Night Sins, the Philadelphia-based project steered by the charismatic Kyle Kimball, has dropped a new video for “The Lowest Places You’ll Go.” This track melds the driving force of classic EBM with the introspective depth of post-punk and the melodic hooks of synth-pop. Echoing the raw energy of early Nine Inch Nails and the dark, emotive pull of Depeche Mode, the song also tips its hat to the electronic fervor of the ’80s, channeling the likes of Front 242 and A Split Second, with a nod to the funky pioneering sounds of Wax Trax’s late 80s roster.

Kimball’s vocal prowess shines brightly, infusing the track with a captivating presence that demands attention. The video is a powerful yet simple visual narrative that strips away the unnecessary, focusing on Kimball in a raw, unguarded state. Shot in a classic 4:3 format, it shows him at a table, the scene set starkly with a broken wine bottle. In a moment of intense vulnerability, Kimball drinks from the jagged edge, the act leaving him bleeding from the mouth—a potent and distressing image that resonates deeply.

This scene vividly recalls the visceral performances of Nivek Ogre from Skinny Puppy, known for his immersive and often jarring stage personas that blend the boundaries between art and reality. Like Ogre’s memorable enactments, Kimball’s self-inflicted wound here is more than shock value; it’s a metaphor for the pain and catharsis embedded in “The Lowest Places You’ll Go,” highlighting the track’s exploration of personal depths and the struggle for self-acceptance.

The song and its video serve as a reminder that our darkest moments do not define our entire existence, As Kimball explains:

“The Lowest Places You’ll Go is a reminder that you are not who you are at your worst. It’s a reminder that everyone has value and is worthy of love. No one should be paralyzed by fear.  Move with it and through it. Break away.”

Watch the video for “The Lowest Places You’ll Go” below:

Emerging from the shadow-laden streets of Philadelphia, Night Sins has been a dark beacon since the early 2010s, weaving a path that follows in the wake of the legacies carved out by The Sisters of Mercy, Clan of Xymox, and other darkwave pioneers. Their sound—a mix of robust rhythms, atmospheric synths, and Kimball’s distinctive vocals—crafts an immersive world that’s both nostalgic and distinctly fresh.

With “The Lowest Places You’ll Go” setting the tone, Night Sins’ forthcoming five-track EP “A Silver Blade in the Shadow” is shaping up to be a definitive statement of their craft. This mini-album, due out May 17th on Born Losers Records, seems poised to reinforce the band’s standing in the dark music sphere, showcasing the distinctive blend of sound and raw edge that they bring to the table.

“Nothing is sacred, everything bleeds.”

Emanating from the depths of Philadelphia’s thriving DIY music scene, the self-proclaimed “goblin punk” trio FRIEND unveils their third album, boldly titled DOG EAT DOG. Drawing inspiration from the gritty post-punk and post-rock landscape of the late 90s through the early 2010s, FRIEND weaves together their musical influences, handpicked from the favorites of the band itself, which include The Drums, Bloc Party, Mike Krol, Joy Division, Arctic Monkeys, The White Stripes, and IDLES.

In a nod to its inspirations from the realms of The Garden, The Prodigy, Death Grips, and Nine Inch Nails, their latest single NOTHING IS SACRED, EVERYTHING BLEEDS stands as a stark reminder that regardless of what you hold dear, be it a deity or an ideology, it all culminates in the same inevitable outcome – a world where everything ultimately converges, blends…and bleeds.

NOTHING IS SACRED, EVERYTHING BLEEDS pulses with raw energy and sheer exhilaration, driven by thunderous beats and distorted synths that explode into thrills and frenzy. The unrelenting vocals and relentless repetition only amplify the sense of urgency, making this track an absolute must for those high-octane dance floors where the atmosphere crackles with electrifying intensity.

Listen below:

In DOG EAT DOG, the band seamlessly melds their signature blown-out and distorted sound with a poignant, reverberating sense of nostalgia. The result is a captivating fusion, where the band’s characteristic energy collides with a hauntingly melancholic yearning for days past. This album transports us smack i  the crossroads of punk’s raw vitality and the screeching echoes of a bygone era.

DOG EAT DOG is out on the 2nd of February via Born Losers Records. (Dare we say – DOG EAT DOG sounds best blasting through a subwoofer?) This is FRIEND’s first release with the Philly label. You can pre-order the vinyl here.

