi-platinum selling greatest hits album, the group returned with Romantic?’which was yet another move forward with their sound, the hit single “Heart Like A Wheel” saw the band reunite with DARE producer Martin Rushent. However, after a dozen years with the label, it was to be their last album for Virgin. The band continues to record, have hits and tour the world to this day……but that’s a story for another boxset.

The box set comes out on the 11th of November and is available for pre-order now.

Just in time for its 30th anniversary, the highly anticipated reissue of The Cure’s 1992 album Wish has finally been announced. The deluxe edition of the album will be released this October in a variety of formats, including a 3CD edition that will include the original remastered album, 24 previously unreleased tracks, and the Lost Wishes instrumental EP.

Wish, an album that charted number 1 in the UK, and number 2 on the US Billboard 100, was originally released in 1992 and featured the singles “Friday I’m In Love,” “High,” and “A Letter To Elise.”

The expanded edition of Wish continues The Cure’s campaign of deluxe editions of all their classic albums, following the release four years ago of the remix album Mixed Up, and 12 years after their last studio album, Disintegration, was reissued.

The deluxe edition of Wish is set for release on October 7th via UMC/Fiction/Polydor via CD, deluxe CD, black vinyl, and digitally, with the double vinyl edition to follow November 25th. Additionally, the band will include a replica cassette of Lost Wishes, the rare EP of four instrumental Wish outtakes that have only ever been released as a mail-order cassette via The Cure’s fan club.

The 3CD deluxe edition of Wish will include the original album, newly remastered by Robert Smith and Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios, on disc one.

Disc two features 21 previously unreleased demos, four of which are studio vocal demos from 1990 and 17 instrumental demos from 1991, nine of which are completely unreleased songs.

Disc three includes the Lost Wishes EP,  a collection of 4 songs that have never been released on CD or digitally. Also included is the previously unreleased song “A Wendy Band” from the band’s Manor Studio sessions in 1992, a previously unheard mix of “From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea,” five 12-inch mixes, and a previously unreleased live version of “End” recorded in Paris in October of 1992.

On developing the songs on ‘Wish’ during demo sessions at The Live House in Cornwall that continued at Farmyard Studios in the Cotswolds. Robert Smith explains: “We got around 40 songs put down during those two sessions,” adding, “We were on fire!”

Listening to the album again in 2022 Smith notes: “There’s a side to the album which I had kind of forgotten, a very gentle, yearning thing which is quite beautiful.

”Trust’ is one of the best things we’ve ever done I think, it’s played with great feeling, and ‘To Wish Impossible Things’ is another gorgeous, melancholic piece… in fact it could well be my favourite song on the record.”

Smith also noted that while the original album “sounded excellent”, there was a glitch that made it onto the final record: “It was too late to do anything about it; the album was out, and we were off around the world again. It has really bugged for me for a very long time.”

During this year’s remastering process, the frontman was given the opportunity to fix the mistake. “It has taken 30 years, but finally, finally my Wish has come true.”

The full tracklist is below. Plus you can listen to “Uyea Sound” (Dim-D Mix) from the Lost Wishes cassette.:

The deluxe edition of Wish is out on October 7th, with the vinyl to follow on November 25th.

The After the Snow tour’s first leg runs through Florida, and the southwest throughout March, with a pause until June.

The second leg begins in Portland on June 8th, running through cities on the west coast, with a stop at The Echo in Los Angeles on June 19th, before heading to Colorado, and circle back through the Midwest.

“What I do is not entertainment.”

Pat Fish, who performed as The Jazz Butcher for nearly four decades, has died at the age of 64. A post on Pat Fish’s official Facebook page states that the versatile and brilliant musician “died suddenly but peacefully yesterday evening.” On October 3rd, Fish was scheduled to perform a web concert, however at show time, Fish appeared live to inform his audience he was not feeling well and would be re-scheduling the performance for the following week. By means of explanation for his ill health, he offered that he had been suffering from sleep apnea. The cause of death is still unknown, and he had been battling poor health for some time, but his passing has left a major void amongst his friends, loved ones, and the music world.

“Very sad to announce that my old friend Pat Fish died suddenly but peacefully on Tuesday evening,” said friend and longtime collaborator Max Eider in a statement. “Pat rocked my world in every way and his death leaves a big hole in my life and in my memory, much of which was only stored in his outsized brain. Goodbye mate and thanks for everything. I’m going to miss you.”

Contemporaries and colleagues The Monochrome Set also paid tribute to their kindred spirit on their Facebook:

“A wonderful human being…he supported The Monochrome Set at their Tokyo gigs in 2014. He was also due to be a label mate as he’d recently finished recording his first album for Tapete. It’s devastating news.”

Born Patrick Huntrods in West London, Fish was ” too young to be a hippie and just a little too old to be a punk.” Pat Fish reminisced about growing up in an era where “the Bonzo Dog Band appeared on children’s television, Syd Barrett was on Top of the Pops and the Adult World was represented in shows like The Avengers and The Prisoner.” Fish moved early in his life to Northampton; he went on to study Classics at Merton College, Oxford, graduating in 1980. Oxford didn’t fuel his imagination too much, however, and he ended up traveling down a musical path, forming bands like Nightshift,  The Sonic Tonix, and the Institution, which featured Max Eider on guitar, Rolo McGinty (later of The Woodentops), and Jonathan Stephenson.

In North America, records like Bloody Nonsense and Distressed Gentlefolk became college radio staples before releasing a series of albums for Creation Records between 1988-1995.

Taking inspiration less from glam rock and more from Eno, Syd Barrett, John Cale, greaser rock and more obscure 70s artists, The Jazz Butcher debuted in Oxford on 20 February 1982 with Alice Thompson (The Woodentops), Owen Jones, and Max Eider. Fish went on to write and release fifteen albums of original music, three live albums and many singles and compilations, often collaborating with friends. Bauhaus/Love & Rockets bassist David J, members of The Woodentops, Spacemen 3’s Sonic Boom, German band M Walking On The Water, Chelsea Paris, The Black Watch, and Max Eider all lent their talents to his stylings.

Baby piano cries

Sofia Coppola’s film examining the Chanel Fall-Winter 2021/22 Haute Couture show will be revealed on July 6th at 3pm, Paris time. In the preview released by the fashion house, we were treated to the familiar strains of an interesting choice: 1984’s “Dazzle”, by Siouxsie and the Banshees, the second single from their sixth studio album, Hyæna.

“Quite a lot of this…came from visiting Israel for the first time,” Sioux told Melody Maker in 1992. ’The sea of fluid mercury’ in the lyric, is the Dead Sea.”

Set in the Palais Galliera, actress and model Margaret Qualley (daughter of Andie MacDowell) is highlighted by Neo-Renaissance architecture. Dazzling, indeed.

And watch the original video for Siouxsie and the Banshees’ “Dazzle” below:
