The inaugural Dark Ceremony Festival, meticulously curated to blend timeless classic post-punk with the innovative edge of modern synth and darkwave, is set to take over White Oak Music Hall in Houston, Texas, on June 15th. This event is set to celebrate the legacy and evolution of these intertwined genres, showcasing a diverse lineup that highlights both genre-defining classics and cutting-edge acts poised to redefine the scene. For one night, attendees will be immersed in the depth and diversity of a sound that has captivated listeners for generations, all within the vibrant atmosphere of one of Texas’s most iconic music venues.

The lineup features rising stars and Texas natives Twin Tribes, who are set to take the stage with their shadow-drenched melodies. Their ability to weave the darkness of 80s post-punk with atmospheric synths and driving basslines has earned them a place as torchbearers of the genre.

Clan of Xymox, with their rich four-decade history, continues to be a pivotal force in the darkwave scene, weaving innovative synth work with atmospheric aesthetics that delve into the more melancholic realms of New Wave.

Urban Heat, hailing from the vibrant musical landscape of Austin, offers a modern synth-driven take on post-punk. Their sound, edged with the rawness of the city’s rock heritage and polished with a contemporary sheen, creates a soundscape that is at once gritty and sleek, commanding attention and stirring the soul.

Manchester post-punk legends Chameleons will take us through a retrospective journey with their timeless tracks. As pioneers who helped shape the sonic blueprint of post-punk, their presence at ‘Dark Ceremony’ promises to be a pilgrimage to the roots of the genre for many attendees.

Lathe of Heaven will carry the banner of anarcho post-punk into the night, their music resonating with the spirit of resistance and the unvarnished truth, channeling the essence of the genre’s early days into the present with unbridled energy and purpose.

Body of Light is set to illuminate the evening with their shimmering synth-pop melodies. Their music is a nostalgic nod to the neon glow of the 80s, reimagined for today’s audience in a vivid soundscape that’s both captivating and danceable.

Also from Austin, Haunt Me crafts their own brand of romantic darkwave, conjuring a sound that is as haunting as it is enchanting. Their melodies are a siren call to the heart, weaving tales of shadowed romance into their lush compositions.

As the ceremony unfolds, each act contributes its own voice to the night’s chorus. Curse Mackey, a figure known for his hypnotic presence, bridges the divide between industrial rhythms and the raw emotion of goth rock. Then there’s SINE, the electrifying brainchild of Rona Rougeheart, where aggressive rhythms meet sultry vocals in a dance of power and introspection. Adding to the eclectic mix, Glass Spells from San Diego envelops the audience in their distinctive synth-pop sound, blending hypnotic female vocals with the sharp resonance of synths and the pulsating drive of bass lines, creating an immersive experience that interlaces the depth of indie and post-punk with the vibrancy of modern electronic beats. Rounding out the lineup is the classic Minnesota goth rock act Autumn.

Dark Ceremony is quickly morphing into the ultimate must-attend for anyone who’s ever donned black eyeliner and swayed to haunting rhythms. It’s a spiritual journey for the black-clad faithful, a bridge spanning from the hallowed grounds of Manchester’s gritty clubs to the pulsing heart of contemporary Austin. This event relives the glory days with a wink and a nod to the present.

Tickets for the festival will go on presale starting Thursday, March 7th at 10 AM, followed by the public onsale beginning Friday, March 8th at 10 AM.

Meet the artists:

Pam Risourié

Pam Risourié, a Parisian band, debuted their first album ‘Days of Distortion‘ last March. The album was recorded in the scenic Normandy and boasts an impressive production team: mixed and produced by Lucas Ramos at OneTwoPassIt Studio, known for his work with artists like Guts and Frustration, and mastered by Simon Scott, the acclaimed drummer of the iconic shoegaze band Slowdive.

Days of Distortion‘ is akin to an underground odyssey, reminiscent of a dream fragmenting and reverberating through walls of guitar sounds. The album delves into a mental landscape, exploring themes of derealization, hypersensitivity, and love.”

Resplandor

Resplandor, based in the Netherlands, has made a significant mark in the shoegaze music scene. Their latest albums, Pleamar and Tristeza, were crafted with the expertise of Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins) and mastered by Simon Scott (Slowdive).2023 also saw the release of a 15th-anniversary deluxe edition of Pleamar, which includes the original album plus remixes in a double LP format.