Matt Messore, the creative force behind Orlando’s Cathedral Bells, unveils “Give Up The Ghost,” the latest standout track from his solo dream pop project, Midi Memory. This song is a cornerstone reverie, culled from the phantasmagoria of his forthcoming new album, “Far Gone and Out.” Messore, with the ethereal grace of Midi Memory, continues his exploration and expansion into the dreamy, ethereal realms of that sound that blurs the margins of post-punk, shoegaze, and synth-pop. “Give Up The Ghost” exemplifies this new direction, marking a captivating addition to the album and an intriguing evolution in Messore’s artistry.

In this new wistful composition, Messore skillfully employs the warm and rich textures of analogue synthesizers to create an atmosphere that is both resonant and nostalgic. The pulsating drum patterns add rhythmic complexity, blending luminous melodies with shadowy undertones. This contrast creates a captivating duality within the track, balancing starkness and intrigue.

The track opens with a haunting, analogue synth intro reminiscent of OMD’s atmospheric style. This nostalgic tone is further enhanced by minimalist, catchy drum patterns characteristic of contemporaries such as, say, Black Marble, grounding the ethereal synths in a post-punk sensibility. The vocals are echoing and resonant, tinged with melancholy, and the lyrics are introspective and poetic. The production balances clarity with warmth, maintaining a modern sound while paying homage to the early days of the genres it draws from.

Listen to “Give Up The Ghost” below:

Messore’s venture with Midi Memory represents a new chapter in his artistry, one that explores the depths of different genres while maintaining a distinctive, cohesive sound. His approach reflects a fusion of modern electronic music with a nod to classic tones and styles, offering listeners a rich, multi-layered auditory journey.

“Far Gone and Out” is set to be released on January 11, 2024, via Born Losers Records. Be sure to follow Midi Memory’s journey on Spotify, Bandcamp, and Instagram, and immerse yourself in the evolving world of dream pop as envisioned by Matt Messore.

Whats done is done
nothing you can do about it

In life, there’s no magic “undo” button to correct our mistakes, no control or command + Z shortcut for the days when our souls feel as bleak as the dreary Sad Mac icon of a malfunctioning vintage Apple Computer. And we can’t go back in time and change the course of a relationship that has already ended in heartbreak. It’s a sentiment that Catherine Moan channels eloquently in her ethereal new track, allowing us to revel in the bittersweet realization of our irreversible moments.

Riding the electric currents of modern synth, Catherine Moan’s freshest offering, Undo Undo, resonates with a fervor that’s near palpable. With its bass as the hypnotic anchor, the song unveils a dreamscape. The vocal threads weave between bright crescendos and shadowy, cavernous echoes, crafting an allure that’s undeniably magnetic.

Every track of Catherine’s feels like an effervescent crossing of worlds – between the known and the mysterious, the bright and the enigmatic. And just as the tension reaches its zenith, a transformation unfolds: glistening synth notes rain down, juxtaposed with razor-sharp drumbeats, painting an anthem that’s both unsettling and deeply moving.

The accompanying visual journey transports us to an 80s greenscreen realm, vintage CRT dreamscapes, all interspersed with glimpses of brain scans, tech, and medical tools, and dismal phrases like “cried.” Is this Catherine’s nod to Pee Wee’s Magic Screen? Dive in and decide:

As the brainchild of the prodigious Angel Jefferson, Catherine Moan stitches the past and present, delivering synth-laden electro-pop that channels the iconic vibes of Madonna, Depeche Mode, and New Order. Bursting onto the scene with a soulful reinterpretation of Depeche Mode’s “Fools,” she soon drew the gaze of Philadelphia’s Born Losers Records. Her LA move and subsequent partnership with producer Trey Frye (Korine) marked the birth of her flagship album, Chain Reaction, with standouts like Drop It! reflecting her unique blend of rhythmic energy and heartfelt introspection.

Catherine’s artistic trajectory took a dynamic turn with “Soda Pop,” trading the gentle 80s whispers for a vivacious dance between electroclash and modern pop. As accolades flowed in, she graced stages from the US coasts to Europe, including a standout performance at SXSW. Her collaborative track “My Heart” with Primer only further solidified her multifaceted musical prowess.

Catherine Moan Live:

  • October 27, 2023: Denver, Colorado, at The Rickhouse with Empathy Test and Nite
  • October 29, 2023 (Sunday): Portland, Oregon, at Coffin Club PDX with Empathy Test and Nite
  • November 3, 2023: Los Angeles, California at Catch One with Empathy Test and Nite

Hailing from the citrusy streets of Orlando, Matt Messore, known for his work as the carillonneur of Cathedral Bells, ushers us into the latest chapter of his sonic narrative with his project: Midi Memory. Venturing deep into the enigmatic world of darkwave and intertwining with the mesmerizing charm of synth-driven dream-pop, he crafts an atmosphere with the warm richness of Roland’s analogue synths and pulsating drum patterns. His tracks meld luminous with shadowy tones, capturing a stark yet intriguing contrast.

