The inaugural Dark Ceremony Festival, meticulously curated to blend timeless classic post-punk with the innovative edge of modern synth and darkwave, is set to take over White Oak Music Hall in Houston, Texas, on June 15th. This event is set to celebrate the legacy and evolution of these intertwined genres, showcasing a diverse lineup that highlights both genre-defining classics and cutting-edge acts poised to redefine the scene. For one night, attendees will be immersed in the depth and diversity of a sound that has captivated listeners for generations, all within the vibrant atmosphere of one of Texas’s most iconic music venues.

The lineup features rising stars and Texas natives Twin Tribes, who are set to take the stage with their shadow-drenched melodies. Their ability to weave the darkness of 80s post-punk with atmospheric synths and driving basslines has earned them a place as torchbearers of the genre.

Clan of Xymox, with their rich four-decade history, continues to be a pivotal force in the darkwave scene, weaving innovative synth work with atmospheric aesthetics that delve into the more melancholic realms of New Wave.

Urban Heat, hailing from the vibrant musical landscape of Austin, offers a modern synth-driven take on post-punk. Their sound, edged with the rawness of the city’s rock heritage and polished with a contemporary sheen, creates a soundscape that is at once gritty and sleek, commanding attention and stirring the soul.

Manchester post-punk legends Chameleons will take us through a retrospective journey with their timeless tracks. As pioneers who helped shape the sonic blueprint of post-punk, their presence at ‘Dark Ceremony’ promises to be a pilgrimage to the roots of the genre for many attendees.

Lathe of Heaven will carry the banner of anarcho post-punk into the night, their music resonating with the spirit of resistance and the unvarnished truth, channeling the essence of the genre’s early days into the present with unbridled energy and purpose.

Body of Light is set to illuminate the evening with their shimmering synth-pop melodies. Their music is a nostalgic nod to the neon glow of the 80s, reimagined for today’s audience in a vivid soundscape that’s both captivating and danceable.

Also from Austin, Haunt Me crafts their own brand of romantic darkwave, conjuring a sound that is as haunting as it is enchanting. Their melodies are a siren call to the heart, weaving tales of shadowed romance into their lush compositions.

As the ceremony unfolds, each act contributes its own voice to the night’s chorus. Curse Mackey, a figure known for his hypnotic presence, bridges the divide between industrial rhythms and the raw emotion of goth rock. Then there’s SINE, the electrifying brainchild of Rona Rougeheart, where aggressive rhythms meet sultry vocals in a dance of power and introspection. Adding to the eclectic mix, Glass Spells from San Diego envelops the audience in their distinctive synth-pop sound, blending hypnotic female vocals with the sharp resonance of synths and the pulsating drive of bass lines, creating an immersive experience that interlaces the depth of indie and post-punk with the vibrancy of modern electronic beats. Rounding out the lineup is the classic Minnesota goth rock act Autumn.

Dark Ceremony is quickly morphing into the ultimate must-attend for anyone who’s ever donned black eyeliner and swayed to haunting rhythms. It’s a spiritual journey for the black-clad faithful, a bridge spanning from the hallowed grounds of Manchester’s gritty clubs to the pulsing heart of contemporary Austin. This event relives the glory days with a wink and a nod to the present.

Tickets for the festival will go on presale starting Thursday, March 7th at 10 AM, followed by the public onsale beginning Friday, March 8th at 10 AM.

Darkness descends upon Munich this June for another fantastically curated edition of the city’s annual Grey Scale Festival. Set against the industrial charm of Muffathalle, this festival transcends the ordinary, welcoming those drawn to the darker, more melodic side of music. On June 22nd, Grey Scale will present an eclectic lineup that bridges the gap between the raw, pulsating energy of post-punk and the ethereal realms of dark wave, while synthpop and industrial beats provide a dance-driven counterpoint, weaving a tapestry of sound as diverse as its audience. Kontravoid takes Manhattan

Mask up! Kontravoid strikes again! Now, the mysterious Canadian Angeleno entity has unleashed a brand new video for his latest work. “For What It Is.” This lead single, a chillingly atmospheric dark electronic piece from his upcoming album “Detachment,” is visually brought to life by the skilled director and musician Chris Campion, known for his work with Multiple Man and Normal Bias, resulting in a striking visual experience that is Kontavoid’s best yet.

