In the pantheon of gothic rock, few names shine as brightly in the dark as Rozz Williams, the enigmatic frontman of Christian Death. Known for his poetic lyrics, captivating performances, and pioneering spirit, Williams left an indelible mark on the music world and the gothic subculture. Now, a new documentary spearheaded by Williams’ close friend and collaborator, Nico B, seeks to delve deep into the life and legacy of this iconic figure, offering personal insights and untold stories.

Nico B, who has previously worked with Williams, brings a unique perspective to the project, combining personal anecdotes with a vast array of interviews from those who stood by Williams throughout his career. This untitled documentary aims not just to chart the history of a musician but to capture the essence of a cultural icon whose influence transcends his music.

Set against the iconic backdrop of the Masonic Lodge at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, a place as storied and rich in history as Williams’ own legacy, a special fundraiser event on March 15th will support the final stages of the documentary’s editing and post-production. Hollywood Forever, the resting place of numerous legends, provides a fitting venue to honor Rozz Williams (whose ashes are interred there), offering a bridge between past and present artistic luminaries.

The event promises an intimate glimpse into Williams’ world, featuring performances from those who shared his journey, including Gitane Demone, Paul Roessler, and Eva O, each bringing their own connection to Williams’ life and work to the stage. The inclusion of special guest Vincent Price from Body Count adds an exciting layer, blending genres and generations in a tribute to Williams’ diverse artistic reach.

For fans and newcomers alike, the event offers a range of experiences. The VIP experience, limited to 20 attendees, provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to tour Rozz Williams’ memorial site, offering a tangible connection to his legacy. This, along with the chance to meet and greet band members and secure autographs, makes for an unforgettable experience. General admission opens the door to a wider audience, inviting all to partake in this unique celebration of Williams’ life and artistry.

The evening’s schedule is meticulously crafted, featuring a screening of “PIG,” a film by Williams and Nico B, followed by performances that promise to immerse attendees in the world Williams created. The event not only serves as a tribute but as a vital step in ensuring the documentary reaches completion, with proceeds going towards this goal.

The documentary, enriched by interviews with 23 collaborators and friends, including Eva O, Gitane Demone, and Rikk Agnew, aims to paint a comprehensive portrait of Williams. Coupled with a treasure trove of music, photographs, art, and video works, it’s set to be a definitive account of Williams’ life and influence.

As the event approaches, fans are encouraged to remember Rozz Williams, not just as a musician but also as an artist who pushed boundaries and left an indelible mark on the world. Through the documentary and tribute, his legacy continues to inspire, reminding us of the power of art to transcend time and space.

The underground music community is rallying around Charles Levi, the thunderous bass force behind My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult, Pigface, and more, with the release of the compilation “Retronomicon.” Levi, a titan in the industrial scene, can be heard on the soundtracks for  CoolWorld and The Crow.

Sadly, Levi is facing some tough times: namely, vascular dementia- which has led to leg amputation, as well as daily kidney dialysis and neuropathy that affects the motor function of his fingers.  A veritable who’s who of North American electronic and industrial artists, each putting their own twist on the synth-laden tracks that defined an era, have created the album Retronomicon as a sonic salute to Levi. The album is a modern reimagining of the sounds that Levi helped pioneer, all while throwing a lifeline his way.

The album is out now via Para Luna Records: every penny earned from sales and streaming will go straight to helping him navigate his health hurdles. He’s given so much to the community, it’s time lend a hand when it’s needed most.

Listeners can contribute to the cause by purchasing the album on Bandcamp, streaming it on Spotify, or donating directly to Charles Levi’s GoFundMe.

Listen to the album below, and purchase it here:

In an era when fleeting internet fame is often pursued through social media antics and unimaginative ploys, the story of Diane Luckey stands in stark contrast as a genuine tale of serendipity and determination. During the 1980s, Luckey, a New York City cab driver, housekeeper, and au pair, quietly forged her musical identity as the frontwoman as Q Lazzarus, of Q Lazzurus and the Resurrection. In the scant hours away from her day jobs, she and her band would craft vocal harmonies, recording them on cassettes in the basement of her employer’s home. Her voice also found a place in the backdrop of Sigma Sounds Studio, where she lent her talents as a backup singer and penned jingles for various advertisements.

Confronted with a relentless stream of rejection, racism, and sexism from the industry’s gatekeepers, Luckey’s fortuitous encounter with an unsuspecting passenger seemed almost fated. Unbeknownst to her, this chance encounter would propel her from the anonymity of a New York City cab to the annals of cinematic history, cementing her story as a true exemplar of the Cinderella narrative — not spun from social media virality, but woven from the threads of real-life struggle and fated opportunity.

She played him her demo tape, to which he replied, “Oh my God, what is this and who are you?”

The passenger, as it turned out, was filmmaker Jonathan Demme, and the rest is history. Q’s deep androgynous contralto made appearances in subsequent films: “Candle Goes Away” in Something Wild, 1988’s Married To The Mob, and her cover of Talking Heads’ “Heaven” in 1993’s Philadelphia. But by far, she was best known for Silence of the Lambs, in the infamous, haunting scene where Buffalo Bill seduces himself in the mirror to her song “Goodbye Horses.” The juxtaposition of her rich, honeyed voice and the horrors of his sewing room burned in the minds of millions.

As “Goodbye Horses” climbed the charts, Diane Luckey intriguingly stepped back from the limelight. After a fruitful stint in the UK, touring with her band, penning a plethora of songs, and becoming the life of every party, Luckey returned to New York City, where she dabbled in the pulsating beats of house music. However, as the ’90s drew to a close, so did the musical chapter of Q Lazzarus.

Embarking on a markedly different journey, Luckey ventured into the depths of South America, immersing herself in a tapestry of cultures and experiences. This adventurous spirit later led her to the chilly Alaskan waters, where she spent six months aboard a fishing boat. These adventures, far from the spotlight of her musical past, painted a portrait of a woman on a quest for personal growth. Luckey exemplified a relentless pursuit of diverse and transformative adventures.

Psyche, MGMT, Bloc Party, and Deftones covered Goodbye Horses, which also took on new life with Gen Z in TikTok sounds, but as time went on, Luckey stayed behind the wheel. For many years, she worked as a bus driver in Staten Island, content to live a life of privacy. At the time of her death, however, it was revealed that Luckey had been working with filmmaker Eva Aridjis on a feature documentary about her life.

Aridjis has spent the past four years making Goodbye Horses: The Many Lives Of Q. Lazzarus, an intimate documentary about the long-lost Luckey. The two met in an unexpected way, embarking on a friendship and collaboration until Q’s tragic unexpected passing in 2022. Eva has launched a Kickstarter campaign to try to raise the funds to finish her documentary, which features Q’s life story told through Q’s own words and music, many of which has never been heard before.

The Kickstarter video features the only footage of Q to be released in the past 30 years.

There will be an official soundtrack of Q’s songs which feature in the film that will be released, but a record label for this has yet to be determined.

If you would like to help Eva Aridjis preserve the legacy of Q. Lazzarus, the link to the Kickstarter is here.

This Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing venture, so if you are a fan of – or curious about – Q. Lazzarus, and would like to see her take her rightful place in the annals of music history, now is your chance.

This year, Dark Entries Records is also set to release a reissue of Q Lazzarus’s music. The label from San Francisco expressed, “We’ve been working on a Q Lazzarus reissue since we started the label 15 years ago, and it will finally see the light of day this year.”

I kick the gutter
Break my bones
Ancient gravestones
Watch me, watch her take the throne
She’s known as the ancient mother
Anybody else wanna touch my lover

Red Tape Pictures has unveiled a visually captivating music video for Adore by Australia’s Chiffon Magnifique, a mesmerizing reinterpretation of the well-known track originally composed by Gold Coast artist Amy Shark. This rendition is part of the compilation album House Keys II from 4000 Records, which features a distinctive array of local Brisbane talents covering songs from fellow artists in Brisbane and South-East Queensland.

At the helm of Chiffon Magnifique is Jed A. Walters, an artist with a visionary approach. Walters embraced this project as a chance to explore the intricacies of pop music craftsmanship. In his rendition of Adore, Walters delves deep into the elements that give a pop song its resonance – the melody, lyrics, and chord progressions. His choice to cover this particular song stems from a shared history and mutual experiences in the Gold Coast milieu.

“Amy Shark and my old industrial/coldwave synth-and-drums duo Tesla Cøils came up in the same little Gold Coast music venues,” says Walters. “Back in the day, the scene was narrower, and the venues were tiny, not equipped to create the subculture we enjoy in the Gold Coast today.”

In 2016, Amy Shark’s meteoric rise and the success of Adore in the Triple J Hottest 100 marked a turning point. “I became kind of jaded after that because my band didn’t really go anywhere, but it made sense,” Walters admits. “She was making commercially viable pop music, and I was making electronic industrial space-rock about cyborg dinosaurs that was super left-field.”

In the Chiffon Magnifique reinterpretation, Walters ventures into the realm of musical alchemy, shifting the song’s original major key to a more introspective and melancholic minor key. This transformation imbues the track with a new emotional depth, resonating with the influences of Sisters of Mercy, Drab Majesty, and Pixies. Walters further enhances the song’s texture by incorporating twangy guitar riffs, adding a layer of complexity and richness to the composition. This inventive approach pays homage to the original work and showcases Walters’ artistic ingenuity.

The music video, crafted by Clint Lewis of Red Tape Pictures, transports viewers into a visually enthralling and hauntingly beautiful realm. Featuring performances by Shakira Tanah, Desiré Kellson, and Heaven Arici, the video is a cinematic exploration of the central theme of adoration. Intricately designed miniatures by Jacqueline Lewis add depth and texture to the narrative.

Central to the video is Chiffon Magnifique’s poignant performance, depicted holding a mannequin, an imagery that adds to the eerie and surreal atmosphere. This creative visual representation complements the song’s transformed mood, weaving together the auditory and visual to create an immersive and thought-provoking experience.

“Clint approached me with his idea for this video,” Walters says. “He had some footage from another shoot left on the cutting room floor, so to speak. He wanted to re-film more footage with myself performing the song in the same spooky environment, with dollhouses, trinkets, junk…basically the classic environment of a tortured artist. The titular adoration comes through with the way I’m holding this mannequin and singing to her. I think it turned out super cute. Clint has an amazing approach to atmospheres and editing. I really look up to him as a filmmaker.”

Watch the video for “Adore” below:

All proceeds from this album contribute to the unwavering support of community radio station 4zzz, an entity that has played a pivotal role in Chiffon Magnifique’s artistic journey.

“We stand with you, we support you, and we urge you to ‘keep holding on, my friend.” – Johnathan|Christian

Throughout history, LGBTQ+ communities have endured profound challenges, from systemic discrimination and stark underrepresentation to harrowing health disparities and brutal hate crimes. Beyond these palpable threats, they have navigated the treacherous waters of legislative hindrances, barriers to healthcare, and deep-rooted societal prejudices. Particularly alarming is the state of mental health among LGBTQ+ youth, where the specter of suicide looms larger than in their non-LGBTQ+ peers.

Emerging from this backdrop in 1998, The Trevor Project shines as a beacon of hope. Offering LGBTQ+ youth vital counseling. It breaks the barriers of loneliness, fostering connections that underscore the limitless potential inherent in each young individual, regardless of their identity. This laudable endeavor offers more than immediate relief; it’s a clarion call of care and understanding, where every call is met with compassion. But their mission goes further, reaching out to parents and educators, advocating for spaces of warmth, acceptance, and inclusivity both at home and in schools.

