In the age of Quarantine virtual events have become the norm, with various live streams for concerts and club events being organized worldwide. Berlin, a city known for its club culture, has become silent on most weekends, with the city’s premier nightclub Berghain being utilized as an art gallery when lockdown restrictions are not completely in full effect.

Originally scheduled for the summer, Krake Festival, a state-funded multi-venue city-wide electronic music event that was set to expand to neighboring Leipzig, had its normal interaction canceled. The event suddenly had to be shifted to December, merging the living and bedroom after-hours club vibe with streaming sets, interviews, and creative cultural vignettes for its 10th-anniversary celebration.

Krake Festival is one of Berlin’s most important cultural events for the underground, and the success of 2020’s World Wide Web edition was a much-needed respite to keep morale going for those working in the German capital’s nightlife industry, and post-punk adjacent dark techno club culture across the globe.

Across three days spanning from December 11th to the 13th, Krake Festival streamed an assorted curation of programming crossing genre boundaries, time zones, and media.

The first day featured four shows, amongst them was an augmented fantasy live performance, a very unusual combination of a cooking show and a back to back to back DJ set.

The crowning achievement of the festival is the quality production of KRAKE TV, an online music television program including artist features (interviews with Arad and Purita D), music videos, comedy, a charity raffle, and a techno workout by Wes Baggaley.

Watch Krake TV Day One below:

Day 2 translates a multi-room festival situation into modern times with almost 10 streams happening at the same time. Showcasing different crews from out of Berlin and the rest of the world, it featured FOLD London, The Crave from The Hague, Mechatronica, Ismus, Universe of Tang, and more. The content was streamed all night long on the Krake website, where visitors could switch between the streams just like a club-goer would check out different floors and musical & audiovisual concepts at Krake’s real-life festival.

Watch Krake TV Day 2 below:

Day 3 was all about decompression, with an ambient sleep concert happening all night long. The focus was on relaxing and spacious music a person could enjoy alone or with friends chilling and dreaming away on their own couch or bed. Possibly the most appropriate format for electronic music in these tempestuous times.

Watch Krake TV Day 3 Below:

Krake TV was just one of many wonderfully curated features of Krake Festival 2020, ultimately the festival’s true stars are the team of international DJ’s that perform their sets every year. Watch DJ Stingray, Helena Hauff, and more below:

Not many festivals and club events have been able to adapt to the constraints of the Corona Virus pandemic, but Krake has indeed cracked the code for online festival events.

Over 3 days in December Krake Festival is celebrating 10 years of its existence with a very special edition. The festival organisers broke their backs to come up with something special in these crazy times and we think they succeeded. The festival covers three days of music, live a/v shows, the very first of Krake TV (their own music TV format), a Call-In Talk Show, and an interactive multi-stream rave. A total of 10 streams happening at the same time, brought to you by some of the coolest crews from across the globe.

Krake TV: To expand the streaming format for festivals, they have developed Krake TV, a music TV format with different shows presenting music videos, artist features, comedy in cooperation with backstage – Das DJ Magazin, a brand new techno workout as well as the traditional Krake raffle. Get ready for one hour of Krake TV on all three days!

Person Man Woman Camera TV show: Our Call-In Talk Show with Dieter Polen and DJ Elliver is discussing the most important and ridiculous issues of our times with their audience.

V.A. Music Compilation: To round it off, Krake are releasing music from some of the key artists that have been playing for them during the past 10 years. It would have been too much to ask all of them, but Krake did ask some if they wanted to contribute to a jubilee compilation and now they are happy and proud to be able to present a V.A. compilation with over 80 tracks! The compilation is released digitally only and sold for a very, very low price. All will automatically take part in the charity raffle/tombola.

Charity raffle/tombola: The annual label fair won’t happen for obvious reasons – but the raffle takes place nonetheless! Numerous labels have given Krake huge packages – partly their whole catalogue – and brands such as Irie Daily, Native Instruments, Ableton and Elektron have contributed to an amazing selection of prizes. All profit of ticket sales will be donated to the inclusive project Ick Mach Welle and Seawatch.

