Lewis Largent, a pivotal figure in the world of alternative music, passed away on February 20, 2023, at the age of 58, following a long illness. He began his career in the mid-1980s as an intern at KROQ, a Los Angeles alternative-radio powerhouse, where he quickly rose through the ranks to become a DJ and music director by 1989. He was then offered a position as the Vice President of Music Programming at MTV in 1992, where he hosted the iconic show “120 Minutes” until 1995, interviewing many influential artists along the way, such as Cocteau Twins, Björk, Juliana Hatfield, Pavement, PJ Harvey, Andrew Eldritch, David Bowie and Trent Reznor, and more.

After leaving MTV, Largent continued to work in the music industry, becoming the Senior Vice President of A&R at Island Def Jam Records until 2004. He also returned to college and earned a BA in creative writing from Sarah Lawrence College in 2011 and an MFA in 2015. His friend and former colleague, Matt Pinfield, expressed his sadness on Facebook, stating that he was “completely gutted” and “at a loss for words.” Doug “Sluggo” Roberts, another former KROQ colleague of Largent’s, recalled how welcoming Largent was when he first joined the station and even personally introduced the debut of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” on air. John Norris, a former MTV News correspondent, also expressed his sorrow on Twitter, stating that Largent was always “cool, chill, humble, and kind.”

Lewis Largent is survived by his wife, Julie Greenwald, who is the CEO of Atlantic Music Group, and their two children.

To remember his contributions to the music scene, fans can watch some classic footage of him on “120 Minutes” below.

Reach out and touch faith! In anticipation of Depeche Mode’s upcoming mammoth 75-date tour for their new album Memento Mori, the synthpop pioneers graced the stage of the famed Ed Sullivan Theatre in a Thursday appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. They performed the lead single, “Ghosts Again,” as well as a web-only performance of the Violator classic, “Personal Jesus.”

Now a duo with supporting musicians, Colbert proudly introduced the band, as Dave Gahan and Martin Gore delivered winners to sinners in sharp suits. Gahan’s emotive performance of Ghosts Again was full of heart, and you could see the band earned a well-deserved standing ovation from the studio audience.  Personal Jesus started with a slowed-down intro until launching into the familiar, stomping tempo.

It’s nice to see Depeche Mode still on top of their game, and a nice glimpse of what to expect on the upcoming tour.

Watch below:

The Memento Mori album marks a new chapter for Depeche Mode’s peerless, evolving legacy. Memento Mori originated early in the pandemic during the chaos of uncertainty and global panic; now the grim title also reflects the sombre reality of a Fletch-less future for the band. The album was produced by James Ford, and Marta Salogni.

Memento Mori will be released on March 24 on double vinyl, CD, cassette, and digital. Check out the full tracklist below.

You can pre-order the album here.

One of the most highly anticipated shows for post-punk and goth fans, The Sandman, just had its trailer unveiled at the Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2022.

Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s DC Comics classic series promises to be a faithful adaptation of the original, starting exactly where the first issue began in 1989. Following decades of imprisonment by mortals who wished to capture his sister Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste), Morpheus (Tom Sturridge), the lord of dreams, finally escapes. Finding himself weak, and the dreamworld in disarray, he embarks on a quest to restore his kingdom and reclaim his power, descending into the depths of hell to play a deadly game with Lucifer (Gwendoline Christie) and then face off against the nightmarish Corinthian.

We are eager to see if all of the Joy Division, Bauhaus, and Cure references from the comics made it into the show, like in issue six, which is named after the Joy Division song “24-Hours”.

Watch the trailer below:

During the panel at Comic-Con, Neil Gaiman also revealed that original Sandman cover artist Dave McKean came out of retirement to design unique end title credits for all ten episodes of the series.

The Sandman’s 10-episode season comes to Netflix on August 5th.

Shocking no one, Morrissey was adamantly NOT at the table for his Sunday Roast, as The Simpsons spoofed The Mancunian expat singer in their latest episode, entitled Panic On The Streets of Springfield (19 April).

