Another year is over. We made it! Somehow, we’ve tumbled through the vortex of time and landed at the end of 2023. Give yourself a pat on the back; you’ve survived another trip around the sun, and this year, bizarrely elastic in its passage, seemed to stretch on forever yet zipped by in a flash. And, in a plot twist that none of us saw coming, it turned out to be a veritable treasure trove of musical releases.

And I begrudgingly say this, as a former New Yorker and Berliner, but Los Angeles has firmly established itself as a formidable contender in the global post-punk festival scene, effortlessly rivaling the traditional strongholds of Europe. The city, known for its perpetual sunshine (you know, the perfect place for a Goth), now also beams with the sunburnt glow of two pivotal music festivals: Darker Waves and Cruel World. The latter marked the triumphant return of Siouxsie to the U.S., with a performance so electrifying the festival had to be evacuated before she could take the stage. (But come on guys, NYC needs a festival like this, too — LA shouldn’t have all the fun!)

This year was a testament to the enduring spirit and adaptability of post-punk, synthpop, and darkwave, genres that continue to evolve and captivate new generations and even cross over into the mainstream. In this evolving landscape, we’ve seen a surge of artists not just reviving but redefining these sounds. It’s a surreal time these days where the nostalgic echoes of the past meet the innovative visions of the present, resulting in a period that could very well be remembered as a new golden age of post-punk music.

And just as L.A. has seamlessly blended its sunny disposition with the typically gloomy aesthetic of post-punk, the music of 2023 has interwoven the familiar with the avant-garde, presenting a year of releases that are as surprising as they are gratifying.

Nuovo Testamento, a band that has consistently proven its mettle, delivered ‘Love Lines,’ a record where each track shone with the potential of a hit single. Their ability to consistently produce high-caliber music has not gone unnoticed, making them a standout act of the year. Then there was Slowdive’s ‘everything is alive,’ a release that reminded everyone why they are revered icons in the shoegaze realm. Their return wasn’t just a nod to their past glory but a bold statement of their ongoing relevance in today’s music scene.

Mareux’s debut album, ‘Lovers from the Past,’ presented a compelling fusion of generational sounds, effectively bridging the gap between the underground and the contemporary. The album stood out for its creative songcraft and unique aesthetic, marking Mareux as an artist to watch.

The year was also notable for the surprising and remarkable releases from established acts like Zanias, and Belgrado. who released some of their best work to date. and newcomers Lathe of Heaven’s with their full-length debut nostalgic and refreshing nod to Killing Joke and The Blitz. Body of Light’s ‘Bitter Reflection’ was a delightful dive into new-wave pop, showcasing their versatility and creative prowess.

Perhaps most surprising were the contributions from veterans OMD and A Certain Ratio. Their latest works managed to capture the essence of their classic ’80s sound while injecting fresh, contemporary energy, proving that their creative wells are far from dry in 2023.

So, as we close the chapter on this whirlwind of a year, Myself, Andi Harriman, and Frank Deserto have scoured the soundscape, digging through the deluge of tunes to bring you a curated list of this year’s best. So, without further ado, here’s the music that defined our year,

Frank’s List

2023 was a strange year for me, musically. I kinda carved my own path through the year’s releases, actively seeking out guitars as always, eager to hear those six strings resonate the way they do best. In short, I’m still a sucker for a well written, organic song, though there was still quite a bit of room for big electronic beats and deep synthesizer grooves in my heart. In addition, many of my favorite releases of the year are from legacy favorites who released some of the best works of their career, including Slowdive, Fever Ray, Drop Nineteens, The Church, Everything but the Girl, A Certain Ratio, and Blur (perhaps an unpopular choice amongst the post-punk die hards, but for my marbles, their songwriting prowess continues to age like a fine wine, with their latest record mixing sad-bastard ballads with the ghosts of Scary Monsters. Also, don’t sleep on The WAEVE LP for the best Bowie horns this side of Young Americans). Kudos to the old guard for keeping the dream alive (even those who missed the cutoff, he says while still slowly but surely digesting the new OMD and Peter Gabriel albums), but also to the newer artists putting their best foot forward across a myriad of genres. Much love to Belgrado, Lathe of Heaven, Temple of Angels, and my Felte family (Chasms, Public Memory, Odonis Odonis, and Ritual Howls) for pushing boundaries and expanding the atmosphere this year.