In an ironic twist, Midi Memory’s “Angel of Death” (now available via Born Losers Records) presents itself as a track that’s aurally the antithesis of grim, at least upon first listen. Its deceptively cheerful guitar strings and upbeat tempo might mislead a fleeting listener. However, beneath the surface, the song delves into existential turmoil. What at first seemed joyful now falls away like autumn leaves, leaving something beautiful, yet bittersweet.

This song isn’t just a jangly dream pop tune; it’s a poetic juxtaposition. While its exterior gleams with a carefree aura, the lyrics inside harbor haunting musings reminiscent of midnight introspections. Rather than falling in line with the usual brooding darkwave tones of today, it shines as a beacon of hope breaking through a soul’s darkest hour. It’s a song where nostalgia and modernity dance gracefully, even when confronting the theme of mortality. So, while it might make you tap your foot, be prepared: your soul will be stirred.

Let yourself be lulled by the reaper with the karaoke video for “Angel of Death” below:

Midi Memory channels a unique blend of post-punk, echoing the timeless essence of icons like Black Marble, Molchat Doma, and OMD. Yet, this project carves its niche, spinning tales wrapped in dreamy, otherworldly sounds.

The band’s upcoming album, Far Gone and Out, will be released on January 11th, 2024, via Born Losers Records.

In the electric universe of Johnny Dynamite, charisma is just the tip of the iceberg. Beyond the compelling face lies a poet with a penchant for the profound, a lyricist whose words dance in shadow and light. His voice, dripping with melancholy and raw angst, unveils the soul of a deep thinker, caught in the lingering glow of his musical musings.

Enter “Feeding The Nite”, the latest installment of Johnny Dynamite’s evocative series, The Tale of Tommy Gunn, set to hit shelves on September 8th via Born Losers Records. With his characteristic flair, Dynamite delves once more into a wry retelling of classic dream-chaser tales, punctuated with his trademark satirical zest.

Meet Tommy, a disillusioned New Yorker whose eyes are set on the bright lights and glittering promises of Nashville’s legendary music scene. But it’s not all guitars and stardust. The story gets a sultry twist when Valentine enters the frame. As a mystic wanderer with a purpose, she aligns herself with Tommy’s quest, finding solace together in a lakeside haven near the heart of country music.

Yet, in the ever-twisting plot, an offer too good to resist emerges. A local studio entices Tommy with a golden ticket, but as the ink dries, the shadows lengthen. Behind the studio’s inviting façade lurks a nefarious underworld operation, using artists like Tommy to launder their ill-gotten gains. The weight of debt and deception strains the newfound bond between Tommy and Valentine, climaxing in a haunting and heartrending departure.

Every compelling tale deserves its visual odyssey, and this one comes alive under the deft hand of director Jaxon Duron. Through Duron’s lens, we step into the shoes of Tommy Gunn, just as he wraps up his anthem, “Feeding the Nite.” But the glamour of the final note is short-lived, for Tommy’s pockets mirror a bleak ballad.

Drawn to the allure of Printer’s Alley, Tommy’s wandering is met with the jeers of cowboys and the sneers of nightlife regulars. Yet, amidst the haze of neon lights and echoing laughter, a more sinister presence looms. A shadow from the studio, a reminder of the gang’s lurking omnipresence, starts tailing Tommy, thickening the plot and heightening the tension in Duron’s cinematic portrayal.

With a certain abandon, Tommy whirls through the scenes, each step infused with memories of the elusive Valentine. Fate catches up in the shadowy embrace of a hidden alley. There, a determined gang member, cold steel in hand, confronts him. Without defiance, almost in surrender, Tommy strikes a pose reminiscent of a crucifix, absorbing the gunshot’s deafening echo before crumpling to the ground.

But death, it seems, isn’t the finale for Tommy. He awakens amid an enigmatic entourage – a motley crew adorned in black and shields of sunglasses. Dazed but undeterred, Tommy finds himself on Broadway’s pulsing heart. The circumstances of his resurrection, be it liminal space, celestial realm, or a mind’s construct during a coma, remain a mystery. It brings to mind the fantasy sequence of the classic BBC tale The Singing Detective, but with a Music City spin.