Crossing the Atlantic’s vast expanse, the dark musical pairing of Johnathan|Christian unveils their poignant new single, “Résistance, Mon Amie.” Rapidly capturing attention for both their musical artistry and unwavering commitment to social causes, Johnathan|Christian has dedicated all proceeds from this single to The Trevor Project. This generous gesture aligns seamlessly with National Suicide Prevention Week, furthering their commitment to advocacy and meaningful change.

“This past summer was appalling for the gay community globally,” says Johnathan. “EVERYONE has the right to be free! What right do the most hypocritical sinners of all think they THEY have the right to judge anyone, invoking their ‘godliness’, while spewing their hatred.”

In a stirring visual narrative, the video, directed by Nick van Dyk of Purple Tree Studio, delves into the heart of adversity while simultaneously extending a hand of hope. Present-day footages of protests, marches, and detentions are seamlessly interwoven with scenes from the iconic Burt Lancaster film, Elmer Gantry. This cinematic juxtaposition serves as a poignant commentary, drawing parallels between a corrupt preacher’s venomous dogma and the present-day manifestations of hate.

“In the face of ongoing violence against the LGBTQ+ community, there’s a glimmer of hope through the power of music and visuals,” says Van Dyk. “Creating specific visuals for the track is a fantastic way to unite and amplify the LGBTQ+ movement’s message, redirecting energy away from violence. In a world marred by hate crimes and discrimination, music’s universal language and the storytelling capacity of music videos become vital tools to inspire change, fostering empathy and hope.”

Watch the video for “Résistance, Mon Amie.”

Johnathan Mooney currently resides in Los Angeles and Christian Granquist in Stockholm, Sweden. In a quaint studio nestled somewhere in the middle within Redbank, New Jersey, Christian and Johnathan crafted Résistance Mon Amie, with the deft touch of Tony Lewis on production, the composition finds its roots in tradition while embracing the pulse of contemporary sentiments.

To expand its resonance, the single has been reinterpreted in two distinct remixes. The “Neon Nights Mix” is a creation by Lee Meadows, recognized by his intriguing pseudonym, Code Name: Lola, and revered as the founder of World Goth Day. The other, the Official Martin Atkins Mix, highlights Atkins’ storied affiliations with renowned acts such as Public Image Ltd, Ministry, Nine Inch Nails, Pigface, and Killing Joke.

With a spirit of inclusivity and solidarity, Johnathan|Christian encourages all to support the LGBTQ+ community. They have made the song available below for as little as $2.00 for all three mixes and streaming globally. jchristianmusic.com

“One of the great post-punk bands was over before it had begun.” – Ivo Watts-Russell, founder, 4AD

‘Rema’ is a meta-analytical approach to studying rare events and sparse data. It is unknown whether 4AD post-punk legends Rema-Rema, who were one of the earliest releases on the famous label with their sole EP, based their name on the scientific term, an acronym for “rare event meta-analysis” – but if not, the synchronicity is certainly appropriate for their history: no footage exists of the band live, and only a handful of photos survive.

Documentary director Marco Porsia has taken the helm of the Rema-Rema analysis: he masterminded the highly-acclaimed documentary Swans – Where Does A Body End?. Now, he sets his sights on a new project: an intimate documentary portrait: What You Could Not Visualise.

Rema-Rema rode the first wave of post-punk between 1978-1980. The band’s innovative and unique sound, shrouded in mystery, are comparable to Joy Division, The Fall, Wire, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Cabaret Voltaire, Fad Gadget, and Throbbing Gristle. Members Mark Cox, Mick Allen, Gary Asquith, Marco Pirroni, and Dorothy ‘Max’ Prior played only 11 gigs around London in 1979, and split up before the release of their one and only record.

After his departure from punk band The Models, Allen asked former schoolmate Asquith to join in a new project, called Rema-Rema. Marco Pirroni, an original member of Siouxsie and the Banshees, was also on board. However, the band dissolved when fellow Marco Pirroni joined Adam and the Ants. Asquith, Allen, and Cox went on to form Mass, which then split up to form Renegade Soundwave (Asquith) and The Wolfgang Press (Allen and Cox). Max later joined Psychic TV.

