Descending into the neon-lit corridors of Toronto’s underground scene, Robert Alfons, famously known as TR/ST and formerly as Trust, emerged in 2010 like a suave glitch in the matrix. His unique brand of dark electronic pop defied the norm, rapidly evolving into a cult favorite. This musical maestro blends somber beats with a mystique that gives you just a taste of his unique sound.

As TR/ST soared past a flurry of global tours and relocated to the picturesque Los Angeles, the project transcended its original identity, becoming an institution in dark dance music. Alfons added ‘Joyland’ (2014) and the formidable ‘The Destroyer Parts 1 & 2’ (2019) to his repertoire, riding the waves of the music industry with a masterful touch.

Now, in a significant move, TR/ST has joined forces with Dais Records. Marking this partnership is the release of the dynamic single “Robrash,” a much-awaited treat for fans since his last release in 2019. This track is an electronic odyssey, with buzzing synth basslines and mechanized vocals, crowned by a hook that lingers long after the music stops.

Blare this anthem loud.

Co-produced with the enigmatic Nightfeelings and mixed by the legendary Nick Launay, Robrash points to TR/ST’s electrifying future in 2024. Available now, along with its instrumental version, it’s a hint of the exciting, heart-pounding tunes ahead. The TR/ST journey is embarking on a new sonic chapter, and it’s not to be missed.

Catch TR/ST at Cruel World Festival on May 11 in Pasadena.

In a move that is equal parts nostalgic and forward-thinking, Los Angeles-based label Dais Records is joining forces with analog revivalists Retrospekt to unveil a limited-edition marvel: the CP-81 portable cassette player. This chic white, rose-embellished beauty offers an auditory experience and an exclusive 19-track compilation cassette, 223, teeming with unreleased tracks from Dais’ eclectic artist roster.

This vintage delight will hit the stores on December 8, 2023. For the enthusiasts waiting with bated breath, you can pre-order it now.

A Look into the Past with a Modern Lens

Dais Records, the bastion of sonic innovation and visual prowess, has always celebrated the rich tapestry of music’s past while pushing its boundaries. It’s no wonder, then that this collaboration with Retrospekt feels so apt. With Retrospekt’s mission of “Reviving retro tech for a new generation,” the two giants seem to be in harmony.

Dais co-founders Gibby Miller and Ryan Martin wax poetic about the days when the tactile pleasure of cassettes reigned supreme. For them, the cassette isn’t a relic but a timeless piece.

Martin is adamant about the format’s enduring potency:

“Cassettes aren’t nostalgic, they’re relevant. Making a mix tape for a friend or love interest is a talismanic offering. It’s a reaching out, a sharing of discovery.”

For Miller, too, cassette culture was seismic; he continues to see singular strengths in the limitations of older technologies:

“Having a device solely dedicated to music may seem unique to a person today, but there’s also a purity in it. The ritual of hitting play. Feeling the hum of the machine. Flipping at the end of the side. Tapes changed everything for me.”

Retrospekt’s journey, spearheaded by Adam and Kori Fuerst, echoes this sentiment. Starting with refurbishing vintage cameras, they expanded their offerings to include tape players, Game Boys, and other nostalgic tech wonders.

“These vintage machines aren’t obsolete – they still provide pleasure and enjoyment,” says Adam. “More and more people today realize this, and they want to have an organic, intentional experience without their metadata being tracked by some corporation.”

The Craft Behind the Cassette Player

Nathaniel Young, Dais’ in-house creative maven, has meticulously redesigned the CP-81, ensuring that both the player and packaging exude a touch of minimalist elegance. This edition is bundled with Dais headphones, ensuring that listeners experience the compilation tape, C23, in all its glory.

Features: Play, Fast-Forward, Rewind, Record, Microphone Jack, Headphone Jack, USB Power Supply (Type-C), Battery Operable. Contents: Cassette Player, 223 Cassette, 2x AA Batteries, Dais Headphones, User Guide.

The C23 compilation pays homage to the legendary UK indie tape collection C86, and boasts unreleased tracks from artists such as High Vis, RIKI, and Drew McDowall.