Set in New York City, our masked protagonist plays at being a tourist – and a game of chess; he also takes his chances at the TKTS stand, lurks outside a peepshow, and wanders aimlessly around the neon-soaked nightlife of the seventh circle of hell (aka Times Square). It’s a lonely, solitary journey through the Big Apple – but don’t pity him. In this city of millions, he finds an unexpected kinship with a feline friend.

Watch the video below:

For over a decade, Kontravoid has stood as an enigmatic and influential figure. The alter ego of Darkwave and EBM maestro Cameron Findlay has been carving a unique niche in the genre since the release of his eponymous debut in 2012, displaying a distinct sound that transcends simple labels. Melding elements of EBM, Darkwave, and electro, with gothic undertones, Kontravoid’s music resonates like a haunting, indelible dream.

His previous full-length album, 2019’s Too Deep, throbs with an energy as if sourced directly from the obscured, misty dancefloors of a rave held in the catacombs. Following this, the 2021 Faceless EP further explores these haunted territories, with ghostly melodies that drift through a strobe-lit haze, echoing the call of the wandering spirits of the night, real or imagined.

Anticipation is building for Kontravoid’s upcoming full-length album, Detachment, scheduled for release on March 1st via Artoffact Records. The launch of this eagerly awaited LP will be celebrated at the Lodge Room in Los Angeles that same day. The event promises an exciting lineup, featuring performances by Buzz Kull and God’s Mom, alongside G•S•E•D and Sayaka Nono as DJs.

Meet the artists:

Pam Risourié

Pam Risourié, a Parisian band, debuted their first album ‘Days of Distortion‘ last March. The album was recorded in the scenic Normandy and boasts an impressive production team: mixed and produced by Lucas Ramos at OneTwoPassIt Studio, known for his work with artists like Guts and Frustration, and mastered by Simon Scott, the acclaimed drummer of the iconic shoegaze band Slowdive.

Days of Distortion‘ is akin to an underground odyssey, reminiscent of a dream fragmenting and reverberating through walls of guitar sounds. The album delves into a mental landscape, exploring themes of derealization, hypersensitivity, and love.”

Resplandor

Resplandor, based in the Netherlands, has made a significant mark in the shoegaze music scene. Their latest albums, Pleamar and Tristeza, were crafted with the expertise of Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins) and mastered by Simon Scott (Slowdive).2023 also saw the release of a 15th-anniversary deluxe edition of Pleamar, which includes the original album plus remixes in a double LP format.

The band’s impressive history includes supporting iconic groups like The Cure — most recently in Lima, Peru, on November 22, 2023, as part of The Cure’s South American Tour 2023. Resplandor’s reputation extends beyond supporting The Cure in 2013 and 2023; they have also shared stages with Slowdive, The Jesus & Mary Chain, The House Of Love, and The Radio Dept. Their festival appearances are equally notable, with performances at Grauzone (The Hague, NL), SXSW (Austin, USA), Culture Collide (Los Angeles, USA), and Veltrac Music Festival (Lima, PE), showcasing their global appeal through tours across Europe, North, and South America.

Eosine

Eosine, a Belgian rock quartet, merges the noisy and ethereal vibes of shoegaze with progressive structures, anchored by harmonious vocals and heartfelt melodies. Their intense, psychedelic performances, which won them the First Prize at Concours Circuit 2022, led to the release of their second EP ‘Coralline‘, mixed and mastered by Mark Gardener of Ride. Capturing the live energy in their evolving recordings, they’ve shared stages with notable bands like The Psychotic Monks, Ditz, Lambrini Girls, and BRNS, leaving a memorable impression at the Left Of The Dial festival in Rotterdam.