Their sole four-track EP, 1980’s Wheel In The Roses, featured one side of studio recordings and another of live material. Their songs “Fond Affections” and “Rema-Rema” were later covered by This Mortal Coil and Big Black, respectively.

After more than 40 years, however, Rema-Rema has been resurrected via the release of  the album that they never had the chance to make, thanks to the discovery of old rehearsal tapes and live recordings.

In What You Could Not Visualise, Porsia goes on an archeological exploration to resurrect the band’s unique history to find the driving forces behind their groundbreaking sound. It includes exclusive interviews from 4AD founder Ivo, Stephen Mallinder (Cabaret Voltaire), Steve Albini (Big Black), John Robb (The Membranes), Bruce Pavitt (SubPop), Jim Thirlwell (Foetus), Gudrun Gut, and Bettina Köster (Malaria!), and Rema-Rema themselves.

This film puts Rema-Rema back in their rightful place in the history of post-punk music.

Seems like the world’s terribly dark

Feels like no one hears their voice or hearts

They wait, They stay, They won’t run

Waiting for a wolf to appear, to come

Romantic deathrock outfit Johnathan/Christian, consisting of Stockholm-based Christian Granquist and American Johnathan Mooney, announces a new single. All sales for the track, Talkin’ ‘Bout The Wolf (ft. The Legion of Whom) will go to the Come Back Alive Foundation, a Ukrainian non-governmental organization assisting the Ukrainian national defense.

Talkin’ Bout The Wolf, a Ukrainian saying (Розмова про вовка), roughly translates to “speak of the devil.”  It features The Legion Of Whom, an ensemble of goth/industrial artists:

  • Matt Vowles: Black Angel (guitar)
  • Lee Meadows: The Glass House Museum (bass)
  • Athan Maroulis: NOIR
  • Steven Archer: Ego Likeness/Stoneburner
  • Claus Larsen: Leæther Strip
  • Martin Bowes: Attrition
  • Alla Miroshichenko: Attrition/Alia Synesthesia (cello)
  • Jeff Diehm: The Last Dance
  • Ania Tarnowska: I Ya Toyah

“Since the Donbas Invasion in 2014, Ukraine has been telling the world the wolf is coming, and what have we done to help?” asks Johnathan. “As the battle continues, now is not the time to move on. Ukraine needs everyone’s help now more than ever.”

The single – one with lyrics and one instrumental, is gothic-tinged with an Eastern flavour, a poem lamenting the state of Ukraine in wartime.

Their new album Strip Me is slated for release later this year.

Electro-industrial duo Snowbeasts iare making a difference through the power of music: Raab Codec and Elizabeth Virosa have compiled a collection to benefit Vostok SOS, and The Ukrainian Red Cross.

For Peace. Against War. Who is Not? showcases the talents of a bevy of electronic and experimental musicians from 27 countries, to aid the war-torn people of Ukraine. The title comes from a phrase from an American photographer, writer, filmmaker, philosopher, teacher, and political activist Susan Sontag. The album was released through Component Recordings.

The collection, a behemoth of 196 donated tracks (over 18 hours of music), features Wolfgang Flür (Kraftwerk), Jack Dangers (Meat Beat Manifesto), MAPS, Robin Rimbaud (Scanner), Stephen Mallinder (Cabaret Voltaire). There are also contributions from Schneider TM, Todd Barton, and Dead Voices On Air, as well as scores more.

The idea came about when Putin invaded Ukraine in late February.

“We chatted online about our situation as artists, feeling powerless in the face of this war,” Snowbeats said in a statement. “The only thing that came to mind was to use what we can do best for some greater good. Use music to raise money and support the people of Ukraine.”

Watch the trailer for the compilation below:

When Snowbeasts put out the call. Anyone was welcome, including Russian artists, as long as they had some electronic element to their sound.