The band’s impressive history includes supporting iconic groups like The Cure — most recently in Lima, Peru, on November 22, 2023, as part of The Cure’s South American Tour 2023. Resplandor’s reputation extends beyond supporting The Cure in 2013 and 2023; they have also shared stages with Slowdive, The Jesus & Mary Chain, The House Of Love, and The Radio Dept. Their festival appearances are equally notable, with performances at Grauzone (The Hague, NL), SXSW (Austin, USA), Culture Collide (Los Angeles, USA), and Veltrac Music Festival (Lima, PE), showcasing their global appeal through tours across Europe, North, and South America.

Eosine

Eosine, a Belgian rock quartet, merges the noisy and ethereal vibes of shoegaze with progressive structures, anchored by harmonious vocals and heartfelt melodies. Their intense, psychedelic performances, which won them the First Prize at Concours Circuit 2022, led to the release of their second EP ‘Coralline‘, mixed and mastered by Mark Gardener of Ride. Capturing the live energy in their evolving recordings, they’ve shared stages with notable bands like The Psychotic Monks, Ditz, Lambrini Girls, and BRNS, leaving a memorable impression at the Left Of The Dial festival in Rotterdam.

Mark your calendars for a weekend of underground culture like no other: the eleventh edition of The Netherlands’ renowned Grauzone Festival is hitting The Hague from February 9-11, 2024, and it’s shaping up to be a colossal gathering for the counter-culture vanguard. Known for drawing an eclectic mix of people from all corners of the globe, Grauzone remains a cultural touchstone and melting pot that celebrates the unorthodox and rebellious power of counterculture creativity as a vital force in our societal discourse.

Grauzone Festival 2024 has recently added new names to an already stacked lineup that includes some of the most renowned names in the darkwave scene. This year’s event features headline acts such as She Past Away, The Soft Moon, Cold Cave, and Drab Majesty, among others, as well as rising stars such as Spike Hellis, Buzz Kull, Curses, MVTANT, Lathe of Heaven, SDH, and Harsh Symmetry.

Here are the newly announced acts:

Dream Wife: A British feminist art-punk trio and one of the most exciting live acts at the moment, known for their unparalleled energy and performances at festivals like Lollapalooza, Primavera, and Laneway. An act not to be missed, especially for fans of Hole and Le Tigre. Check out their single Love You More below:

ULTRA SUNN  returns to Grauzone! Following an overwhelming performance last edition in the packed small hall, the band will elevate to the main stage of Paard this year. The band has just returned from an extensive Latin American tour and is ready to capture hearts with their powerful ‘cold wave with EBM’ sound.

Italian/American Italo/synthpop trio Nuovo Testamento is on the verge of becoming a major name. Their second studio album, Love Lines, was mixed and mastered by Maurizio Baggio (Boy Harsher; The Soft Moon) and was our choice for album of the year, 2023.

A multi-faceted talent from France, Malvina, a singer, composer, pianist, and conductor, makes her debut at Grauzone Festival with a live electro/techno set infused with influences of trap and metal.

Hailing from Iran, Khorshid Dabdeh is an accomplished tar, tanbour, and setar player who established a musical collective, “Jansouz,“ named after the artistic name of her grandfather; a renowned maestro in the field of singing and the cultural history of Iranian music.  In the Netherlands, she has performed at Le Guess Who and on national television.

Another Dutch premiere comes from the delightful Gent-based band Lézard. They create a danceable sound of ‘geometric-proto-disco punk’ with influences from New York No Wave, Talking Heads, and XTC.

Bowl, a quintet from Utrecht, will also make an appearance. They stood out at Popronde with their intense, razor-sharp, and fresh post-punk that drips with energy and determination.

Lastly, we have another premiere with the very young Dutch duo Desinteresse, who is already making waves worldwide and will steal the hearts of Grauzone visitors for the first time with their pitch-black coldwave. More dark sound from Dutch soil is The Hague’s Lifeless Past, for fans of Sisters of Mercy.

There will also be some terrific DJ sets: S.A.T.I.N, is the electrifying collaboration between renowned UK DJ and producer Ireen Amnes, and Ash Luk (infinity division / minimal violence). Rotterdam-based DJ Samira, a resident of Operator Radio, will mix dark electro and wave tracks. Kim Peers will do a post-punk, wave and techno set, as well as Grauzone newcomer Graftak. With his renowned Drag Me to Hell parties, Graftak has carved his name into the European music scene with his electrifying blend of darkwave, electro, EBM, and hard techno.

Grauzone Festival is gearing up to transform some of The Hague’s most iconic venues into hubs of artistic and musical revelry, including Paard, Het Koorenhuis, The Gray Space In The Middle, and the Paardcafé. Each of these venues will play host to a segment of the festival’s diverse offerings. Vegan food will be available in the foyer of PAARD. This year, in addition to Karma Kebab (delicious, 100% plant-powered kebab with local vegetables and grains), Koko will offer authentic vegan Surinamese dishes.