WAN

WAN masterfully blends lyrics and music, creating a unique and thrilling sound. Their music features an enchanting voice harmonizing with diverse textures, from alternative electronic to dynamic shoegaze riffs. This fusion results in a sound that’s compelling, intense, and raw.

Their upcoming debut LP, produced by Jordan Lawlor (J. Laser, M83), is slated for release at the end of 2023. Meanwhile, their explosive single ‘Run‘ offers a tantalizing preview of what’s to come.

Life On Venus

Life On Venus is a shoegaze/dream pop trio from Moscow with two previous critically acclaimed studio albums making them one of the most acclaimed and beloved shoegaze / dream pop bands around. Automatic Music is proud to release on vinyl their third full-length album titled ‘Homewards (AE028) and present it at Automatic Noise Festival at a listening party.

Formed in 1970 by Ralf Hütter and the late Florian Schneider, Kraftwerk initially experimented with avant-garde approaches as an art collective. By the mid-1970s, they achieved fame with their innovative electronic style, influencing electro, hip-hop, and techno.

Kraftwerk’s lyrics intricately wove themes of post-war European urban life and technology, encapsulating experiences like car travels on the Autobahn, train journeys, and the use of home computers. Deeply influenced by the modernist Bauhaus aesthetic, they viewed art as fundamentally intertwined with daily life. Their lyrics, often minimalistic, skillfully balanced an innocent appreciation and a subtle caution regarding the modern world. This lyrical approach not only played a key role in the rhythm of their songs but also delved into the paradoxes of modern urban existence.

Kraftwerk’s songs frequently highlighted the simultaneous sense of alienation and the joy that modern technology brings, presenting a complex, multifaceted view of contemporary life. Their use of synthesizers and drum machines, in turn, revolutionized music. In 2019, Kraftwerk were nominated into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and were finally inducted in 2021. Marking half a century of their sublime pioneering electronic soundscapes, the iconic German ensemble are set to electrify Los Angeles with a groundbreaking nine-show residency at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the esteemed home of the LA Philharmonic. This monumental event at the end of May celebrates 50 years of Kraftwerk’s revolutionary presence.

Each of the first eight nights promises a deep dive into Kraftwerk’s influential discography, showcasing one of their seminal albums – a journey from the groundbreaking rhythms of 1974’s Autobahn to the pulsating beats of 2003’s Tour de France. It’s an unprecedented opportunity for fans to experience the evolution of electronic music, narrated live by its very pioneers.

The residency’s finale, on the ninth night, is poised to be a spectacular ode to Kraftwerk’s enduring legacy. Attendees can expect a curated selection spanning the band’s illustrious career. Complementing the full album performances, each concert will also feature a secondary setlist, offering a broader exploration of Kraftwerk’s rich catalogue.

Tickets go on sale Thursday, January 11 at 10 AM Pacific. Presales start Wednesday at 10 AM Pacific. For all ticket info, visit here.

Mark your calendars for a weekend of underground culture like no other: the eleventh edition of The Netherlands’ renowned Grauzone Festival is hitting The Hague from February 9-11, 2024, and it’s shaping up to be a colossal gathering for the counter-culture vanguard. Known for drawing an eclectic mix of people from all corners of the globe, Grauzone remains a cultural touchstone and melting pot that celebrates the unorthodox and rebellious power of counterculture creativity as a vital force in our societal discourse.

Grauzone Festival 2024 has recently added new names to an already stacked lineup that includes some of the most renowned names in the darkwave scene. This year’s event features headline acts such as She Past Away, The Soft Moon, Cold Cave, and Drab Majesty, among others, as well as rising stars such as Spike Hellis, Buzz Kull, Curses, MVTANT, Lathe of Heaven, SDH, and Harsh Symmetry.

Here are the newly announced acts:

Dream Wife: A British feminist art-punk trio and one of the most exciting live acts at the moment, known for their unparalleled energy and performances at festivals like Lollapalooza, Primavera, and Laneway. An act not to be missed, especially for fans of Hole and Le Tigre. Check out their single Love You More below:

ULTRA SUNN  returns to Grauzone! Following an overwhelming performance last edition in the packed small hall, the band will elevate to the main stage of Paard this year. The band has just returned from an extensive Latin American tour and is ready to capture hearts with their powerful ‘cold wave with EBM’ sound.