Watch the video below:

Johnny Dynamite serves as the creative doppelgänger of John Morisi, a synth-centric singer, songwriter, and producer. With this expansive concept, Morisi draws upon the artistic legacy of his grandfather, acclaimed comic book artist Pete Morisi, adopting the moniker of one of his most celebrated characters—a rogue detective from the city’s underbelly. This alter ego is a poignant reflection of his narrative approach, as depicted in The Tale of Tommy Gunn. Besides, it’s just plain fun.

Emerging onto the music scene in the mid-2010s, Dynamite carved out his own distinct space within the bustling underground DIY music scene of New York, before ultimately finding his creative oasis amidst Brooklyn’s diverse cultural landscape after years on tour. His creativity is kindled within the secluded sanctuaries of bedroom studios dotted across the city, a space where he refines his self-recording prowess and jams with his band.

Drawing parallels with The Drums, Johnny Dynamite and the Bloodsuckers spin a magnetic fusion of synth and pop. But where The Drums ride the waves with their surf-rock flair, Johnny Dynamite steers the ship into post-punk territory, crafting a style reminiscent of yesteryears yet undeniably fresh. Echoes of Alex Cameron resonate, every word painting a vivid scene with a cast as vibrant as a neon-lit night. Instead of jesting at the quirks of the modern age, however, Johnny Dynamite invites us into a seedy world of noir-tinted fantasy.

Johnny Dynamite and the Bloodsuckers will be performing at Public Records in Brooklyn for their highly-anticipated record release show. Get tickets HERE.

The Tale of Tommy Gunn is out on vinyl on September 8, 2023, via Born Losers Records.

“You were not the fault line that I needed

I just want to feel ground beneath me, shaken”

The brilliance of Johnny Dynamite reverberates not just as the charismatic face of the act, but also as a wordsmith and crooner. His melancholic, angst-laden vocal prowess and poetic lyrics paint the portrait of a profound, introspective seer, bathed in the trailing luminescence of his musical world.

Much like The Drums, Johnny Dynamite and the Bloodsuckers bring forth an enchanting blend of synth and pop elements. Yet, while The Drums infuse their music with a distinct surf-rock aesthetic, Johnny Dynamite navigates towards a more post-punk, sculpting a sound that’s both vintage and contemporary. The parallels to Alex Cameron are evident in the thematic storytelling approach. Like Cameron, Johnny Dynamite’s lyrics unfold like a captivating novella, packed with a cast of colorful characters and intricate narratives. But while Cameron’s tales are often steeped in a satirical view of modern life, Johnny Dynamite leans towards more fantastical tales, imbued with a gritty noir edge. And finally, the comparison to The Cure is perhaps the most palpable. Both Johnny Dynamite and The Cure navigate through the dark, romantic waters of post-punk with their similar vocal allure and atmospheric synth soundscapes. However, while The Cure often dives deep into the depths of existential despair, Johnny Dynamite’s narratives offer a unique blend of darkness and whimsy, coupled with a satirical spin on classic storytelling tropes.

Love In New Madrid,” the freshly released single from Johnny Dynamite’s much-anticipated album, The Tale of Tommy Gunn, presents a pivotal point for the album’s central character. The lyrical narrative, underscored by Dynamite’s emotive vocal cadence, paints a vivid portrait of a romantic dream turned sour; an awakening to life’s perilous diversions. As the track unfolds, Dynamite’s lyrical interplay evolves into a compelling anthem, gaining momentum as the protagonist’s revelation intensifies.

“Love in New Madrid” is about finding love in new places when you least expect it,” says Dynamite. “On Tommy’s journey to Nashville he meets Valentine, “a saintly wanderer”. In the song he compares finding love to the fault line of New Madrid that is beneath his feet. While enamored, Tommy is cautious and concerned that this new found love could become a natural disaster.”

Listen below:

The Tale of Tommy Gunn, out the 8th of September via Born Losers Records, artfully reinterprets the classic fantasy narrative with a satirical skew. This story unfolds from the somewhat cynical perspective of Tommy, a downtrodden New Yorker yearning for the idyllic success often promised to musicians in the hallowed music halls of Nashville, Tennessee.

Tommy sets off from the concrete jungle of the Big Apple to Nashville, crossing paths with the fateful character of Valentine along the way. Valentine, depicted as a divinely led drifter, decides to join Tommy on his journey, settling into a rented lakeside retreat on Nashville’s outskirts. The narrative takes an unexpected twist as a local recording studio presents Tommy with an enticing, but suspiciously lucrative deal to record his music. As Tommy grapples with the escalating debts, the truth begins to surface, exposing the studio as a smokescreen for a local gang’s money laundering scheme. The swelling financial strain ignites tension and jeopardizes Tommy’s bond with Valentine, culminating in her abrupt disappearance.