The biggest surprise and the greatest reward of the year for me was EXEK, a band that I had never heard before stumbling upon their most recent record by happenstance. While on a pilgrimage to see Cranes reunite in London in October, I stopped by World of Echo, a small but mighty shop specializing in rare post-punk, synth, and outsider music, and heard the bright, clanging melodies of “Glow of Good Will” and “It’s Just a Flesh Wound, Darling” on an endless loop while I was shopping. The shop had just received copies of this new record, and quickly passed the obsession on to me in one foggy afternoon. To my ears, the band channels the best parts of Swell Maps and both Chairs Missing and A Bell is a Cup-era Wire, with a bit of Flying Nun jangle mixed in for good measure.

Happy listening, and see y’all in 2024! <3

The top three albums of 2023 were almost too easy to choose. Nuovo Testamento‘s Love Lines is an instant classic—blurring the lines between Italo disco, freestyle and a hint of Italo house, the band has matured and developed into every dance music fan’s utopian dream. SDH‘s Fake Is Real was similar in its genre-crossing ventures through synthpop, rave, and electro-clashy elements, while Mareux‘s stunningly beautiful LP, Lovers From the Past, put heartbreak overtop a cold, stoic beat.

In an attempt to find that connecting thread between each favorite album and/or track, it became clear that most selections on this list brought something unique that felt eerily familiar or, oppositely, confrontational. Pelada, Fotocopia and Puerta Negra utilized anarchic synthpunk to feud with authoritative women vocals sung in Spanish. Brixx and Augustus Muller reinterpreted the OST into a dreamy, EBM haze (Brixx replete with a saxophone solo). Lathe of Heaven and Blood Bells revved up guitar-based post-punk (positive punk?) amidst the sea of drum machines and synth pad ennui. Be it comfort or discomfort, the range of styles and approaches here are vast.

Most of all, the desire to move and be moved remains as both a DJ and a listener. From synthpunk and post-punk, to EBM and Italo body music, to the downright uncategorizable, each selection adds a luminescence that feels of the moment but—as it is my weakness—isn’t afraid to acknowledge to the past.

LPs

1. Nuovo Testamento – Love Lines

6. Brixx – Erotomania

7. Lathe of Heaven – Bound By Naked Skies

8. Pelada – Ahora Más Que Nunca

9. Fotocopia – Fotocopia

11. Harsh Symmetry – Imitation

12. Blood Bells – Now the Dawn

13. Augustus Muller – Cellulosed Bodies (OST)

14. Zanias – Chrysalis

15. House of Harm – Playground

My favorite stranger stands in my mirrorPuts words in my mouthAll broke and bitter

In a poignant exploration of identity and duality, Depeche Mode’s suspenseful synth diversion My Favourite Stranger (from Memento Mori), co-written by Martin Gore and Richard Butler (Psychedelic Furs), paints a haunting tableau of an individual’s relationship with an elusive other. This “perfect stranger” not only mirrors the protagonist’s actions, but also trespasses on their very essence…moving stealthily, mimicking speech, and eerily echoing footsteps. This doppelgänger embodies the darker, perhaps suppressed facets of the psyche. Through evocative imagery of stolen shadows and echoed conversations, the song explores themes of self-recognition, confrontation, and the unsettling realization that our most intimate stranger might be the reflection we see in the mirror.

Anton Corbijn’s visual interpretation of the song is as enigmatic as the lyrics,  themselves. His monochromatic palette not only accentuates the surreal, dreamlike quality of the narrative but also magnifies the tension inherent in its suspense. The solitary figure, cloaked in ambiguity with a wide-brimmed hat, becomes both the protagonist and the enigma, a symbol of the elusive “perfect stranger” that the song contemplates. As the character traverses through varied terrains—from the mystic woods to an antiquated European shop—it’s the viewer who is ensnared in a game of chase, always on the periphery, always observing but never truly connecting. Corbijn’s choice to reveal mere flashes of the androgynous face ensures that the figure remains perennially out of grasp, much like the shadowy stranger in the song. While the climax promises a revelation, Corbijn smartly nudges viewers to embark on their own introspective journey to uncover the enigma.

Watch below:

In “Memento Mori,” Depeche Mode crafts an evocative narrative, melding both the looming existential weight of the pandemic and the haunting absence of their bandmate, Andy “Fletch” Fletcher. The album stands as a stark reminder of life’s transience and the inescapable approach of mortality. James Ford and Marta Salogni’s touch in the production imbues each track with a polished gravitas, creating an auditory experience that captures both personal loss and global upheaval.

