The sky like blood
Oh, steel to flesh
The earth so black
Oh, flesh and steel

Get ready, New York: the maiden launch of Flesh & Steel (a multi-date/multi-venue symposium of coldwave, darkwave, industrial, and EBM) is descending upon Gotham in early December.

With consecutive nights at Saint Vitus, Knockdown Center, the Meadows, and Good Room, FLESH & STEEL is poised to be the electronic/post-punk destination for the Eastern Seaboard—and beyond.

The first night finds electronic artists RIKI and ORTROTASCE headlining the Saint Vitus stage with support from the propulsive CES CADAVERES and UN HOMBRE SOLO, as well as a DJ set from David Castillo in CONFINES mode.

The next night, the widely acclaimed BOY HARSHER will conjure their dark trippiness all over Knockdown Center, alongside Belgian EBM legends A SPLIT-SECOND, propulsive dance engine SOFT CRASH, and Belgian post-punk/EBM pioneers PARADE GROUND, with DJ sets from Harriman and KONTRAVOID.

Flesh & Steel’s final night culminates with two presentations manifesting as the best living electronic mixtape you’ve heard in a while. An early program at The Meadows featuring bona fide Canadian goth-pop legends PSYCHE, LA’s SACRED SKIN, the robotic and romantic RARE DM, and strident post-punks LATHE OF HEAVEN. Later that evening, Good Room will host a night of DJ sets of mutant disco and techno from BOY HARSHER’s GUS MULLER, PHASE FATALE, Berlin-based genre-defier PABLO BOZZI, and an undercard of futurists including SHARLESE, MAYLAND, R. GAMBLE, and BECKA DIAMOND.

Flesh & Steel is the collective brainchild of Restless Presents, a cabal of LA-based promoters, St Vitus owner David Castillo, and NYC DJ/journalist/Andi Harriman of the popular NYC darkwave event/record label SYNTHICIDE.

Flesh & Steel celebrates humanity, machinery, and new ways of thinking about all things electronic and invigorating. Castillo, Harriman, and Restless Nites’ Brian Tarney have impeccable reputations for developing exciting events while simultaneously creating community. When so many music festivals seem completely moribund, being short on vision and long on favors owed and corporate logos on backdrops, Flesh & Steel aims to create and lift culture coming from the heart—not the wallet.

“The name ‘Flesh & Steel’ comes from the song by SPK from their 1985 album Machine Age Voodoo,” says Harriman, acknowledging the contribution of the respected British new-beat progenitors to the electronic music continuum. “The mid-’80s iteration of SPK with Machine Age Voodoo was a daring one—it mixed pop elements with industrial ones, blending their early anarchic noise and sampling with a song-based sensibility. So pulling the name from the sexy track, ‘Flesh And Steel,’ on that album seemed to fit well, as did the inspiration for the flyer imagery that reflects the band’s aesthetic at that time… brutal but intimate.”

“There is a bounty of that rare synergy of community and culture between Restless Presents, Saint Vitus, and SYNTHICIDE, whose visions align on opposite coasts,” notes Restless Presents’ Tarney.

Flesh & Steel promises to be one of the best events of the year! Don’t miss it!

Boy Harsher, A Split-Second, Psyche, and more give this community an international platform
for three nights across three of Brooklyn’s finest venues SAINT VITUS, KNOCKDOWN CENTER, GOOD ROOM, and THE MEADOWS

Berlin’s avant-garde cocktail bar, Dream Baby Dream, presents a 23-track compilation record from artists who regularly curate party nights or support the bar. This first installment, Various Artists Part One, is a fundraiser to help the bar make it through the pandemic era.

The homey bar, with its “living room flair,” is a cultural hub for the city, a gathering place for artists and home to misfits in Berlin.

“I ended up at Dream Baby Dream quite by chance, often the best way to find things. It’s a place with a genuine passion for music and a certain aesthetic that doesn’t contradict having an open mind for something different. This is not to be taken for granted these days, where people look for the quick road to “success” without giving much thought about what makes music important in the first place,” says Ason Teva, whose track Malmilian is featured on the record.