In the vast landscape of modern music, few albums have captured the essence of bittersweet nostalgia and beautiful melancholia as poignantly as Choir Boy’s Passive With Desire. Initially released in 2017, this ethereal opus is a masterclass in dreamy synthpop and post-punk, laced with a touch of retro reverie. The album, which played a pivotal role in the band’s signing to Dais Records, is now being reissued, allowing a new generation of listeners to experience its magic.

Choir Boy, led by the enigmatic talent of Adam Klopp, emerged in 2016 with a sound that felt both fresh and deeply rooted in the past. Klopp’s vocals, often compared to the likes of Billy Mackenzie and Jimmy Sommerville, carry a melancholic weight akin to The Cure’s Disintegration era. Yet, beneath the surface of these tracks lies a bittersweet nostalgia for childhood and Halloween, evident in Passive With Desire’s thematic undercurrents.

One of the standout qualities of Choir Boy are their ability to elevate the mundane and the profane to the realm of the divine. The band’s artistry lies not just in their ethereal soundscapes but also in their lyrical prowess. They weave tales that touch upon the everyday experiences, from the sensual to the vulgar, and elevate them to a spiritual echelon. It’s this juxtaposition of the earthly and the ethereal that gives their music its unique character, making it resonate deeply with listeners.

The album commences with “Two Lips,” which bathes the listener in a burst of warm nostalgia, evoking melodies reminiscent of days long past. This is followed by “Angel Dog,” a track that transitions into an effervescent daydream, capturing the fleeting nature of memories and wistfully envying the purity of a nearby canine friend. “Leave Me Be” stands as a hauntingly beautiful song at the crossroads of love and heartbreak, encapsulating the essence of those bittersweet moments we’ve all experienced.

“I Feel How the Snow Falls” evokes the serene beauty of a snow-covered landscape, serving as a tearful ode to Christmases that have come and gone. “Blood Moon” is a cinematic retro 80s pop anthem that delves into the vampiric dreams of youth. The track is rich with imagery, from a child’s Dracula costume to the innocence and allure of Halloween. “Sanitorium” is a mournful dirge adorned with horns that seamlessly transitions into the post-punk guitars and reverb of the title track “Passive With Desire,” capturing the very essence of beautiful despondency.

“Hellmouth,” a fan favorite, continues the themes introduced in “Blood Moon.” It paints a melancholic picture augmented by retro synths and somber backing vocals, delving deeper into the vampire theme with references to the iconic widow-peaked Dracula visage and the memory of a mother assisting in the application of childhood Halloween makeup. The album concludes with “Dark Room,” a heart-wrenching track that begins with acoustic guitars and culminates in an overwhelming embrace of melancholia.

After the release of Passive With Desire, the band teetered on the brink of dissolution. It was a tumultuous period that saw them venturing into a side project, Human Leather. However, the magnetic pull of Passive With Desire was undeniable. The album, with its evocative tracks, paints a vivid picture of soft clouds bathed in hues of pink and orange against the backdrop of a setting sun. It’s songs explore the winding path of memory, filled with moments of joy and sorrow. And when the storms of life rage on, we can seek solace in the simple things, and through music we can, much like spiders, find refuge nestled gently in our gossamer webs.

Listen to “Passive With Desire” below:

Klopp’s journey, from hours spent in Mormon sanctuaries to the raw energy of DIY punk venues, has been one of duality. His experiences, both spiritual and rebellious, culminated in his departure from a religious mission in Tahiti, leading to the creation of Passive With Desire. The album birthed at Studio Studio Dada, began as intimate bedroom drafts, evolving into a full-fledged musical experience with the addition of a full band, sophisticated instrumentation, and nostalgic samples.

Engineered by Klopp, alongside Bret Meisenbach and Stephen Cope, Passive With Desire stands as a testament to Choir Boy’s unique style. It’s a collection that speaks of longing, transformation, and the human urge for discovery.

For those eager to experience this masterpiece on an assortment of coloured vinyl, pre-orders are available through Dais Records.

THE SPATIAL DIVIDE OF THE SKIN AND THE GLOVE

IS THE SAME AS THE RIDE FROM BELOW TO ABOVE

Drab Majesty, the post-punk and darkwave endeavour of Deb Demure and Mona D., recently rekindled our fascination with the essence of existence. Their creative spark was reignited last month through “Vanity,” a collaboration with Slowdive’s Rachel Goswell. Today, they introduce a six-minute journey into the psyche: “The Skin and the Glove,” an unbound pop tune pulsing with Madchester and Dream Pop influences. This new melody adds another layer to the formation of their mini-album, An Object in Motion, set for an August 25th release via Dais Records.

The track is a sparkling example of gossamer and multifaceted psychedelic shoegaze. The ethereal jangle beat pays a beautiful homage to the spirit of the Stone Roses, Primal Scream, and The Veldt, and the interplay between the dreamy delivery of Mona D and monotone sonorous monotone vocals from Deb in the chorus brings the metaphysical lyrics a unique, hypnotic gravitas.

Influenced by the relentless progression of time echoed in the song’s lyrics, the duo chose an artistic medium that captures the mosaic nature of memory for the song’s visual representation. The Super 8mm camera, a tool that seems to edit time itself, was used to seize snapshot vignettes from the band’s personal and emotional moments of touring life collected from around the globe. The act of transitioning through moments, pressing the camera’s button, and selecting which fragments of a day, an expedition, or a long-term journey to commit to memory resulted in a montage of carefully curated, yet beautifully fragmented memories.

Watch the video below:

In the heart of Los Angeles, Andrew Clinco unveiled an intriguing musical brainchild, Drab Majesty in 2011. Best recognized for commanding the drum set in the band Marriages, Clinco immersed himself into this endeavor, assuming the genderfluid role of Deb Demure. As the project took shape, Mona D (born Alex Nicolaou), a gifted keyboardist and vocalist, joined the group in 2016, introducing an extra layer of complexity to their sound.

Since partnering with the forward-thinking Dais Records, Drab Majesty has spawned three thought-provoking albums: their hauntingly beautiful debut, Careless (2015), the introspective journey of The Demonstration (2017), and the evocative Modern Mirror (2019).

An Object In Motion was written during a 2021 retreat to the remote coastal Oregon town of Yachats, where Deb Demure leaned into the neo-psychedelic resonance of a uniquely bowl-shaped 12-string Ovation acoustic/electric guitar. After early morning hikes in the rain, Deb would record ambient guitar experiments the rest of the day, tapping into “flow states,” letting the sound lead the way. These sessions were then refined or recreated, and later elevated further with key collaborations by Rachel Goswell (Slowdive), Justin Meldal-Johnson (Beck, M83, Air), and Ben Greenberg (Uniform, Circular Ruin Studio).

An Object In Motion is true to its title, capturing the chrysalis moment of an artist evolving, reborn and untethered, silhouetted against an open horizon. It presents a showcase of potential futures from Drab’s evolving domain, their sound poised to bloom at the precipice of transformation.

An Object in Motion will be released on August 25th via Dais. Pre-order here.

Drab Majesty has also disclosed their European tour dates for the coming autumn and a scheduled performance at the Darker Waves Festival in Southern California. “Time is dysphoric. The dream breaks down. Everyone’s beginning to panic, but in the end, something will come from it.”

From the scorching desert of Arizona, synthpop duo Body of Light return with the announcement of a brand new album Bitter Reflection, and the record’s captivating and melodic first single, “Never Ever.”

With fervor and wonder, the Jarson brothers have plunged headlong into the abyss of their personal arcana, revealing cherished memories and parts of themselves concealed from the world’s gaze: childhood tapes, home movies, and forsaken demos. Forever peering within themselves and the question: “How can we make this grow?”

From the bank of these hazy memories comes an audio collage spanning decades, masterfully crafted by the Jarson brothers. And amid this symphony of wistful longings, the single “Never Ever” hits every sweet spot, augmented by a somber and romantic sax solo that invokes visions of a sun-kissed beach at dusk. We detect hints of Thomas Dolby, a touch of Art of Noise, and the Depeche Mode-inspired melancholy of “Not Tonight,” interwoven with echoes of the greatest 80s pop ballads from the film soundtracks of the era. But above all, we sense the poignant yearning of regrets, fleeting thoughts, and wistful nostalgia. Here, the Jarson brothers serve a divine platter of sonic comfort food, a feast that delivers both epiphanies and the wisdom of growth, with echoes of remembrance lingering on the palate.

“This is music pulled between twin flames of truth and desire, romanticization and reality, catharsis and control, born of a bond sealed by years, dreams, and blood,” says the band.

A new age demands new waves, and Body Of Light is leading the charge of a resurgent generation that fuses modern methods with the sounds of the future’s past. Singer Alex Jarson sees their muse clearly, at the axis of anguished transition, temporal collapse, and, just possibly, the brink of hope:

“Time is dysphoric. The dream breaks down. Everyone’s beginning to panic, but in the end something will come from it.”

Listen below:

Working with Telefon Tel Aviv’s Josh Eustis in Los Angeles, Body Of Light incorporated an expanded array of live instrumentation – piano, bass, saxophone, acoustic guitar – in addition to vintage Akai samplers, Moogs, and archaic hardware to their fourth album, Bitter Reflection, giving it a lush, eclectic, and unpredictable array of warm melody and sounds.

Bitter Reflection will be released on June 30, 2023, via Dais Records. Pre-orders are available here, and more music and news from Body Of Light will arrive soon.

Body Of Light Live Dates:

British post-punkers High Vis pen political lyrics that tackle the challenges of everyday life. Straddling aggression with art, frontman Graham Sayle’s authentic punk sentiments are rooted in poverty, working-class identity in British society, and pure trauma. Their anthemic songs address the downtrodden, discarded communities across the UK, with a core Madchester sound blended with the raw intensity of Fugazi and Killing Joke. “Trauma Bonds” hits the sweet spot of hardcore sentiments with softer edges; their poetry is a phoenix soaring out of the ashes of tragedy.

High Vis has released a moving new video for the single “Trauma Bonds,” off their second LP Blending (Dais Records). For Trauma Bonds, Sayle refocuses his unrelenting social consciousness through the lens of his own emotional landscape; creating a track that feels more universal…and hopeful for change. The cinema verité-style video, filmed and directed by Jonah West over the course of a year, is an emotionally charged portrait of Jamz and Sean: two people negotiating the world whilst living in the shadow of trauma.

“The video is dedicated to everyone carrying the weight of grief for those taken too soon, and those struggling with their own existence,” says Sayles. “When you’re going through hell, keep going.”

Watch the video for ‘Trauma Bonds” below:

After years of anticipation, High Vis are finally set to tour North America for the first time ever, just after their sold-out EU / UK run. Cabaret Voltaire co-founder Stephen Mallinder delves into his signature sound of minimal synth, oblique wordplay, and “wonky disco” with a sensuous new single, “Shock To The Body,” out now via Dais Records.

Mallinder’s latest single highlights his lauded place in the pantheon of electronic music while bridging the gap between Kraftwerk and The Downward Spiral-era Nine Inch Nails. The buoyant and funky track embraces a robotic industrial-meets-techno state, peppered with eerie circuits, synth noodlings, lack of reverb, and hypnotic beats. The palette of modular electronics and stereo strings is meant to channel the “temporal malaise of lockdown” with ambiguity and plasticity.

“Rhythm is the default, the bedrock, the building block – even the melodies are rhythmic….Music should draw you in; lyrics should make you think. Most interpretation is misinterpretation,” says Mallinder.

Mallinder revels in the uncertainty of interpretation of the cryptic, minimal lyrics.  “This is music of countdowns and comedowns, fleeting pleasures and opaque futures, observing the great decline while dancing on its ashes. Flux is deathless and forever; the rest, illusion.”