Despite the dark title and prevailing themes of death, the album also becomes a celebration of life and the deep connections that endure. In embracing their sorrow, Depeche Mode delivers an album that is a testament to resilience, the evanescence of life, and the indelible marks we leave behind.

My Favourite Stranger is on Memento Mori, out now. Order the album here.

In the latest installment of CBS Sunday Morning, Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan and Martin Gore unflinchingly opened up about their latest album, Memento Mori, and the lingering ache of losing bandmate Andy “Fletch” Fletcher.

This was no run-of-the-mill interview – the segment was a rare window into the band’s complicated soul from their own perspective. The interview also touched upon what is next for them, and a glimpse into what makes them tick. his Their frank conversation was a sobering reminder of how Depeche Mode’s brooding electronic meditations and existential lyricism have formed a musical language transcending generational divides.

Over the last four decades, Gahan and Gore have evolved into two wise elder statesmen of the alternative music scene who have weathered many storms, victories, and losses.

The 7½-minute conversation, complemented by a teasing outtake, is available below for those yearning to dig deeper into the minds of Gahan and Gore as they prepare to unleash their second North American act on September 21, starting with Mexico City. They will be joined by recently announced supporting acts Kelly Lee Owens, DIIV, and Young Fathers.

The band also reveals the audacious lengths they explore to unearth unconventional sounds in the web-only exclusive with correspondent Luke Burbank.

Bathed in the luminescence of cinematic pop, Kid Moxie reigns unrivaled. A kismet encounter with a humble can of Moxie Cola stoked the fires of her musical aspiration, sparking the birth of her sonic alter-ego—Kid Moxie. “Cinematic pop is my genre of choice,” she confesses, and it’s impossible to ignore the reel of vibrant cinematic nuances that play out in her melodically spellbinding tapestries.

Now she proudly announces a dreamy remix for Depeche Mode’s Wagging Tongue, off their latest album Memento Mori. In this song, Dave Gahan’s voice is steeped in the raw essence of grief as he tackles the heartbreaking subject of beholding “another angel fall.” His melancholic tones carry the narrative of overcoming character assassinations—whether they’re targeted personal onslaughts against a contentious figure, the stifling vortex of echo chambers, or possibly allegorical references to political stagnancy on pressing matters like gun control or the perils encircling the LGBTQ+ community. Adding Kid Moxie’s ethereal voice to the track brings a great deal of poignancy to the song.

“I was pretty ecstatic when Depeche Mode reached out to me to produce and sing on a remix for “Wagging Tongue,” she says. “I was asked to make it “my own” and go for that cinematic pop vibe which happens to be my sound. Now, as confident as I feel about my own sound, I got a bit nervous because this is my favourite band, and I really wanted them to like it. When I got the stems, I solo-ed Dave’s voice and truly had a close-to-ethereal experience! I was thinking of myself as a kid in Greece, adoring them, and now “here they were,” their voices on my laptop. I worked on it for about a month, played around with the sounds and our voices, and deeply enjoyed diving in. My manager, Michael Pagnotta, is a long-time friend of the band and was a good sounding board for me during the creative process. I savoured taking my time with it as it felt like the kind of song that kept growing, evolving, and unfolding. A truly multi-layered and deeply emotional track. I was envisioning deserted city rooftops, neon lights, and black angel wings flying over the skyline.”

Listen to the new version of “Wagging Tongue” below:

Originally from the Greek islands, Kid Moxie now calls the City of Angels her home. Under her true identity—Elena Charbila, she has carved her niche in the music landscape through monumental collaborations. Her sonic partnerships span from the genre-blending Gaslamp Killer to the iconic maestro Angelo Badalamenti, whom she collaborated with on a symphonic rendition of “Mysteries of Love,” an unforgettable piece from David Lynch’s cult classic, Blue Velvet. Kid Moxie’s musical virtuosity extends beyond collaborations; she has marked her aural signature by composing for the recently rebranded Orion/MGM Pictures logo, and delivering a score for Cannes laureate Vassilis Kekatos’ newest television venture, Milky Way.

But it’s not just her impressive resume that’s turning heads. Kid Moxie’s own personal albums are an aural delight, with tracks that have received significant international airplay and have been featured in indie films, hit TV shows, and international brand campaigns. She’s even contributed several tracks to the wildly popular video game sensation Cyberpunk 2077.