“We had no idea that we would receive such HUGE and widespread support. People we had never met, from around the world, several of them Russians or of Russian decent donated tracks to the cause, making this compilation a reality. With the daunting task of selecting tracks from all these submissions, in this short time (the release was scheduled just 5 days after the deadline — we want to raise the money fast!) we worked almost day and night, in shifts…We hope that we made an album full of music, timbres, moods, expression, emotions that will convey feelings and help you do what you do, help you cope while you listen to it and motivate you to do more good things. Help a Ukrainian family, donate money to Ukraine, write to your representatives in Parliament and urge them for meaningful change (like transitioning your country away from fossil fuels, one of Putin’s main leverages in this war) for a more peaceful world.”

Come for the music, donate to the cause, and stay for the incredible array of artists and sounds!

Composing the soundtrack to a dystopian tomorrow, Chicago’s Replicant emerges from the sonic soundscape as a hybrid composite of the analogue, the organic, and the digital. Composed of crooning vocals, sensual synths, and battering bass lines, Replicant draws influence from both the dark and the lustrous sides of our modern dystopia.

Playing for nearly a decade, the darkwave band has also long devoted their energies toward raising funds and awareness for various causes. In the past, they’ve supported The Voting Rights Project, COVID relief fundraisers, and more. They’re sending out the good vibes once again with a live performance shot at Thalia Hall on YouTube.

The band is premiering a live performance filmed at Thalia Hall, and instead of charging a ticket fee, they are accepting donations that will support AFRORACK, an organization that brings modular synthesis workshops to children and young adults in Chicago’s black and brown communities. “While we’ve always been proud of the music we’ve put out, we consider our live show to be Replicant in its purest form,” says the band. “Our lighting rig, including a 4×4 foot neon sign, is almost our sentient 4th member. When we were approached by Thalia Hall earlier this year, we knew this was our opportunity to bring our live show to the masses in a time when touring wasn’t quite possible yet.”

Replicant has played with the likes of HEALTH, The Soft Moon, Youth Code, Lust for Youth, Perturbator, Carpenter Brut, and Cold Showers. They also played Cold Waves Festival at the Metro with Front 242, KMFDM, Severed Heads, Stabbing Westward, Cold Cave, Drab Majesty, Statiqbloom, and many more.

Witness what the band calls a “visual and sonic imprint blurring the lines between seduction and punishment.”

Berlin’s avant-garde cocktail bar, Dream Baby Dream, presents a 23-track compilation record from artists who regularly curate party nights or support the bar. This first installment, Various Artists Part One, is a fundraiser to help the bar make it through the pandemic era.

The homey bar, with its “living room flair,” is a cultural hub for the city, a gathering place for artists and home to misfits in Berlin.

“I ended up at Dream Baby Dream quite by chance, often the best way to find things. It’s a place with a genuine passion for music and a certain aesthetic that doesn’t contradict having an open mind for something different. This is not to be taken for granted these days, where people look for the quick road to “success” without giving much thought about what makes music important in the first place,” says Ason Teva, whose track Malmilian is featured on the record.

The album features a diverse array of performers garnering their support for the venue from all over the globe, including Zachery Allan Starkey/Bernard Sumner, Acid CouplePhase Fatale, Front 313, Miles Brown, Soft Riot, Peter Kirn, and many more.

Front 313’s Alan Oldham weighed in on his contribution, and the importance of Dream Baby Dream to Berlin’s musical landscape: “Before the pandemic, you could play a techno set anywhere in Berlin. But what if you wanted to play a shoegaze/postpunk set? Or an old school, non-mixed industrial set? Not only is Dream Baby Dream a great space filled with all us expats and misfits, it is a needed venue for diversity of musical (and visual) expression, and it’s very important that it survives this current situation. I was glad to help, and would Again.”

Post-Punk.com joins forces with The Brvtalist, CDM, KEYI Magazine and Renee Ruin as media patrons for this project. Partnering labels include Sonic Groove, Instruments of Discipline, BITE, Liber Null, X-IMG, aufnahme + wiedergabe, Braid Records, Antibody, and PI Electronics.