Grauzone is also ramping up to unveil an expansive GRAUKUNST art exhibition, along with a series of performances, a curated film program, and thought-provoking seminars.

The festival’s knack for innovation and excellence hasn’t gone unnoticed: this year they were nominated three times for the prestigious Ijzeren Podiumdier prize by The Association of Dutch Pop Venues and Festivals (VNPF). Grauzone is contending for Best Festival, Best Marketing and Best Sustainability Performance, underlining their commitment to not just entertaining but also making a positive impact.

“This feels like a recognition of the hard work of the past years,” said organizer Natasja Alers. “Especially now that we have been nominated twice in a row, and also for Sustainability, which is a great acknowledgment for us as a Vegan festival since 2013.”

Since its heartfelt inception in Chicago in 2012 to memorialize a lost comrade, The Cold Waves Festival has grown its roots, now resonating from coast to coast in both Los Angeles and New York. Yet, Chicago remains its pulsating heart, hosting an annual multi-day festival every September. Cold Waves becomes a confluence of iconic industrial, goth, and darkwave legends, interspersed with the verve of budding talents.

In addition to providing an unforgettable musical experience, Cold Waves Festival, now in its eleventh year, is committed to giving back to the community. A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit Darkest Before Dawn and other mental health charities.

For more information and tickets, go here.

Meet some of the artists who played the NYC branch of Cold Waves this year at Le Poisson Rouge, located in Manhattan’s famed West Village, including some powerful moments from their performances and even a few backstage antics. Several of these acts will be making encore appearances in the Windy City this weekend, and Los Angeles the following week.

Lana Del Rabies

Lana Del Rabies, the brainchild of Phoenix electronic artist Sam An, elegantly defies easy categorization. This avant-garde creation melds the dark allure of gothic resonance and metal with whispers of trip-hop, and nods to post-punk luminaries such as Fad Gadget and John Foxx. Delia Derbyshire’s spectral BBC experiments, Stockhausen’s daring experimentalism, and Puce Mary’s auditory collages peer through the artist’s unsettling ambient wisps, transporting listeners into liminal realms, where the boundaries blur between dreams and wakefulness. This ethereal journey, layered with mysticism, promises an experience steeped in the esoteric.

Ash Code

Italian dark wave synth act Ash Code was founded by keyboard player Claudia Nottebella and twin brothers Alessandro and Adriano Belluccio. They masterfully blend influences, ranging from early Depeche Mode, The Sisters of Mercy to post-punk, Synthpop, coldwave & EBM, bringing with them a revamp of solid drum machines, haunting synths and driving bass lines. Molchat Doma, Clan Of Xymox and Minuit Machine made remixes for Ash Code songs, and Ash Code made remixes for acts like She Past Away and Agent Side Grinder.

Orphx

Toronto electronic outfit Orphx (Rich Oddie and Christina Sealey) have been creating their unique fusion of rhythm and noise for three decades, combining elements of techno with the experimental techniques and critical spirit of industrial music.  Orphx releases are often based around social, political or psychological/spiritual themes.

Sierra

Sierra, a multifaceted French musician, composer, and DJ, crafts a sonic tapestry that oscillates between EBM and darkwave. Her sound is infused with techno, synthwave, and unexpected undertones of trap. With a cinematic flair, Sierra’s compositions strike a delicate balance: they juxtapose the rawness of violence with melancholic undertones, interweaving moments of sweetness and stark brutality. This eclectic fusion establishes Sierra as a creator of her own distinct, hybrid sound.

JK Flesh

Under the moniker JK Flesh, English virtuoso Justin Broadrick manifests his electronic odysseys. Tracing its origins to his 1990s collaboration with Kevin Martin in Techno Animal, Broadrick ventured into the solo realm with a JK Flesh album in 2012. Distinct from his celebrated ventures, Godflesh and Jesu, JK Flesh eschews metal riffs for pure electronic pulses. Over time, the character of JK Flesh’s output has evolved, adopting minimalist and dub nuances, yet always rooted in industrial grit. JK Flesh’s discography boasts four albums, five EPs, a collaborative split with Prurient, and a slew of remixes.

Amid the languid days of last summer, the European music scene witnessed a notable performance by Berlin’s beloved darkwave duo, NNHMN (pronounced ‘nonhuman’), at Cologne’s Amphi Festival. Their rendition of “Hungrige Liebe” at the 2023 edition of the festival was more than just a mere performance of a song—it was a special moment necessitating visual documentation.

