After a groundbreaking 40-plus-year journey that shaped the electronic body music (EBM) landscape, Belgian legends Front 242 have decided to take their final bow on the live stage. The band made the announcement on Saturday, February 24, 2024, aligning with International EBM Day—a nod to their significant impact on the genre.

The “Black Out” tour is a global journey, commencing on August 4 in Lokeren, Belgium, at the Lokerse Feesten and spanning iconic festivals and venues across Europe and the United States. The tour’s U.S. leg starts on September 6 in St. Petersburg, Florida, with notable stops in Philadelphia, Cleveland, Los Angeles, and notably, Chicago. In Chicago, Front 242 will make two special appearances presented by Cold Waves, underscoring the deep connection between Front 242 and Chicago, a city that has played a significant role in the band’s international success.

Following the U.S. dates, the tour will extend its international leg, visiting countries like Germany, The Netherlands, Sweden, France, the UK, and Spain, before reaching its poignant conclusion with three final concerts in January 2025, including a grand finale in Front 242’s hometown of Brussels, Belgium, at the Ancienne Belgique (AB) on the 24th and 25th.

Patrick Codenys, Jean-Luc De Meyer, and Richard 23, the core trio behind Front 242’s enduring legacy, shared their mixed emotions about concluding their remarkable journey.

“It is with a heavy mix of emotion that we close this great adventure, some 40 years in the making,” they stated, adding: “We realize that ending our journey at this time, when we are still vibrant and full of energy is how the band should be remembered. We are excited to share these meaningful final performances with our wonderful fans who have been with us through it all.”

The announcement, perfectly timed with International EBM Day, underscores the band’s deep connection to the EBM community and its history. Tickets for this historic tour will be available starting March 1, with more details on the band’s official website.

In a fitting tribute to their storied relationship, WAX TRAX! RECORDS is orchestrating an impressive FRONT 242 / CHICAGO VIP WEEK – Final Fan Experience, celebrating 40 years since the label first introduced Front 242 to the U.S. audience. This week-long homage, from November 11-17, 2024, is a heartfelt farewell to the band, featuring a plethora of events designed to showcase Front 242’s monumental impact on music history.

Fans can look forward to unique opportunities such as a private bus tour of Chicago guided by Richard 23 & Julia Nash, exclusive access to a sound check, and a promotional-only reissue of “Endless Riddance” with an alternate cover. Additional highlights include a FRONT 242 retrospective exhibit, a special screening of the Wax Trax! documentary followed by a Q&A session with the band, access to the CLUB FRONT 242 pop-up bar, and intimate meet-and-greet sessions.

It’s a comprehensive celebration that honors the legacy of Front 242 and their pivotal role in shaping the industrial and EBM genres.

A Look Back at Front 242’s Trailblazing Path

In the annals of electronic music, few names are as synonymous with innovation and influence as Front 242. Their journey began in 1981 in Belgium, a time when the electronic music landscape was ripe for revolution. The band’s founding member, Daniel B., set the tone with the single “Body to Body,” laying a foundation that would soon support an entirely new genre.

The arrival of Patrick Codenys and Jean-Luc De Meyer for the band’s inaugural album, Geography, in 1982, marked the true genesis of Front 242’s iconic sound. With Richard 23 joining in 1983, the group’s lineup solidified, and their collective vision began to crystallize. Front 242 wasn’t just creating music; they were crafting a sonic and visual experience that transcended traditional performance art.

Front 242’s commitment to autonomy in their recording and graphic endeavors allowed them to forge a distinct identity, both sonically and visually. This independence was crucial in cultivating a unique stage presence that captivated audiences across Europe, laying the groundwork for their international acclaim.

The mid-1980s saw Front 242’s sound resonate across the Atlantic, with their signing to Chicago’s Wax Trax! Records marking the beginning of their profound impact on the American music scene. The EP Take One, released in 1984, was the first taste of Front 242 for many U.S. fans, leading to a widespread and fervent following.

As EBM began to spread its electronic tendrils across Europe, Front 242 stood at the forefront, their live performances becoming legendary for their energy and intensity. Albums like No Comment (1985), Official Version (1987), and Front By Front (1988) are considered cornerstones of the genre, with tracks like “Headhunter” and “Welcome to Paradise” becoming anthems of the EBM movement.

The 1990s saw Front 242 pushing their creative boundaries even further with Tyranny For You, Up Evil, and Off. These albums marked a departure from their established sound, incorporating new vocalists, live instruments, and innovative production techniques, courtesy of Andy Wallace. This era signified a willingness to evolve and adapt, ensuring their music remained as dynamic and relevant as ever.