Italian/American Italo/synthpop trio Nuovo Testamento is on the verge of becoming a major name. Their second studio album, Love Lines, was mixed and mastered by Maurizio Baggio (Boy Harsher; The Soft Moon) and was our choice for album of the year, 2023.

A multi-faceted talent from France, Malvina, a singer, composer, pianist, and conductor, makes her debut at Grauzone Festival with a live electro/techno set infused with influences of trap and metal.

Hailing from Iran, Khorshid Dabdeh is an accomplished tar, tanbour, and setar player who established a musical collective, “Jansouz,“ named after the artistic name of her grandfather; a renowned maestro in the field of singing and the cultural history of Iranian music.  In the Netherlands, she has performed at Le Guess Who and on national television.

Another Dutch premiere comes from the delightful Gent-based band Lézard. They create a danceable sound of ‘geometric-proto-disco punk’ with influences from New York No Wave, Talking Heads, and XTC.

Bowl, a quintet from Utrecht, will also make an appearance. They stood out at Popronde with their intense, razor-sharp, and fresh post-punk that drips with energy and determination.

Lastly, we have another premiere with the very young Dutch duo Desinteresse, who is already making waves worldwide and will steal the hearts of Grauzone visitors for the first time with their pitch-black coldwave. More dark sound from Dutch soil is The Hague’s Lifeless Past, for fans of Sisters of Mercy.

There will also be some terrific DJ sets: S.A.T.I.N, is the electrifying collaboration between renowned UK DJ and producer Ireen Amnes, and Ash Luk (infinity division / minimal violence). Rotterdam-based DJ Samira, a resident of Operator Radio, will mix dark electro and wave tracks. Kim Peers will do a post-punk, wave and techno set, as well as Grauzone newcomer Graftak. With his renowned Drag Me to Hell parties, Graftak has carved his name into the European music scene with his electrifying blend of darkwave, electro, EBM, and hard techno.

Grauzone Festival is gearing up to transform some of The Hague’s most iconic venues into hubs of artistic and musical revelry, including Paard, Het Koorenhuis, The Gray Space In The Middle, and the Paardcafé. Each of these venues will play host to a segment of the festival’s diverse offerings. Vegan food will be available in the foyer of PAARD. This year, in addition to Karma Kebab (delicious, 100% plant-powered kebab with local vegetables and grains), Koko will offer authentic vegan Surinamese dishes.

Grauzone is also ramping up to unveil an expansive GRAUKUNST art exhibition, along with a series of performances, a curated film program, and thought-provoking seminars.

The festival’s knack for innovation and excellence hasn’t gone unnoticed: this year they were nominated three times for the prestigious Ijzeren Podiumdier prize by The Association of Dutch Pop Venues and Festivals (VNPF). Grauzone is contending for Best Festival, Best Marketing and Best Sustainability Performance, underlining their commitment to not just entertaining but also making a positive impact.

“This feels like a recognition of the hard work of the past years,” said organizer Natasja Alers. “Especially now that we have been nominated twice in a row, and also for Sustainability, which is a great acknowledgment for us as a Vegan festival since 2013.”

In what’s shaping up to be a monumental third annual Cruel World festival, set for May 11, 2024, at the picturesque Brookside at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, the lineup reads like a who’s who of new wave and post-punk royalty. Headliners Duran Duran, riding the wave of their sixteenth studio album “Danse Macabre,” are set to bring a hauntingly melodious energy to the stage.

The festival boasts a robust roster, including the likes of Interpol, Blondie, and Simple Minds, who are poised to deliver performances resonating with both nostalgic charm and contemporary relevance. Placebo and Soft Cell are also on the bill, promising to blend their quintessential sounds with the festival’s eclectic atmosphere.

Notably, Ministry will revisit their roots, performing tracks from “With Sympathy” and “Twitch,” offering a glimpse into their formative synthpop and 80s industrial sound. Gary Numan, another pioneer of the genre, is slated to perform his groundbreaking album “The Pleasure Principle,” ensuring a journey through the synthesizer-driven landscapes of the late 70s.

Adding to this rich tapestry of sounds, Tones on Tail, featuring Daniel Ash and Kevin Haskins of Bauhaus and Love and Rockets fame, are set to be a special guest.

Also gracing the stage is DREAMCAR, the supergroup amalgamation of AFI’s Davey Havok and members of No Doubt, whose new wave renditions add a contemporary twist to the genre.

With a lineup that spans the gamut from The Jesus and Mary Chain to The Mission UK, and from The Stranglers to French Police, the festival is more than just a concert; it’s a cultural touchstone that encapsulates the spirit of an era. It’s a convergence of the past and present, a celebration of the enduring impact these bands have had on music and culture.

Since its inception in 2022, Dresden’s Cold-Hearted Festival has quickly become an essential annual event in the European darkwave music scene, selling out for two consecutive years. Returning in 2024, it continues to uphold its reputation as one of the best single-day festivals in Europe for darkwave and post-punk music. This year’s lineup is as compelling as ever. The festival’s 2024 edition is now multicity, scheduled for November 15th at Bochum Matrix and November 16th at Dresden Alter Schlachthof.

British-Swiss/German duo Lebanon Hanover leads the pack of first announcements of next year’s festival lineup, bringing their iconic coldwave-influenced post-punk sound. They are joined by Linea Aspera, who have captivated audiences with their darkwave and EBM style since their 2019 reunion.

Twin Tribes, hailing from Texas, brings a distinct atmosphere to the international music scene with their Mexican-American-influenced darkwave music. Meanwhile, Rendez-Vous, based in Paris, is back with a new album and their lively brand of post-punk. And Rue Oberkampf, an electro band from Germany, is all set to blend 1980s dark wave with modern techno to create a captivating dance driven sound.

The festival also features rising stars like Brussels-based Ultra Sunn, whose “Keep Your Eyes Peeled” has already become a club staple, along with Berlin’s Deus Ex Lumina and Parisian synth mastermind Sydney Valette. Rounding out the initial announcement of the festival lineup is the Greek dark synth-wave duo Kalte Nacht, known for their evocative sounds and dark lyricism.

With its track record of sold-out shows and a lineup that spans the spectrum of darkwave and post-punk, Cold-Hearted Festival 2024 is poised to be an unmissable event for fans across Europe and beyond. In a brilliant collision of raw and visceral talent, the Berlin-based Greek artist Unhuman, known for his work with the BITE label, joins forces with the iconic queer wave figure Petra Flurr. Their collaboration, Unhuman & Petra Flurr, delves into the realm of synthpunk-technoid music. This partnership is marked by a blend of intense rhythms and fluid melodies, characterized by a style that is both androgynous and undeniably sexual. The duo brings to the forefront a distinct genre they’ve termed ‘queer death techno,’ executed with more than a hint of cheeky irreverence.

Unhuman & Petra Flurr’s music encapsulates the evolving sonic landscape of Berlin, traversing through the city’s rich musical heritage. Their sound is a retrospective journey, starting from the raw, rebellious energy of the punk scene in the 1980s, weaving through the pulsating rhythms of the techno movement that dominated the 1990s, and culminating in the contemporary sounds that define Berlin today. This blend not only pays homage to the city’s diverse musical epochs – but also blares the spotlight on their ability to meld these influences into a unique, contemporary expression.

Today they release a performance video for the ages – an hourlong behemoth called Unhuman + Petra Flurr Live at “Mala Vida X BITE, filmed at their album release party at SO36 Berlin on 11 August 2023. If you can’t physically make it to see these two stalwarts of the Berlin club scene, this is the next best thing – make sure to blare the volume loudly…and join in the dance.

Watch below:

The video production and editing were done by AK Shoots Cinematography, with cinematography by Andreas Kühn and Pinia Witt. The lightshow was created by Melanopic Art, with mastering by Rell Studio.