Recorded at MemeTune Studios in Cornwall with frequent collaborator Benge (aka Ben Edwards), “Shock To The Body” will certainly get into your nervous system and rewire your circuitry.

The music video was created frame by frame by Tulipomania and includes stop-motion objects and collages on thousands of individual sheets of black paper. The effect works beautifully with the hypnotic nature of the song, and its artistic throwback approach to animation brings to mind the work of Terry Gilliam.

So here it comes These are sounds of love

Up ahead and high above

They’ll call

For a sliver of you

Los Angeles post-punk outfit Cold Showers are back with a mesmerizing new track and video for “Sliver”—a moody exploration of the self, grief, loss, and pain, with a dark synth essence. The song is a modern take on the late 80s world of electronic-driven guitar offerings, blending the expansive hook-driven pop of more mainstream bands like Simple Minds with the romantic introspection of Manchester mainstays such as The Happy Mondays and New Order, as well as The Chameleons, and Echo & The Bunnymen.

The song is illustrated beautifully with a cinematic video, directed by Jamie Parkhurst and Dominic Haydn of Rawle Process Visual Studio. A woman is seen in various forms of solitude – reverie in a car, out in nature, in the mind – and it appears that she is being pursued by an ominous force unseen. A melange of possible metaphors can be gleaned from this captivating dream, such as allusions to addiction, trauma, heartache, societal pressures, or even existing while female; no matter the interpretation, the mysterious sequence is sure to haunt you.

Watch the video for “Sliver” below:

The song is featured on the five-track EP Strength In Numberswhich was recorded during October of 2020 in the wilderness of Joshua Tree: Cold Showers singer Jonathan Weil sought solace from the pandemic chaos of city life. Assembling a makeshift studio, the band collaborated in an ego-free zone with the mantra, “Best idea wins.” Guitarist Chris King credits the experience in giving the album’s songs a new kind of independence. “The world seemed so bleak that making something lighter felt right.” Strength in Numbers refers to this creative process, with each song crafted to be more than the sum of its parts.

Tickets are on sale for the September 20th release show at Zebulon with Fearing, Cold Gawd, Blacklight, and DJs Kerosene and Ayejames.

Bipolar disorder becomes a muse for a raw, vulnerable new track from Kennedy Ashlyn, aka SRSQ. Ashlyn’s unique songwriting turns her private struggles and sorrows into stirring, redemptive anthems. Her multi-octave range embodies tempest and triumph, the darkest nights breaking into brightest dawns, proving her a musician of elemental force: the delicate, forlorn “Abyss” (from her upcoming album Ever Crashing) is no exception.

The accompanying self-directed video (with cinematography by frequent collaborator Leigh Violet) depicts her submerged in water. It’s an intense metaphor for the struggles of mental illness, both in the personal experience and that of the collective, working in tandem. Ever Crashing began materializing in the wake of an ADHD and bipolar disorder diagnosis, prompting a profound personal overhaul, using songwriting to exorcise tumultuous emotions. Ever Crashing refers to Ashlyn’s recurring sensation of being trapped in the crest of a wave, turned and churned in the surf, mirroring the cycles of self-flagellation and surrender that she battles. Music becomes, instead, a form of energetic transmutation and exquisite catharsis. Ashlyn’s dreamy vocals hover somewhere in the ether between Kate Bush and Julee Cruise, or Weyes Blood and Zola Jesus.

“Abyss describes my darkest days with the imagery of my skinless body trapped in a riptide, its rawness exacerbated by the rushing saltwater,” she says. “Suspended above is a glowing orb, the promise of peace, growing fainter and fainter as the tide pulls me down. I watch it disappear in yearning surrender, only to be resurrected by the powerful shine of the sun, which cuts through the water at random, allowing me to ascend if only for a short time. The video was shot almost entirely underwater using a homemade periscope.”

Ever Crashing. produced by Chris Coady (Beach House, Xeno & Oaklander, Slowdive, Zola Jesus)  comes out August 19th via Dais Records on vinyl and across all digital platforms.
