The youthful indiscretions of The Birthday Party, that tumultuous post-punk troupe of the late 70s and early comprised of Nick Cave, Rowland S Howard, Mick Harvey, Tracy Pew, and Phil Calvert, is now the scandal of the silver screen.

Set to make a splash in North American cinemas this autumn, “Mutiny in Heaven,” wryly helmed by Ian White and produced by Mick Harvey and Wim Wenders, unravels six years of poetic chaos. In the documentary, we are treated to a decadent dissection of a band’s mind, wherein Nick Cave and his youthful comrades shocked polite society to its very core. Their theatrics, those guttural shrieks, a macabre dance of gothic horrors, and an utterly unruly way of life, make one wonder – was it art, madness, or an explosive cocktail of both?

From their earnest beginnings as The Boys Next Door in far-flung Melbourne, to their notorious escapades in London’s underbelly, culminating, predictably, in disbandment, this documentary does a splendid job at bottling both the fleeting moment and the now-matured musings of the band. The film generously bestows upon us clandestine footage, whimsical flights of animation, and concert snippets that are thoroughly gasp-worthy.

Expect candid tête-a-têtes with Cave and the gang, though Howard, regrettably lost to us since 2009, speaks only in memories. Sprinkle in a handful of rare spectacles, snapshots, and voilà — an unforgettable affair of celluloid infamy.

Here’s the official synopsis for the Documentary:

Narrated exclusively by the original band members, Mutiny in Heaven delves deep into a band’s psyche, chronicling how Nick Cave and his school friends startled audiences with their confrontational performances, primal screams, outlaw gothic horror, and anarchic lifestyle. Featuring never-before-seen personal footage from band members, dynamic animation sequences, and jaw-dropping concert clips, the film provides a sweaty, electrifying front-row seat to one of the most legendary live acts. It’s destined to be an instant documentary classic. The film is the first fully authorized telling of The Birthday Party.

Watch the trailer and a clip from Mutiny In Heaven:

As fortune—or perhaps crafty planning—would have it, the documentary traipses around the US just as Nick flits about on his solo and book tour. The film’s itinerary in North American cinemas kicks off in the charming climes of Gainesville, FL. Screenings will continue throughout  October, with the film descending upon Los Angeles just in time for Halloween. Release the bats!

Well, it seems the 43-year-old ‘roam around the world” has ended for The B-52s. The raucous new wave legends are about to embark on their farewell tour, starting 22 August in Seattle, and fittingly ending their run in their home state of Georgia (Atlanta) in November. Their site calls it “their final tour ever of Planet Earth.”

“No one likes to throw a party more than we do, but after almost a half-century on the road, it’s time for one last blow-out,” says Fred Schneider, in a statement.

“Who knew what started as a way to have some fun and play music for our friends’ at house parties in Athens in 1977 would evolve into over 45 years of making music and touring the world. It’s been cosmic,” adds Kate Pierson.

While the band might be retiring from the tour bus, a documentary directed by Craig Johnson and produced by Fred Armisen is in the works to be released next year.

This announcement is not a massive surprise; the band had pretty much decided to throw in the touring towel by autumn of 2019, aside from the occasional festival appearance.  (It’s not even their first farewell tour announcement – as they gave the UK a final bow in 2019.)

For this last cosmic trip, stops include Boston, Chicago, New York, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Washington D.C.

This last hurrah is bringing along The Tubes and KC & The Sunshine Band for support. (One also hopes that perhaps – finally – these purveyors of love and unity locate the fabulous dark green Quiche La Poodle!)

Though this may be the last tour of Planet Earth, there is always “Planet Claire” for our Cosmic Thing friends.

Tickets are available at The B-52s.com.

Are you ready to wander back in time through the streets of cities like New York, London, Manchester, and Sheffield to explore the burgeoning post-punk scene?

An enticing trailer has descended upon us for a new documentary based on Simon Reynolds’ 2005  book, Rip It Up And Start Again. Filmmakers Nikolaos Katranis, Russell Craig Richardson, and Academy-award winner Leon Gast chronicle the evolution of the chaotic punk spirit as it splintered into new genres. The documentary starts at the roots – The Velvet Underground, James Brown, the Doors, Kraftwerk, Kenneth Anger, Maya Deren, German art movements, reggae/ska, the societal despondency of the Vietnam era- and works its way through the next decade and a half, as the rock genre becomes a veritable fractal of sound and its performers reinvent themselves over and over. Goth, New Romantic, No Wave, Industrial – all spawned out of a combination of poverty, boredom, government failures, immense creativity, alternatives to modern therapy, and the exploding demand to shake up the status quo.