The album features a diverse array of performers garnering their support for the venue from all over the globe, including Zachery Allan Starkey/Bernard Sumner, Acid CouplePhase Fatale, Front 313, Miles Brown, Soft Riot, Peter Kirn, and many more.

Front 313’s Alan Oldham weighed in on his contribution, and the importance of Dream Baby Dream to Berlin’s musical landscape: “Before the pandemic, you could play a techno set anywhere in Berlin. But what if you wanted to play a shoegaze/postpunk set? Or an old school, non-mixed industrial set? Not only is Dream Baby Dream a great space filled with all us expats and misfits, it is a needed venue for diversity of musical (and visual) expression, and it’s very important that it survives this current situation. I was glad to help, and would Again.”

Post-Punk.com joins forces with The Brvtalist, CDM, KEYI Magazine and Renee Ruin as media patrons for this project. Partnering labels include Sonic Groove, Instruments of Discipline, BITE, Liber Null, X-IMG, aufnahme + wiedergabe, Braid Records, Antibody, and PI Electronics.

Help preserve an important part of Berlin: the digital album is available for purchase and streaming here.

Berlin Based Post-Punk scene veteran and electronic music producer Unhuman presents his most dancefloor-sculpted release yet for BITE—the label run by Dark Techno Auteur Phase Fatale and Florian Engerling.

The new EP Nylon Speech is a genre-bending, complex, and confrontational collection of sounds calibrated for dark club dance collectivism that unified with hedonistic bass beats.

Unhuman, is the nom de guerre of Manos Simotas, an artist whose sonic palette is constantly diving headlong into new territory, evolving from his roots in post-punk to experimental and noise through electro-mutant-infused techno.

Now a global presence, utilizing Berlin as a home base, where he is the regular mainstay of major clubs locally, such as his own event, Liber Null Berlin,  Simotas now even holds a residency at Constant Value in Seoul, South Korea, and is a key figure in between the Asian and European underground electronic music scenes.

From Simotas’ lastest Nylon Speech listen to “Seuche”—a track featuring Berlin queer and Batcave scene mainstay Petra Flurr on vocals, altogether augmenting the past, present, and future of Unhuman music.

Tracklisting 12” / Digital:
Written and produced by Manos Simotas

  • A1. Rapid Body Corruption
  • A2. Abdominal Pain
  • B1. Nylon Speech
  • B2. Seuche ft. Petra Flurr

Historically—Berlin’s thriving Techno scene evolved from Post-Punk origins, and such filial union between scenes could not be more evident in producer Tommy Four Seven’s Numerology:

“A new event concept which explores experimentations and diversity in electronic music.”

In the main room Surgeon will be performing live, along with Tommy Four Seven himself, Headless Horseman, who just had a fantastic new release on 47 [47009]:

Room 2 in particular will be of interest to Post-Punk fans, as Alessandro Adriani of Mannequin Records will be djing, as well as a different kind of set from Hayden Payne’s (Phase Fatale) other alter ego Sekunde, along with LGHTWGHT from the Fleisch collective.

Check out this mix from She Made Monster (who is also spinning in room 2) via The Brvtalist.

Located in the vaults of an old coin factory in central Berlin, a labyrinth of dark corridors, bare brick and concrete chambers will host three rooms, each equipped with a tailored Funktion-One system.

Around that time—you may have heard that Conan O’Brien was outside filming comedy bit during his stop in Berlin, but no one cared as the dancefloor was packed while Phase Fatale mixed in EBM and Post-Punk seemlessly into four on the floor techno beats—closing his set with Anne Clark’s Sleeper in Metropolis!

Listen to Phase Fatale’s Under Marble, a pounding and percussive EBM/Techno bio-mechanical banger—heavy on the bassynth, highhat, kinetic drumbeats, and a synth chorus only appropriate for church on Sunday.