In this tome, Lisa discovers Quilloughby (and his band The Snuffs) on a streaming service, and immediately becomes enchanted with “their brand of literate, sardonic music” and his “militant vegetarianism.” She becomes obsessed with the depressed 80s British singer, who bears more than a passing resemblance to the Moz of yore.   Her new imaginary friend teaches her the art of disparaging scorn.

Morrissey has recently faced condemnation after wearing a pin featuring the logo of far-right/anti-Islam political party For Britain during a recent TV appearance, calling Chinese people a “subspecies” due to the country’s track record on animal welfare, asserting that Halal certifiers support ISIS, mocking London mayor Sadiq Khan’s accent, proclaiming borders are necessary for order, and claiming he couldn’t possibly be racist because “everyone ultimately prefers their own race.”

In light of Morrissey’s (well-documented) rhetoric, The Simpsons went right for the jugular: Lisa gets the opportunity to attend a Snuffs reunion concert (stealing Homer’s credit card), only to discover Quilloughby has aged into an ungraceful, racist carnivore. “…I found out veganism was invented by foreigners, for whom there are far too many on this planet,” Quilloughby announces on stage.

The show did not approach Morrissey to voice his cartoon doppelgänger, likely because he previously declined a cameo in Season 15’s The Regina Monologues. Quilloughby was instead voiced by a spot-on, dare we say, gleeful? Benedict Cumberbatch, with music penned by Bret McKenzie (Flight of the Conchords).

Hours after the episode aired, Morrissey’s management snapped back on Facebook.

For the curious, Panic On The Streets of Springfield is currently available on Hulu.

UPDATE: Find Morrissey’s official statement in his own words here.

Thirty-two seasons in, Simpsons writer Tim Long finally confirmed the news on social media. The Simpsons will indeed be doing a send-up to Morrissey on an upcoming show, ostensibly entitled Panic On The Streets of Springfield.

In this episode, Lisa falls under the spell of an aging 80s music superstar, played by…who else? Benedict Cumberbatch. Notably, there will be music featured on the show written by satirist extraordinaire, Flight of the Conchords’ Bret McKenzie. (No stranger to pastiche himself, McKenzie once sent up Bowie with the delightful Bowie’s In Space.)

The official episode description reads, “Lisa gets a new imaginary friend — a depressed British singer from the 1980s; Homer becomes a truck guy.” Will the episode cover Morrissey’s infamous Bigmouth episodes, increasingly “For Britain” leanings, and acid curmudgeonliness? One must admit Stephen’s due for a (vegan) roast.

Long teased the upcoming episode on his Twitter with a poster of Lisa and the Surly One looking suspiciously like the cover art for The Queen Is Dead, complete with caption contest:

Many have wondered what trajectory the life of Wednesday Addams might take. What kind of person would the precocious, deadpan wielder of headless dolls and guillotine play grow into?

Netflix answers these fanciful motions with a new series, simply titled Wednesday, directed by Tim Burton (in his television debut). Written by Smallville creators Al Gough and Miles Millar, the live-action coming of age series will follow Wednesday Addams’s life as a student at Nevermore Academy, where she masters her emerging psychic abilities, thwarts town serial killers, solves a supernatural mystery involving her parents, and navigates tangled relationships.

The Addams Family, created by American cartoonist Charles Addams in 1938, has appeared in print, Addams’s macabre paintings, two live-action TV series; a live-action film franchise, and most recently an animated movie with an upcoming sequel. Breaking away from the family as a unit and focusing on Wednesday is a new development, but a welcome one.

Netflix’s Director of Original Series, Teddy Biaselli, agrees, calling Wednesday the ultimate lone wolf.  “When we first heard Al Gough and Miles Millar’s pitch for Wednesday we were struck, like an arrow from a crossbow, right in our hearts. They nailed the tone, the spirit and the characters, but gave us a fresh way into this story,” he said. “Tim has had a history of telling empowering stories about social outsiders like Edward Scissorhands, Lydia Deetz, and Batman. And now he brings his unique vision to Wednesday and her spooky classmates at Nevermore Academy.”

Gough and Miller are no strangers themselves to the backstories of beloved characters. Like Superman, Wednesday Addams has her own mystique, cult following, and complex personality. Using her intriguing character as a launchpad of inspiration is a stroke of genius.

Looking forward to it.

Before his debut as Paul Atreides in Denis Villeneuve’s forthcoming adaptation of Dune, Timothée Chalamet has been cast as Edgar Scissorhands, son of the titular Edward Scissorhands, from the classic 1990 Tim Burton gothic fairy tale about trying to fit in as an outsider in the confines of idyllic suburbia.

In the commercial for the All-Electric Cadillac Lyric, Winona Ryder reprises her role as Kim Boggs, Edward’s love interest in the original movie, and mother of the Chalamet’s Edgar.

But whereas the cult classic film sees Kim as an old woman recounting the tale of her ill-fated romance with the shock-headed Edward to her grandchild, this short film imagines Kim raising their son.

Like his father, whose heart is made of a cookie courtesy of his creator Vincent Price, Edgar grapples with the difficulties of having scissors for hands. During the course of a frustrating day, Edgar accidentally snips the cord to request a stop while riding a bus, gets magnets stuck to his hands during science class, and punctures and deflates a football. When he tries to utilize his talents at charcuterie while working at a deli, his manager admonishes him to just “stick to the menu”.

With another day in his routine, flummoxed by missing the bus yet again,  Edgar dreams of instead driving a car using a VR headset. When Kim sees this, she decides to bring to life the old idiom, “Look mom, no hands”, and surprises Edgar with a car with hands-free driving capabilities.

As opposed to the bittersweet ending in the film where within the garden at his Gothic Mansion, his father Edward would blanket the town in snowfall with the carving of his ice sculptures, the commercial ends with Ryder’s narration, stating that “Edgar drove off into the sunset”, but made it home in time for a warm dinner.

If you’re a fan of Netflix’s German-language sci-fi drama Dark, do we have a treat for you. Star Jakob Diehl has teamed up with percussionist Sven Pollkötte, to unveil the video for there is. This single is the first glimpse at their project TAUMEL’s debut album, there is no time to run away from here.

The single and accompanying video is fragmented, surreal, and mysterious – a cinematic flair with an unsettling psychedelic twist. It brings to mind arthouse horror; the breathless pause in a film as suspense builds.

Diehl works as a freelance composer and actor. In addition to his own passions, he composes for radio, theatre, and film, and works as a voice performer. He has also acted in radio plays, theatre, TV, and international film productions such as Dark, Counterpart, Paradise, Il Pecatto, and Der Baader Meinhof Komplex. Sven Pollkötter (Assignment, Alternative Allstars, Clause Grabke) is a classically-trained freelance percussionist and drummer who went onto play neo-classical and improvisation, jazz, and various forms of folk.

Sven Pollkötter and Jakob Diehl first met a decade ago during a musical production at the Funkhaus Berlin. They quickly hit it off and forged a friendship when they discovered they were the same age and left school the same year to pursue a career in music and the arts. Jakob composed and Sven played percussion in the 13-piece instrumental ensemble that recorded the music for the radioplay Die Nacht aus Blei (The Night of Lead) by Hans Henny-Jahnn. The music was slow, sluggish, and gloomy – the story itself, dark and depressive, similar to the Netflix series Dark – in which Jakob was to act years later.

After years of creating music and collaborating, the two started TAUMEL in 2016 out of a desire to turn music into dialogue beyond limits or taboos. Sven and Jakob consider their first years an “experimental and developmental phase.” The timing of this album release and the start of the Netflix series Dark 3 is pure coincidence; TAUMEL’s atmospheric instrumental sounds permeated their music long before the series, but until now Diehl’s film schedule conflicted with any headway on release.

Given Sven’s and Jakob’s broad backgrounds, TAUMEL is musically diverse. Their first album embraced a jazzy, slow minimalist instrumental sound through a quartet of piano/Rhodes, guitar, flugelhorn, and drums. The compositions are full of contrasts and breaks, with special attention to storytelling; the band identifies their music as “Doomjazz” or “Darkjazz.” The individual tracks comprising there is no time to run away from here  represent the first portion of a musical series called TRAUM (dream).