Following a hiatus, Front 242’s return to the stage in the late ’90s, alongside German drummer Tim Kroker, reinvigorated their live presence. This period also saw the release of live albums that captured the essence of their performances, reflecting the band’s continuous evolution and the ever-changing nature of their setlists.

In the early 2000s, with the release of Still & Raw and Pulse, Front 242 revisited the raw, analogue sounds that had initially defined them, now enriched by decades of experience and technological advancements. This return to their roots, coupled with a forward-thinking approach, underscored the band’s enduring appeal and influence.

Front 242’s decision to eschew the traditional album-release-followed-by-tour cycle in recent years speaks to their pioneering spirit. They continue to captivate audiences worldwide, not with the promise of new material, but with the sheer power and integrity of their performances.

As Front 242 embarks on their final tour, they leave behind a legacy that is as much about the future as it is about their storied past. Their contributions to electronic music are indelible, having inspired countless artists and fans across the globe. Front 242’s journey may be coming to an end, but their influence will reverberate for generations to come.

Front 242’s Lasting Impact and Final Farewell

As Front 242 prepares for their final tour, it’s clear that their departure will leave a significant void in the EBM and industrial scenes. However, their decision to end on a high note, while still at the forefront of their artistic powers, is a testament to their integrity and commitment to their fans.

The ‘One Last Time’ tour is not just a farewell; it’s a celebration of a band that has consistently pushed the boundaries of music and live performance. For fans old and new, this tour offers a chance to experience the raw energy and innovative spirit that have defined Front 242 for over four decades.

The legendary Chicago record shop, Wax Trax! Records could become a historic landmark if co-founder Jim Nash’s family gets their wish.

In 1978, Nash and Dannie Flesher sold their Denver shop of the same name and relocated to 2449 North Lincoln Avenue. They founded the music label in 1980. Before launching the independent label, Nash and Flesher would use the North Lincoln Avenue storefront to promote and produce concerts for then-unknown artists such as Joy Division, Bauhaus, The Birthday Party, New Order, Einstürzende Neubauten, The Sisters of Mercy, Divine, and more. WAX TRAX! was responsible for bringing many artists to Chicago for the first time.

“Most tickets sold ran through this iconic building”, says Julia Nash, daughter of Jim.

WAX TRAX! RECORDS is credited for popularizing a new genre called “Industrial Dance,” later shortened as “Industrial.” Ministry, Front 242, My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult, Revolting Cocks, KMFDM, Front Line Assembly, The KLF, Underworld, Coil, Psychic TV, Laibach, and more all got their footing in the U.S. through the label.

Wax Trax! opened its hallowed doors in a building that once housed a funeral parlour. They carried thousands of unique and rare titles in a vast range of genres: dance, soul, R&B, heavy metal, electronic, rockabilly, hardcore, glam, and avant-garde, as well as imports, indie releases, and bootlegs. The store was the center of underground music and culture in the Midwest throughout the 1980s and ’90s, serving as the go-to for music fans and musicians alike.  Wax Trax! was graced by huge stars during their Chicago visits: Robert Plant, Lou Reed, Nick Cave, Black Flag, Buzzcocks, and the B-52s. They remained there until relocating in 1993.

“The store itself was an underground cultural mecca for people from all over the city, statewide and internationally to discover new music (like) punk and electronic,” she told the Chicago Tribune. “At the time they were frowned-upon genres, but they became very important in music culture.” The store’s staff, comprised mainly of musicians and DJs, became a valuable source of expert guidance and tips for cutting-edge and fringe artists, paving the way toward later marketing concepts in similar stores.

Julia Nash, the director of the 2018 documentary Industrial Accident: The Story of Wax Trax! Records, found her “true self” at the store and relocated to Chicago in 1987. From there, she has immersed herself in the rich Wax Trax! legacy. She equates Wax Trax! to iconic Chicago blues label Chess Records, which enjoys landmarked status. Although the genres are different, their importance to music fans is undeniable.

Julia Nash has launched a petition for her late father’s store to be landmarked. The designation will ensure that the building will not be demolished, or the exterior altered. Nearly 5000 people have already signed as of the writing of this article. She hopes to submit a historic landmark application by March 1 to the city’s Department of Planning and Development at its March 15 meeting, a move acknowledging the store and record label’s place in music history.

“If this store or label has meant anything to you at any point in your life, we hope you will join us at preserving this important physical piece of music history,” says Julia Nash.

For more information on the landmarking effort and to sign the petition, visit petitions.com.