Simone Pellegrini, the London-based director, captured this mesmerizing rendition of the “Hungrige Liebe” in a brilliantly shot live video. Pellegrini, known for his previous collaboration with NNHMN on “Perigee Syzygy,” has outdone himself, presenting a visual feast that captures the moment perfectly. The clip is a masterclass in atmospheric storytelling through the live music medium, echoing the very ethos of the song, which will indeed leave you hungry for more.

Watch below:

Lee’s voice, reminiscent of vintage Hollywood sirens, is the pièce de résistance of this visual odyssey. Her sultry tones, evoking whispered confidences shared in dimly lit, opulent lounges, meld harmoniously with the hypnotic synths, drawing the elite and discerning into the heart of NNHMN’s world. Their music, a sophisticated blend of dark disco grooves and gothic allure, has an air of timeless elegance, reminiscent of classic vinyl records played in chic salons.

NNHMN’s summer release, CIRCLE OF DOOM, has already become a staple in clubs and warehouse parties worldwide, even garnering the admiration of luminaries like Boy George.

Find the album here.

For those in the know, staying connected with NNHMN is de rigueur:

Beaming from the critical accolades their 26th album has garnered, The Church, enduring luminaries of psychedelic alternative rock, have revealed their intentions for a second sojourn across the American landscape. Their latest opus, The Hypnogogue, will be reverberating once more through more venues as they announce a new series of  U.S. dates to their 2023 tour itinerary.

The Hypnogogue has come to life on stage during our U.S. and Australian tours this year,” says frontman Steve Kilbey. “Every night we play, I understand more about what it is. I am so buoyed by the audience’s enthusiasm for the songs and stories behind the songs that I’m constantly reinventing and recalibrating the whole shebang!”

In this album, the band’s customary blend of melodic psych-rock undertones embraces a divergent path; a conceptual journey exploring the eerie labyrinth of a futuristic dystopia. This striking change of direction proves to be the ideal landscape for the hauntingly mournful timbre of Steve Kilbey’s vocals, painting the sonic image of an uncanny reality that’s intriguingly fitting for the band’s evolving sound.

“Not in my wildest dreams did I expect all the love that has been thrown at this record by the audiences and the critics,” says frontman Steve Kilbey. “I’m excited to play a whole bunch of new places and take this incredible version of The Church to wherever folks want to hear us.”

The tour kicks off on September 28th at Seattle, WA’s Neptune Theater, commencing an odyssey circling the continent, including shows in SoCal, New Mexico, Georgia, Florida, Pennsylvania and Illinois.

The Church will also be offering a limited number of VIP packages on this tour, which will include a show ticket, early venue access, an invitation to the band’s soundcheck, a special meet & greet with the band, exclusive merch items, and watching a portion of the show itself from the side of the stage (where available).

“I feel like a heavyweight fighter getting into the ring, pretty confident that he is going to land a knockout punch,” he laughs. “I’m most excited for anyone who hasn’t heard this record and also those who have as they feel all the love and work that goes into these songs coming  to life every night!”

Watch No Other You from The Hypnogogue:

In addition to the tour, The Church will be releasing a digital deluxe edition of The Hypnogogue which will include additional songs not included on the original 13-track album. to be released this fall to coincide with the tour.  More info soon!

Forty years into their existence, The Church continues to sculpt their cinematic signature blend of indie rock, glittering post-punk, icy dreampop, and cosmic post-rock with an intrepid spirit, never merely retracing their prior steps. The ensemble, as it stands today, is completed with the well-versed partnership of Tim Powles; guitarist Ian Haug, previously from Powderfinger, who integrated into the band in 2013, and Jeffrey Cain of Remy Zero, a seasoned touring multi-instrumentalist who has since become a full-time component of The Church, following Peter Koppes’ departure in early 2020.

The Church further enhanced their dynamic lineup with the enlistment of Ashley Naylor, a mainstay of Paul Kelly’s touring ensemble and recognized as one of Australia’s most respected and adept guitarists with his affiliations to Even, The Grapes, and The Stems. Spanning their extensive musical journey, they’ve spun a tapestry of memorable hits, such as “Under the Milky Way,” “Reptile,” “The Unguarded Moment,” and “Almost With You.”

They also recently gave a gripping performance at the 2022’s Cruel World Festival, alongside legends like Blondie, Bauhaus, and Morrissey, which attracted high praise and critical acclaim. Don’t miss this show in your town!