Festival Highlights:

ARAD’S AUGMENTED FANTASY

The Arad Augmented Fantasy is a virtual playground for the development of performance characters that interact with, inspire, and are inspired by the Artist’s musical output. These shape-shifting characters and personas are an attempt to visualise the intentions and feelings of individual tracks. The Arad Augmented Fantasy experience is the beginning of a project that will live in many virtual and real environments. Whether it’s as an AV show in a club, streaming performance on line, or else though podcasts, Open World games, or social media this projects aim is to create a feedback loop where the music and lyrical content, mutates into a multitude of visual personas and these intern go on to inspire and create more sonic genes themselves.

DEVIN MOHR & JOCHEN KRONIER PRESENT: XENOPROBE (PREMIERE)

Devin Mohr and Jochen Kronier are multi-media artists living in Berlin. They share a similar aesthetic and musical sensibility for their other-worldly projects. Both are accomplished customers. Jochen has a special talent for music production and arrangement while Devin is a lyricist/songwriter. Jochen has spent much of his career making pop stars look amazing with his dynamic costume and shoe design. Devin has spent a big part of his career producing designs for entertainment, lighting design and set design. The piece entitled ‘Xenoprobe‘ is an electronic musical and was made exclusively for Krake music festival. It follows two aliens who observe the human condition through music, humor, and spectacle. Sometimes ambient and sometimes club-trance, the piece explores absurdity and beauty with a lighthearted approach. (And maybe a few barbs for the more conservative viewer!)

DJ STINGRAY

Permit yourself to zoom out of your singular reality enough such that all activity, all that is knowingly accumulated and all that is unnervingly accepted on this earth, is a spectrum of information. This includes the thermodynamics of our own biological structure. Now consider that music is a segment of this spectrum, and DJ Stingray’s nexus of electro and techno a further specialised section forged in bypassing normalised circuits to confront the future, to articulate abstract dynamics.

HELENA HAUFF

For a top-flight DJ and producer, Helena Hauff is remarkably relatable. Despite moving from the grotty confines of Hamburg’s Golden Pudel to big festival stages in the space of a few years, the German artist seems immune to the charms of fame. She’s pushing a particularly wild strain of music in uncompromising fashion, placing gnashing electro by acidic techno and chugging EBM. As her star has risen, she’s become a beacon of authenticity, making her one of the best-loved DJs to emerge in recent memory.

UNDERGROUND KITCHISTANCE

Underground Kitchistance is about food and music. Both tasting and hearing are physical sensations, culturally developed, and formed into cuisine and music. The chef and the DJ play a similar role: they play and experiment, they teach and educate, they control and create. Underground Kitchistance consists of Alienata, Max Durante, and DJ Flush, three DJs who have been musical and real-life friends for a long time, sharing their passion for music as well as for cooking. During one hour they will play a b2b2b and cook a full dinner with several courses. One try only, no practice was allowed – A challenge, a feast, a rave for your ears and your mouth. Techno Food and Revolution.

TRANSFORMA PRES. “POKALE” WITH A SOUNDTRACK BY SHED (LIVE A/V)

Transforma produce audiovisual performances, installations, projections for music, video clips, and have worked extensively with theatre and dance. Creating images and atmospheres which establish a connection between the material properties of their subject, abstract storytelling, and a hands-on approach to production, they have developed their own language within the live visual experience. They have long-standing collaborations with numerous artists, directors, and musicians and have performed live and exhibited at many major festivals and venues around the world. Transforma was formed in 2001 in Berlin by Luke Bennett, Baris Hasselbach, and Simon Krahl.

Tonight in Berlin Krake Festival begins it’s foray into 36 hours of non-stop music spanning 3 floors at Griessmuehle. During this massive event, which marks day IV and V of the annual festival, we are set to see industrial techno pioneer JK Flesh, along with Felix K, Pessimist,  and Presha from Samurai Music / Horo, and a showcase from post-punk & EBM label Fleisch, featuring Spoiled Drama and Halv Drøm.