Doom Pop Outfit SOM confess their love of Depeche Mode with their respectful tribute to the timeless appeal of the band’s song catalog with the debut of their music video for “Personal Jesus.” This somber rendition of the iconic Depeche Mode track exhibits a fresh take on the classic, changing the tone into something just as seductive yet laced with an undying melancholy new to this reinterpretation.

This version of “Personal Jesus” features on SOM’s forthcoming EP, “Faith,” which is a loving anthology of Depeche Mode covers. The inspiration for the video concept harks back to 1989 when Depeche Mode’s label intriguingly placed cryptic personal ads in UK newspapers before the release of the original single.

“When Samia and I were working on the concept, I was inspired to learn how Depeche Mode’s label took out mysterious personal ads in the UK newspapers before the single came out in 1989 that just said ‘Your own personal Jesus,’ with a number that people could call and hear the song playing on the other end of the line,” explains SOM’s Mike Repasch-Nieves. “So we wanted to do a version of that but take it further, by posting an anonymous call for people to share their prayers and confessions with us. These prayers and confessions along with intimate portraits (filmed over several weeks across multiple cities) formed the basis of the video.”

On the cover’s gorgeous music video, director Samia Zaidi adds, “The moment I heard the song, a series of very human portraits started playing in my head. There was something about the idea of seeing this smorgasbord of humanity that seemed really fitting for the heavy way the song unfolded. We were mindful of the vulnerability we were asking for and distributed the confessions in different ways. Some were direct accompaniments, others were vaguely placed in order to maintain the anonymity of our subjects and submissions.”

Watch the video for “Personal Jesus” below:

SOM’s vocalist and songwriter, Will Benoit, reflects on the band’s experience of engaging with Depeche Mode’s music and their fans: “Since releasing our version of ‘Enjoy The Silence’ last month, it’s become really clear that Depeche Mode means a lot to so many people that you might not think would love them. Depeche Mode aren’t just some popular band from another era; their catalog transcends era and genre, and their music really resonates. Fans have been sharing other Depeche Mode covers they like with us, talking with us about their favorite songs, and asking which other songs we covered. There’s a curiosity and excitement around this collection of music, and the experience of this EP finding its place in the dark magical world of Depeche Mode has been really heartening.”

SOM’s “Faith” EP, which includes “Personal Jesus” and other Depeche Mode covers, is due to be released on May 26, 2023.

Pre-Save the EP here. It is also available as a limited-edition cassette that can be ordered here.

“Can it not be written?”

“It needs to be spoken.”

“Wagging Tongue” from Depeche Mode’s Memento Mori is an exquisite dirge about the perils of the rumour mill. the song is layered with luminescent New Wave synths, reverberating with the nostalgia of the band’s foundational style, brimming with ethereal ambiance. It’s a mesmerising amalgamation of sombre lyricism and sonic shimmer, underscored with profound emotional depth.

In this track, Dave Gahan’s vocals are imbued with sorrow as he broaches the poignant theme of witnessing “another angel die.” His sombre tonality delivers the lyrics about surmounting smear campaigns – be they literal personal vendettas against someone controversial, the frustrations of the echo chamber, or even a symbolic reference to political inertia over dire issues like firearm safety or the dangers faced by the queer community.

The Sacred Egg/Anton Corbijn-directed video for “Wagging Tongue,” however, examines the communication breakdown of the common man through social media vitriol. It is an absolute masterpiece of performance art. The monochromatic narrative shows a couple in a studio, executed only through written words on a blackboard, and they find themselves walking to a ritual mimicking river baptism. Those standing in line waiting their turn are holding devices, never speaking to each other, only communicating through text.

Half drowning, each pairing furiously executes their argument through the veil of murky river water, their words becoming bullets fired through air bubbles, yet we know they are never truly heard…or heeded. And the cycle continues, as they create more flower centrepieces…presumably for a coffin.

With this poignant clip, the medium of music video still has the power to deeply move us emotionally with a sharp narrative. References to Ingmar Bergman, as with “Ghosts Again”, appear in “Wagging Tongue” as well.

The Memento Mori album marks a new chapter for Depeche Mode’s peerless, evolving legacy. Memento Mori originated early in the pandemic during the chaos of uncertainty and global panic; now the grim title also reflects the sombre reality of a Fletch-less future for the band. The album was produced by James Ford, and Marta Salogni.

Dave Gahan noted that although work on ‘Memento Mori’ started before Fletcher’s death, Fletch did not record any material on the album. “He never got to hear any of it,” the singer told NME, “which is really sad to me because there are songs on this record where I know he’d be like, ‘This is the best thing we’ve had in years.’ I can hear his voice,” he said. “I can also hear him saying, ‘Does every song have to be about death?!’”