Photo: David Godlis

The documentary features highly entertaining and insightful interviews with many luminaries of the era who are often overlooked in nostalgia-fests: Jah Wobble (PiL), Una Baines (The Fall), Alexander Hacke (Einstürzende Neubauten), the late Genesis Breyer-P-Orridge (Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV) Stephen Mallinder (Cabaret Voltaire), A Certain Ratio, and Ana Da Silva (Raincoats).

The Pop Group’s Mark Stewart, who recently released the song collaboration “Cast No Shadow” with Mallinder (via Brooklyn Vegan), makes an appearance. He has no patience for “revisionist history,” and minces no words in his disdain for the mythology or living in the past…a tantalizing insight, to be sure. Mallinder himself explains that their motivation was to upend the highly commercial, macho scene in rock. Some saw punk’s example as the epiphany to strike out on their own; although Jah Wobble straight out mocks the “mannered” anger of punk, dismissing it as “bourgeois.” Never forget who you’re dealing with, here.

These interviews in the trailer are peppered with rare performance footage (including Einstüzende Neubauten) and copious photographs by the likes of David Godlis and Anton Corbijn. We also are treated to new photos of A Certain Ratio, Young Marble Giants, Fad Gadget, The Fall, Richard Hell, Siouxsie, Alan Vega, Bowie,

Although a release date has not yet been announced for Rip It Up and Start Again (a title also taken from the song by the new wave band Orange Juice), an extended trailer has been released.

Genre-defying alt-rock duo Warbly Jets are set to release their new album MONSTERHOUSE this November, and ahead of the release, the pair of Los Angeles-based musicians have unveiled a making-of documentary chronicling the production of the LP.

MONSTERHOUSE is Warbly Jets’ second full-length studio album, following their critically-acclaimed, self-titled debut released back in 2017.

Conjuring tracks that would fit right at home in the Madchester scene of the late 80s and early 90s, for this record, the band pulls no punches. With MONSTERHOUSE, Warbly Jets assemble an expansive assortment of influences that come together in a collision of hooks, grooves, and songwriting across each single and album track.

Thematically the album examines the crossroads where humanity and technology meet, and grapples with all the questions and doubts that arise from living in our current age of digital information.

Here’s  what Warbly Jets’ Samuel Shea and Julien O’Neil about the documentary:

Why did you want to document this?

Samuel: We love being in the studio writing and recording. We enjoy the process that goes into making a record as much as the final product itself. We wanted to share that side of what we do with our fans and listeners.

Julien: We knew this album was going to be a big undertaking and a turning point in direction stylistically. It felt really important to not leave everyone in the dark and bring people along for the experience.

Watching it back, how does it feel to watch yourselves putting the album together?

Samuel: It’s always a strange feeling for me looking back at any older version of us. We learned a lot during the process of making MONSTERHOUSE. Its nostalgic to watch it all back.

Julien: It’s great to see how it evolved from the early days to the end. A LOT morphed in the process of writing and recording. From album title and concept to all the songs being finalized in the moment. Knowing where this album landed in hindsight, it feels really special to watch many of those original moments happening in real time.

How do you think the documentary will add to a fan’s experience of the album once it’s released?

Samuel: I’ve always enjoyed getting any insight into the process of how a record I love was made. The idea was to be able to offer our fans that same exciting feeling of giving a behind the scenes look into how we do what we do. I hope that it’s a special experience for our supporters.

Julien: We’re pulling back the curtain for the first time. We’ve always been very vague about our process and haven’t really allowed any cameras to follow us behind the scenes before this documentary. We wanted to give people an insight to how we do what we do, what it takes to do what we do and how seriously, or not, we approach making music. It’s a companion piece to an album that took every inch and resource we had to make possible.

Composing the soundtrack to a dystopian tomorrow, Chicago’s Replicant emerges from the sonic soundscape as a hybrid composite of the analogue, the organic, and the digital. Composed of crooning vocals, sensual synths, and battering bass lines, Replicant draws influence from both the dark and the lustrous sides of our modern dystopia.

Playing for nearly a decade, the darkwave band has also long devoted their energies toward raising funds and awareness for various causes. In the past, they’ve supported The Voting Rights Project, COVID relief fundraisers, and more. They’re sending out the good vibes once again with a live performance shot at Thalia Hall on YouTube.

The band is premiering a live performance filmed at Thalia Hall, and instead of charging a ticket fee, they are accepting donations that will support AFRORACK, an organization that brings modular synthesis workshops to children and young adults in Chicago’s black and brown communities. Suggested donations of $5 will be accepted until 7/29.