Confronted with her baffling absence, Tommy is left to grapple with the stark reality of his predicament. He is plagued by the unknown—wondering if Valentine has been ensnared in a dark plot, fled the spiralling turmoil, or tragically, met a sinister end. During this time, Tommy is sent into a paranoid frenzy taking on the role of a star-crossed lover, wishing to die by the hands of the gang. The end of the tale leaves Tommy shot on the ground, repeating the hook penned in his first song, “now you really want to get close to me.”

Johnny Dynamite serves as the creative doppelgänger of John Morisi, a synth-centric singer, songwriter, and producer. Morisi draws upon the artistic legacy of his grandfather, acclaimed comic book artist Pete Morisi, adopting the moniker of one of his most celebrated characters—a rogue detective from the city’s underbelly. This alter ego is a poignant reflection of his narrative approach, as depicted in The Tale of Tommy Gunn.

Miami’s post-punk outfit, Donzii, triumphantly returns to the dancefloor with their hypnotic disco-infused single, “For The People,” which also serves as the title track for their latest LP, now available via Born Losers Records. Channeling the disco-funk essence of NYC’s late 70s No Wave scene, Balfe’s vocals glide with the same sultry confidence as Deborah Harry, Cristina, and Lizzy Mercier Descloux. Yet, “For The People” takes an unexpected, psychedelic detour with its ethereal synth embellishments and captivating guitar arrangements.

Listen to ‘For The People” below:

Born from 2015 jam sessions in a ramshackle ’70s suburban mansion, Donzii—named after an Italian speedboat company, with an added “i”—was formed by vocalist Jenna Balfe and musician Dennis Fuller. The Donzii universe has expanded with numerous supporting musicians contributing to their unique fusion of electronics, bass guitar, ’80s-inspired guitar, and Balfe’s hauntingly evocative vocals. Their latest offering, “For The People,” is a repress of the band’s two sold-out EPs, “Gladugly” and “Mines,” combined into one LP, and features two unreleased tracks: “Disco Rosie” and the eponymous single “For The People.”

The tumultuous path to their first full-length release featured numerous lineup changes, musical metamorphoses, a passionate love story between Balfe and Fuller, and, as they succinctly describe it, “principled denials of industry rot.” With the release of “For The People,” Donzii continues to defy convention and explore new musical territories, building on the foundation laid during those formative jam sessions in 2015.

Order the album here and listen below:

Donzii made their 2022 SXSW debut and licensed their single Sand for HBO’s The Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin. Previously, their single “Luxury Condo Theme” was featured in a Supreme skateboard campaign. During their Miami residency, Donzii supported acts such as New Order, Boy Harsher, Mr. Twin Sister, Eartheater, and Surfbort.

Morgy Ramone and Trey Frye, aka Philadelphia’s Korine, announce the release of a new video for “Forevermore,” off their highly-anticipated upcoming album Tear. Morgy’s evocative vocal hooks set the stage for the ice-cold ending of a relationship. This is a song where the protagonist has absolutely had it – and Forevermore’s title nestles snugly in a bed of irony. Forever is the last thing on their mind – not with this dawning realization that what they had was ultimately a mirage. “Forevermore” could be a metaphor for any kind of sad conclusion to a connection; from a love relationship to an intervention for a loved one spiraling out of control.

The blue-hued video, directed and edited by Max R. Holland, is a straightforward performance video showcasing the band, but its droll, sullen vibe strongly comes through.

Forming in late 2017, the duo’s debut EP ‘Corsage,’ a moody, lo-fi set of self-recorded synth-driven tracks, gained the band quick traction and a series of tour dates through 2018. Korine debuted with 2018’s New Arrangements (Born Losers Records). Following this release were the singles Uncrossed and To You, released Fall of 2019, marking a stylistic departure from the familiar 80s era influence to a more contemporary pop sound. Their 2020 LP, The Night We Raise, continued this sonic evolution while continuing to showcase the pair’s DIY mentality. Following a year of isolation, Korine returned to touring in 2021 with a full US Tour supporting Small Black and continued into 2022 with several festival appearances including their international debut at Wave Gotik Treffen in Leipzig. Korine are set to release their new album, Tear which is slated for release on February 17th, 2023.