“After Fletch’s passing, we decided to continue as we’re sure this is what he would have wanted,” says Martin Gore, “and that has really given the project an extra level of meaning.”

Memento Mori is out now on double vinyl, CD, cassette, and streaming. The band is currently on their Memento Mori tour in support of the group’s 15th studio album, which began on 23 March 2023. This is the first concert tour to not feature keyboardist Andy Fletcher.

Depeche Mode descended onto the Sacramento stage on Thursday night, commencing the first show of their colossal Memento Mori tour. The band formed in Basildon four decades ago delivered a 23-song odyssey that unveiled five tracks from their new album, resurrected a song dormant for over a decade, and paid homage to their fallen comrade, Andy Fletcher.

Dave Gahan and Martin Gore set the mood of the evening with both of Memento Mori’s opening tracks, “My Cosmos Is Mine” and “Wagging Tongue,” before diving into a maelstrom of ’90s gems, including “It’s No Good,” “Walking in My Shoes,” “Sister of Night,” and “In Your Room.” The duo didn’t venture too deep into their early ’80s roots, with only a few pre-Black Celebration anthems such as “Just Can’t Get Enough” and “Everything Counts” making the cut.

Gore’s traditional two-song serenade featured a revival of “A Question of Lust,” untouched since 2017 and last played by the full band in 2013, as well as the Memento Mori debut of  “Soul With Me.” During the encore, Gahan and Gore joined forces for a haunting rendition of Violator’s “Waiting for the Night,” a track unheard live since 2009.

In a poignant tribute to their lost brother Fletcher, who succumbed to an aortic dissection last year, the surviving duo performed “World in My Eyes,” one of his favorite Depeche Mode songs. Emotive images of Fletcher loomed on the screen behind them, with Gahan honoring him as “our friend, Andrew Fletcher” at the song’s close.

Depeche Mode has emerged from the shadows with a haunting new dystopian dirge, “My Cosmos Is Mine,” a glimpse into their upcoming album, Memento Mori. Reminiscent of their Songs of Faith and Devotion and Ultra eras, this plodding track is dripping with emotion and angst, a sign of the times with Gahan’s plea for justice and universal peace.

Dave Gahan’s vocals emerge, exuding a ghostly reverb, like the echo of a voice from beyond the grave, as the track’s foundation is laid with a series of ominous, distant drums that creep in slowly. Reverberating like the chimes of a clock tower, he croons a cautionary tale to refrain from tampering with his world, thoughts, or sense of time, reminding them that his cosmos is his and his alone.

Despite the initial impression that the track is a personal lament, it quickly transforms into a powerful protest anthem against the oppressive forces in the world. Gahan passionately urges to end both war and fear before emphatically stating that there should be no more senseless deaths or final breaths.

With “My Cosmos Is Mine,” Depeche Mode showcases a darker, more industrial sound than their signature synth-pop. The track’s foreboding aesthetic seeps into the listener’s consciousness like a midnight fog, leaving a lasting impression. Prepare yourself for another captivating album from Depeche Mode, and listen to the song below.

Reach out and touch faith! In anticipation of Depeche Mode’s upcoming mammoth 75-date tour for their new album Memento Mori, the synthpop pioneers graced the stage of the famed Ed Sullivan Theatre in a Thursday appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. They performed the lead single, “Ghosts Again,” as well as a web-only performance of the Violator classic, “Personal Jesus.”

Now a duo with supporting musicians, Colbert proudly introduced the band, as Dave Gahan and Martin Gore delivered winners to sinners in sharp suits. Gahan’s emotive performance of Ghosts Again was full of heart, and you could see the band earned a well-deserved standing ovation from the studio audience.  Personal Jesus started with a slowed-down intro until launching into the familiar, stomping tempo.

It’s nice to see Depeche Mode still on top of their game, and a nice glimpse of what to expect on the upcoming tour.

Watch below:

The Memento Mori album marks a new chapter for Depeche Mode’s peerless, evolving legacy. Memento Mori originated early in the pandemic during the chaos of uncertainty and global panic; now the grim title also reflects the sombre reality of a Fletch-less future for the band. The album was produced by James Ford, and Marta Salogni.

Memento Mori will be released on March 24 on double vinyl, CD, cassette, and digital. Check out the full tracklist below.

You can pre-order the album here.