For those who loved the Industrial Accident Wax Trax! Records documentary released earlier this year, your cup runneth over! Now, a Kickstarter campaign has been announced for The History of Industrial Music: The Chicago Way, a documentary featuring interviews with Al Jourgensen of Ministry, Revolting Cocks and so many other acts, as well as members of My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult, Die Warzau, Pigface and more.

The new doc, whose title is a play on the line spoken by Sean Connery in the 1987 Crime Drama The Untouchables, takes a deeper and more encompassing look at Chicago’s prominent role in the development of industrial music throughout the 1980s and ’90s.

The film’s producers write on Kickstarter:

“This movie is based in Chicago, but the story is global. Chicago was the epicenter of this style of music that rose from the dirty dancefloors to airwaves of MTV via the groundbreaking show ‘120 Minutes.’ Soon clubs from LA to Berlin were spinning these artists — but how did it start? What was the engine that made it go? What caused this beautiful marriage of dance, rock, disco, synths, aggression and attitude? Why was there a chicken needed in the recording studio for inspiration? (what?!) … It’s a story, with many wild, true, tales that needs to be told.”

After raising their first round of through private funding, the producers explain in the campaign that they’re turning now to crowdfunding via fans of the genre to cover the post-production costs such as music licensing, legal fees, physical production of a Blu-ray release, film festival submissions and more.

Head over to Kickstarter to see all the perks and awards for contributing towards the campaign here.

Some who braved long Record Store Day lines yesterday were able to score tickets to attend a special Ministry’s performance in Chicago last night.

The promise was that the concert would see frontman Al Jourgensen performing material that the infamous Chicago-area industrial music label and record store Wax Trax! had billed as a “Wax Trax!-era” set.

This, the first gig of six scheduled at House of Vans sponsored events in North America saw Jourgensen reunited with former bandmate Chris Connelly, who has been on hand as part of the touring panel for the Industrial Accident: The Story of Wax Trax! Records documentary and its soundtrack, whose screening has been part of the event.

Those who purchased the soundtrack to the documentary on Record Store Day gained entry to a performance where the set was mostly late-’80s, early-’90s Ministry albums, with three songs each from The Land of Rape and Honey, The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste and Psalm 69.

Three songs were featured off each respective album with Connelly contributing vocals to “Burning Inside” and “So What.”

During the encore the band switched over to a track from the Revolting Cocks’ repertoire, performing “No Devotion,” with Connelly once again joining in on vocals, followed by the 1,000 Homo DJs cover of Black Sabbath’s “Supernaut”.

The set closed with the title track of Rape and Honey and the recent acoustic arrangement of “(Every Day Is) Halloween”.

Ministry’s next gig this series of special performances continues in Brooklyn tomorrow, with dates to follow in Toronto, Austin, San Francisco and Los Angeles to follow over the next nine days.

Each evening features a documentary film screening, panel discussion, Q&A, and a performance by Ministry and Cold Cave.

Following their 2017 release New Metal, Multiple Man have returned with a new EP titled High on the Hog. The four track record will be officially released on March 25th via the Berlin-based Fleisch.

The Brisbane, Australia twins Chris and Sean Campion have yet again proven they are well-versed in the EBM spectrum, delivering a unique point of view to the genre. While maintaining its dance floor readiness, High on the Hog‘s tracks maintain a lightness that makes it easy – and addictive – to keep on repeat. While Multiple Man’s sound is unique, the EP has tinges of mid-80s Cabaret Voltaire alongside the quirkiness of Wax Trax! releases such as Acid Horse or PTP.

Post-Punk is excited to premiere the title track from this album, which is, as they say, “an end of history banger for the psycho rollerball time we live in.” Be sure to catch them on tour this spring in both Europe and the US. Dates below.

The documentary film Industrial Accident: The Story of Wax Trax! Records, along with its soundtrack will finally see its release on DVD in April of 2019.

The news came via a email sent to the project’s Kickstarter backers from Julia Nash, the daughter of late Wax Trax! co-founder Jim Nash.

In the message she writes:

“I can report with 100% certainty that we will be releasing both the DVD and the soundtrack in April of 2019. We have officially cleared the last of our commercial licensing hurdles. Just to be crystal clear, this isn’t ‘we’re working on it’ or ‘if everything goes as planned,’ or any other ambiguous language in case we run into obstacles. The soundtrack WILL be released in conjunction with the DVD next April.”

Nash also goes on to mention a Blu-Ray release  and special editions of the film that may feature extended cuts:

“We will be rolling out special editions throughout next year, but the current cut of the film will be available in April.”

No details about the soundtrack exists at this time.