You can donate directly to their PayPal here.

“While we’ve always been proud of the music we’ve put out, we consider our live show to be Replicant in its purest form,” says the band. “Our lighting rig, including a 4×4 foot neon sign, is almost our sentient 4th member. When we were approached by Thalia Hall earlier this year, we knew this was our opportunity to bring our live show to the masses in a time when touring wasn’t quite possible yet.”

Replicant has played with the likes of HEALTH, The Soft Moon, Youth Code, Lust for Youth, Perturbator, Carpenter Brut, and Cold Showers. They also played Cold Waves Festival at the Metro with Front 242, KMFDM, Severed Heads, Stabbing Westward, Cold Cave, Drab Majesty, Statiqbloom, and many more.

Witness what the band calls a “visual and sonic imprint blurring the lines between seduction and punishment.”

The live-streamed concert was shot by filmmaker and The Cure’s longtime collaborator Nick Wickham, where Robert Smith and Co. played their 1989 LP in full along with an encore of rarities and deep cuts.

Three songs from the concert—”Plainsong”, “Pictures Of You”, and “Disintegration” are now available for you to watch below.

“Our five shows at the Sydney Opera House in May 2019 – celebrating the 30th anniversary of the 1989 album Disintegration – are among the most memorable we have ever played -indeed, our entire Sydney trip was like a wonderful dream… I am so happy the final night of the run was captured in such expressive style by our longtime friend and director Nick Wickham – the release of the whole concert can’t be too far away… “

For those who loved the Industrial Accident Wax Trax! Records documentary released earlier this year, your cup runneth over! Now, a Kickstarter campaign has been announced for The History of Industrial Music: The Chicago Way, a documentary featuring interviews with Al Jourgensen of Ministry, Revolting Cocks and so many other acts, as well as members of My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult, Die Warzau, Pigface and more.

The new doc, whose title is a play on the line spoken by Sean Connery in the 1987 Crime Drama The Untouchables, takes a deeper and more encompassing look at Chicago’s prominent role in the development of industrial music throughout the 1980s and ’90s.

The film’s producers write on Kickstarter:

“This movie is based in Chicago, but the story is global. Chicago was the epicenter of this style of music that rose from the dirty dancefloors to airwaves of MTV via the groundbreaking show ‘120 Minutes.’ Soon clubs from LA to Berlin were spinning these artists — but how did it start? What was the engine that made it go? What caused this beautiful marriage of dance, rock, disco, synths, aggression and attitude? Why was there a chicken needed in the recording studio for inspiration? (what?!) … It’s a story, with many wild, true, tales that needs to be told.”

After raising their first round of through private funding, the producers explain in the campaign that they’re turning now to crowdfunding via fans of the genre to cover the post-production costs such as music licensing, legal fees, physical production of a Blu-ray release, film festival submissions and more.

Head over to Kickstarter to see all the perks and awards for contributing towards the campaign here.

New Order’s latest concert and documentary “Decades” is set to air on premium cable channel Showtime starting at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT on Friday, Dec. 27.

The film “New Order: Decades” documents the Manchester band’s synth-orchestra collaboration with artist Liam Gillick the event named after Factory Records founder Tony Wilson’s short lived program on Granada Television “So It Goes…”.

Directed by Mike Christie,  the film was originally broadcast on the U.K.’s Sky Arts television network 2 days past the 40th Anniversary of Joy Division’s legendary appearance on Granada Reports.

During the 90 minute film, Bernard Sumner, Stephen Morris, and Gillian Gilbert make preparations for their appearance at 2017’s Manchester International Festival as New Order backed by a 12 piece synth orchestra.

New Order would perform this five times during the festival, following with an encore performance, in Turin, Italy,  and Vienna, Austria earlier in 2018.

The concerts were well received, treating fans to a set list full of rarities and  six songs not played live since the 80’s and 90’s, such as “Dream Attack”, “All Day Long”, “Vanishing Point”, “Subculture”, “Behind Closed Doors” (for the first time), and the Joy Division track “Disorder” for the first time since ever since the death of Ian Curtis.

In the film, New Order frontman Bernard Sumner discusses how he whenever he sings Curtis’ lyrics, he always gets an image of the late singer in his head while performing.

Executive producer Dinah Lorder had this to say about the film’s airing on Showtime:

“New Order: Decades offers a rare chance to enter the band’s private world, understand the visual philosophy of their aesthetic and design, and witness their collaborative, creative processes first hand. We’re delighted that Showtime’s acquisition of the film means New Order’s many US fans will be able to enjoy this unique treat.”