“It is very important to us to support Berlin’s underground scene at Krake Festival.  We’ve been following Fleisch for a while and are looking forward to them showcase their sound at the festival!!” -Krake Festival

Ahead of Halv Drøm’s (aka Saxon Jorgensen) appearance as part of the Fleisch showcase, we spoke to him about Krake, and his methodology for creating sound, and how he was enlisted to play the festival this year:

I went to Krake festival a few years ago as a guest and liked some of the artists and this year they requested me for the Fleisch showcase which I’m really looking forward to!

What exactly is Fleisch?

Fleisch is a Party / Record label focussing on contemporary EBM,Techno, Acid, breaks and Electro. Some of my favourite times dancing were in the Urban Spree basement at a Fleisch party! I had the pleasure to play these parties with Lghtwght, Zanias, Primary, Phase Fatale, Agency and so many more but we were the core djs at the start! I and August started doing these back to back sets which we were doing a lot over these past years in different scenes.

Our next party is on the 7th September with Kontravoid from Canada and Lucy Cliché from Australia!

Who are you excited to see/perform with at Krake?

Reka because she’s an incredible Dj and JK Flesh because I’m feeling a lot of his tracks!

What is your musical background?

I was the guitarist for Ascetic: with August Skipper (Operant) and Andrew Jigalin (Owner of Dream Baby Dream). I had made music before but really that band and working with those guys was my main thing and informed my musical universe!

What is your methodology for exploring sound and creating music? Can you give a specific example of a moment in your creative process?

I find field recordings a good way to start as there’s so much texture and atmosphere to inspire an unusual palette. I also sample my guitar through many different effects pedals and perform the parameters. I still use a sample pack I made recording a loading dock at the back of a super market 6 years ago! I walked around hitting everything in that space to create most of the big percussive hits in my tracks. Im refining that approach so far!

Is there a practice in alchemic spirituality in the creation of music? Maybe transmuting things into tangible existence that are perhaps nebulous in the void?

Sound can be healing so whether its simply the resonant frequency effecting your cells or the sound that tells a story that brings you to a better awareness it’s definitely a mysterious tool that we can utilise. There’s certain frequencies that alter your brain waves and or restrict parts of your brain and focus on other areas that may help you have visions. But for me alchemy is about transitional stages to become the best version of your self!

What can we expect from your set at Krake?

I’m always on the look out for special tracks that have that impact on me. That get me in the moment and out of my head. Frenetic, romantic, absurd, dark and primal is usually what I’m going for in my sets!

Halv Drøm’s set begins at 2:30am. For more information on the festival, go here.

Release the Kraken!

KRAKE FESTIVAL 2017 is at hand! The annual Berlin based festival for challenging and cutting edge electronic music returns on July 24th for a week’s worth of events.

The 8th edition of the festival is spreading it’s tentacles all over Berlin—commencing on Monday at Silent Green—a beautiful former crematorium in the north of Berlin with a performance from These Hidden Hands.

Wednesday see’s Krake Festival teaming up with Prague’s Lunchmeat Festival for a well curated lineup at Griessmuehle.

Friday at Urban Spree will see the legendary Krake Label Boutique there again where labels such as Instruments of Discipline, Aufnahme + Wiedergabe, Mannequin, Jealous God, and more!

Our personal editorial pick as being the highlight of the festival is showcased this night of the festival—as later on at Urban Spree in the gallery space there will be performances by Japanese synth act Group A

and Detroit synthpunk duo Nicola Kuperus and Adam Lee Miller’s acclaimed project Adult.

With DJ sets by Marc AshNewclear Waves (aka Alessandro Adriani owner of Mannequin Records), Luna Violenta (Instruments of Discipline), and more!

From Saturday to Monday morning the festival will return to Griessmuehle for 36 hours of non stop music. We recommend checking in on Ancient Methods, and a live set from  Trepaneringsritualen.
