Berlin’s avant-garde cocktail bar, Dream Baby Dream, presents a 23-track compilation record from artists who regularly curate party nights or support the bar. This first installment, Various Artists Part One, is a fundraiser to help the bar make it through the pandemic era.

The homey bar, with its “living room flair,” is a cultural hub for the city, a gathering place for artists and home to misfits in Berlin.

“I ended up at Dream Baby Dream quite by chance, often the best way to find things. It’s a place with a genuine passion for music and a certain aesthetic that doesn’t contradict having an open mind for something different. This is not to be taken for granted these days, where people look for the quick road to “success” without giving much thought about what makes music important in the first place,” says Ason Teva, whose track Malmilian is featured on the record.

The album features a diverse array of performers garnering their support for the venue from all over the globe, including Zachery Allan Starkey/Bernard Sumner, Acid CouplePhase Fatale, Front 313, Miles Brown, Soft Riot, Peter Kirn, and many more.

Front 313’s Alan Oldham weighed in on his contribution, and the importance of Dream Baby Dream to Berlin’s musical landscape: “Before the pandemic, you could play a techno set anywhere in Berlin. But what if you wanted to play a shoegaze/postpunk set? Or an old school, non-mixed industrial set? Not only is Dream Baby Dream a great space filled with all us expats and misfits, it is a needed venue for diversity of musical (and visual) expression, and it’s very important that it survives this current situation. I was glad to help, and would Again.”

Post-Punk.com joins forces with The Brvtalist, CDM, KEYI Magazine and Renee Ruin as media patrons for this project. Partnering labels include Sonic Groove, Instruments of Discipline, BITE, Liber Null, X-IMG, aufnahme + wiedergabe, Braid Records, Antibody, and PI Electronics.

Help preserve an important part of Berlin: the digital album is available for purchase and streaming here.

The Trevor Project, founded in 1998, is the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer & questioning (LGBTQ) young people under 25. In support of this worthy cause, over twenty contributors to Darkness Calling’s newest compilation album, entitled YOU ARE NOT ALONE, have joined forces.

Artists include 5RVLN5, (pronounced ‘Surveillance’), Twin Replica, The Sea At Midnight, Corvax, and more. The album offers a smattering of dark indie, industrial, and gothic rock.

Released on Halloween 2020, listeners can donate as little as $1.00. Those who download the compilation also be able to access the PDF “CD booklet” which contains relevant information about The Trevor Project and the LGBTQ artists featured on the release. This is a worthy cause with a lot of heart and soul poured into it.

100% of donations collected from this compilation (after Bandcamp/PayPal fees) are being donated directly to The Trevor Project, and these donations are shared on Darkness Calling’s Instagram page’s Story Highlight entitled “GIVE.” Listeners can track the growing donations at instagram.com/darknesscallingdotnet

The artists, track listing, and all other relevant details can be found at thereishope.bandcamp.com, as well as their promotional trailer below:

Aleksandr Lukashenko, aka “Europe’s last dictator,” is waging a war against the citizens of Belarus, beating and torturing peaceful protestors fighting for their right to honest, transparent elections. After Lukashenko’s forces arrested thousands, many remain missing Despite this tyrannical act, the largest act of solidarity in Belarusian history is being conducted without coordination, leadership, or even an internet connection on the first days after the country’s elections.

The artists featured on this international compilation aim to demonstrate solidarity with these courageous Belarusians and to raise funds for the Belarus Solidarity Foundation. This organization directly benefits victims of repression and injustice from Lukashenko’s forces.

For Belarus
According to the site:
The initiative was created by the founders of BY _ help campaigns (Andrey Strizhak, Alexey Lyavonchik), BYCOVID19 (Andrey Strizhak), the Belarusian diaspora and business circles (Yaroslav Likhachevsky, Mikita Mikado). The Fund accepts applications from those in need and distributes this assistance based on the principles of openness and transparency, accountability for victims and respect for citizens’ rights and freedoms. The Foundation is legally undergoing the procedure for registration in The Hague, Netherlands. Information on payments and amounts will be provided within a few weeks when all legal and organizational matters are completed.

From the artists:

“Kilometer-long chains of women in white with flowers are blocking security forces from continuing their violent suppression of entirely peaceful protestors. Factory workers on strike are having their lost wages supplemented by charitable contributions. And everywhere a spirit of joy, pride, and hope permeates this movement, despite the overwhelming repression and force with which they have been met. While Belarusians have real hope for a victory of the righteous, they need your support, your help, and your awareness.”

This album, released on Bandcamp, is comprised of 21 fantastic songs from all over the map: Molchat Doma, Chikiss, Princess Century, and more all donated some tasty darkwave, vapourwave, and synth pop tracks to the cause. A wonderful smattering of sound from an eclectic array of artists, the album is also a terrific gateway to acts you may not yet be familiar with.  This is a fantastic album in its own right; all the better that it’s going toward peace and justice in Belarus.

You name the price.

Morrissey has now bashed crowdfunding:

Morrissey is in a weird space at the moment, isn’t he? He’s technically unsigned, but can sell out four consecutive nights at Sydney Opera House for the end of May. And while a seven piece mariachi tribute band called Mexrrissey are storming the internet’s headlines for existing and being quite good, the real Morrissey is filtering his public opinions beneath UK radars via foreign language interviews. The latest? A chat with a Spanish newspaper. His hot take? Crowdsourcing sucks. In the interview with El Pais, which ran yesterday, Morrissey said of bands who have taken to crowdfunding: “It is a desperate measure, and insulting to your audience. We have already provided sufficient amounts of money. What is the next thing you’re going to ask? What brush our teeth?”

Okay…does this mean the Mozzer does not approve of Amanda Palmer who famously raised nearly $1.2 million via Kickstarter and now continues to crowfund via Patreon?  He is performing with her on July 25th  at the San Jose Event Center after all.

AFP has no comment on the matter:
