Brazillian Artist and graphic designer Butcher Billy has said his farewells to Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee, who passed away at the age of 95.

Billy had gained notoriety for his Marvel post-punk crossover mock covers that featured music icons such as Robert Smith, Siouxsie Sioux, Morrissey.

In an interview with PARANÁ, Billy reminisced how  he had two years prior honored Stan Lee in Life, but isn’t sure if the Marvel Editor in Chief emeritus ever saw the work, but he is glad his designs can be associated with the icon of comic book history, who became a pop culture personality in his own right:

“He was a cartoon storyteller” says Billy, “he became an actor in live-action series, in movies, he became the voice and face of what he created.”

Billy has a special fondness for Spider-Man, whose very human struggles were in contrast to the godlike figures of DC comics:

People [had] been asking me to do a Marvel version since I released the first series.  I never thought it would be interesting until I started sketching the first drawings.  The Vision came quite naturally as I really wanted to add Gary [Numan] to the gang. However I didn’t think it would look as good as it was in my head

When I decided to use DC characters in the first series it was because of the “god” status that they have. However with the Marvel characters I can explore other possibilities for the post-punk singers: for example – the Spider-Man from the 60’s and 70’s has gone through a lot of tragedy…he was funny but also very depressive.  His girlfriend died because of him, and he wanted to give up loads of times. He was always struggling between his life as a hero and his life as normal person, and I think that can parallel the life of a certain Joy Division singer

Marvel characters are a bit more fragile—because they mostly struggle with real life issues, and their issues are always quite personal, and I always found those concepts quite relatable.

According to Billy, he will be contributing illustrations in a article of the life of Stan Lee in the Los Angeles Times this week.

Goths and post-punk fans have been wearing Dr. Martens boots since the World War II era brand was popularized by punks and skins during the late 70s, getting so popular with the underground subculture in the UK that several imitation brands quickly emerged, but only the original had the “Dr. Martens” boots song sung about them by Alexei Sayle sang during in a 1982 episode titled “Oil” from the British TV comedy The Young Ones, and post-punk and new-wave live music show The Tube.

Now, Joy Division and New Order fans can show their love for both bands and Dr. Marten boots by purchasing special edition 1460 eight-eye boots, that feature the cover artwork of both Manchester band’s iconic Peter Saville designed cover artwork featured on several albums.

The Joy Division edition is naturally inspired by the pulsar waves featured on the band’s debut album Unknown Pleasures, sensibly displayed black on black with embossed leather.

“Unknown Pleasures” Dr. Martens boots

There are two New Order inspired designs, with the first being a recreation of the cover art of 1989’s Ibiza inspired album Technique, which features cherub statue against a “bright ombre” purple and magenta background, which is as loud as the electronic music coming out during the birth of rave culture.

“Technique” inspired Docs

The best design of the three has to be the second one inspired by New Order featuring the artwork from 1983’s Power, Corruption and Lies which is printed on “crackle-coated suede to emulate a painted canvas”.

Japan is known for being a country that loves both Fan Service and Fanfiction, and both are in full Otaku effect in the 1980s Japanese music magazine called 8 Beat Gag. The magazine features Manga caricatures of popular western artists of the time—drawn for the most part by manga artist Atsuko Shima.

The wonderfully weird comics feature The Cure’s Robert Smith, David Sylvian and Ryuichi Sakamoto, Dave Vanian, Peter Murphy, Morrissey, Ultravox!, and more in situations ranging from being cute to amazingly bizarre.

We have not been able to translate any of these yet, save for the one below, where The Damned’s Dave Vanian, Duran Duran’s John Taylor, and The Cure’s Robert Smith are complaining about tourist season.

Robert Smith: “The weather is warm, so we are seeing more stupid people out and about”. John Taylor: “If so, i guess we can expect to see many more of them.” Dave Vanian: “mmmhhhhh….”

Here are more from the Robert Smith issue:

Note that Morrissey and Pete Burns are in this panel
Why Can’t I Be You?

David Sylvian issue:

Here is where the full fan fiction treatment is in full effect, with the romantic pairing of Japan’s David Sylvian and electronic music pioneer Ryuichi Sakamoto:

“The main story in the comic involves David being in the UK and missing Ryuichi. He decides to visit Tokyo to further the “romance” and finds himself in competition with Akiko Yano, Ryuichi’s wife. Quite a humorous story written by a woman who was a huge Japan fan. She caricatures herself on the cover as looking very guilty about writing such a homo-erotic story, possibly in parody of the lyrics to ‘Forbidden Colours’.
(Sincere thanks to Craig Peacock for this review).

Additional info on the cover: The front cover shot is an alternate take from the cover of the Japanese 7″ of Forbidden Colours. The back cover picture is from a fashion shoot David and Ryuichi did for an ad campaign for a department store, however it was never used.”-DavidSylvian.net

[dropcap]Meowrrissey[/dropcap] fancies cats—this is a given, as what other animal analogs his temperament more? The Mozzer is often content being left alone to showing this distaste for the human race (but unlike Morrissey cats have to eat meat to survive). Morrissey explains feline love to The Telegraph: “The basic fascination I have with cats is nothing unusual. I find them very intelligent and very superior.” Sounds like Morrissey is a cat indeed.

Recently Consequence Of Sound unearthed an adorable yet infrequently maintained Tumblr, entitled Morrissey With Cats–  Here are a few pictures highlighted from this purrfect place on the web.

Butcher Billy is back—this time crossing over into the Marvel Universe!

People have been asking me to do a Marvel version since I released the first series.  I never thought it would be interesting until I started sketching the first drawings.  The Vision came quite naturally as I really wanted to add Gary to the gang.
