The artist Erin Hoagg, under the name Rare DM, has found her stride during quarantine. The song “Send Nudes” and its adjacent video have sent ripples across the electronic music spectrum. Rare DM’s style, a soft but demanding sort of approach, is relatable in the modern age of online dating profiles, text messages, and ghosting while her romantic dark pop music is alluring, mesmerizing and will have you curious for what she will release next. We chatted with Rare DM about her work, fostering kittens, and the future right before her first livestream set ever for this Saturday’s Dark Energy x Synthicide Holiday Special (scroll to the bottom for more photos and information on the event).

Your artist name literally refers to Direct Messages, correct?

That is one of the meanings! I like that people have their own association with DM – some people think of Dungeon Master from D&D, I’ve also heard Dance Music, Dark Matter, Draco Malfoy… I like Distant Memories and Dream Machine also. So yes, and also no.

Did you know from the beginning of your project that’s where you wanted to derive your lyrical concepts from?

Loneliness in technology has been a big theme in my writing – we have the potential to be so connected to people through direct messages, emails, text, facebook, snapchat, tinder, etc, that there are a thousand new and exciting ways to feel rejected now. I did not set out to derive my musical concepts from direct messages and texts, although it has evolved naturally that my dissatisfaction with modern dating and communication makes it’s way into my lyrics. My writing is often very pointed and based in reality – sometimes featuring actual IRL or text conversations, otherwise I am on another planet entirely. Idealizing something, someone, somewhere, and living in a fantasy realm. It could be considered a coping mechanism or perhaps a form of manifestation, an attempt at making my dreams a reality.

“Send Nudes” was created after the disappointment of modern-day dating, how do you remain positive about things like love and relationships while living in this internet-based, quarantine world?

Oh boy. To be honest, it’s focusing on my career and doing interviews like this that is getting me through it currently. That and fostering kittens… (I have fostered 21 since March through Bushwick Street Cats) Currently I am the least focused on dating that I have been in years – and it’s been very strange. I suppose my coping mechanism is literally not thinking about it. The last time I was really focused on my love life was when I wrote “send nudes” and I suppose I have been distracting myself and focusing on my career since. I crave physical affection like hugs and snuggles all the time and fostering kittens helps me not get sad about that. I know I could meet someone and just cuff up for the winter, but I have no interest in settling. I want that rare love – in the very least the potential for it. Unless I am really knocked off my seat by someone special (is that an expression?) I am not interested. Does that count as positivity? This is a hard question. Ideally I trip in the middle of the road and someone is like “omg here let me help you” and they are just perfect for me and the rest is history. I’m a sucker for romance.

Can you tell me about your upcoming live set?
I’m still deciding a few things about it, but as usual I will be going DAW-less using my Octotrack as my main instrument. Then going to sync my Machinedrum with it, run that through my OTO bam reverb, and probably bring a synth drum, and delay pedal to run my vocals through / have the midi synced with my electron gear. I’ll be playing “send nudes” for sure, and a few songs off of Vanta Black as well as some unreleased material.

As a woman who is writing, programming, and recording everything on her own, do you find that you have something to prove to people who might doubt your expertise?

Absolutely. The misogyny in music is so real, I have finished a whole set with my OT and machinedrum while singing etc, and had a guy come up to me, point at the VJ, and ask if that dude was “djing my music for me” … like what? Did you not see me playing my gear the whole set? Did you think I was miming it?
I have worked very hard to be the producer and songwriter that I am. In general people (usually men) often assume that women aren’t producers and don’t make their own music. It’s a really frustrating stereotype.

What’s next after your success with the “Send Nudes” video?

Another album! I have dancier/more techno forward songs coming, and plenty of darkwave / analog as always. Still got some sad songs, though I am really excited to have some higher bpm tunes on the way. Expect more editorial work with Lissyelle Laricchia and looking forward to working with Oliver Rivard and Jake Moore again on videos! I can’t wait to shoot the next vid. I don’t know how I am going to release my next album yet, though I am ready to have some vinyl pressings of my music. Ideally I’ll have some opportunities coming my way from “send nudes” that I don’t even know about yet!! We’ll see!!
Be sure to check out the Dark Energy x Synthicide Holiday Special with artists Red Window, Rare DM, Confines and Choke Chain Saturday, December 19 at 8p EST on Twitch

The Cure’s Robert Smith, no stranger to charity events, performed the Seventeen Seconds album tracks  “In Your House,” “M”, and “Play for Today” live for the Robin Ince-hosted “Nine Lessons and Carols for Curious People” 24-hour livestream.

The songs, which celebrated their 40th anniversary earlier this year, were included for prerecorded performance broadcast on Saturday, December 12th. During the set Smith, sans shoes and band, performed the songs solo, backed by only a drum machine, from what appears to be his home studio.

The event premiered via the Cosmic Shambles Network where viewers were encouraged to donate to Nine Lessons, with proceeds being distributed to four charities: Turn2Us, Doctors Without Borders, Mind, and the Kings Place Music Foundation.

Watch the performance below:

Robert Smith is also scheduled to perform live with Gorillaz for their Song Machine events during ticketed livestreams on Saturday and Sunday.

Over 3 days in December Krake Festival is celebrating 10 years of its existence with a very special edition. The festival organisers broke their backs to come up with something special in these crazy times and we think they succeeded. The festival covers three days of music, live a/v shows, the very first of Krake TV (their own music TV format), a Call-In Talk Show, and an interactive multi-stream rave. A total of 10 streams happening at the same time, brought to you by some of the coolest crews from across the globe.

Krake TV: To expand the streaming format for festivals, they have developed Krake TV, a music TV format with different shows presenting music videos, artist features, comedy in cooperation with backstage – Das DJ Magazin, a brand new techno workout as well as the traditional Krake raffle. Get ready for one hour of Krake TV on all three days!

Person Man Woman Camera TV show: Our Call-In Talk Show with Dieter Polen and DJ Elliver is discussing the most important and ridiculous issues of our times with their audience.

V.A. Music Compilation: To round it off, Krake are releasing music from some of the key artists that have been playing for them during the past 10 years. It would have been too much to ask all of them, but Krake did ask some if they wanted to contribute to a jubilee compilation and now they are happy and proud to be able to present a V.A. compilation with over 80 tracks! The compilation is released digitally only and sold for a very, very low price. All will automatically take part in the charity raffle/tombola.

Charity raffle/tombola: The annual label fair won’t happen for obvious reasons – but the raffle takes place nonetheless! Numerous labels have given Krake huge packages – partly their whole catalogue – and brands such as Irie Daily, Native Instruments, Ableton and Elektron have contributed to an amazing selection of prizes. All profit of ticket sales will be donated to the inclusive project Ick Mach Welle and Seawatch.

Festival Highlights:

ARAD’S AUGMENTED FANTASY

The Arad Augmented Fantasy is a virtual playground for the development of performance characters that interact with, inspire, and are inspired by the Artist’s musical output. These shape-shifting characters and personas are an attempt to visualise the intentions and feelings of individual tracks. The Arad Augmented Fantasy experience is the beginning of a project that will live in many virtual and real environments. Whether it’s as an AV show in a club, streaming performance on line, or else though podcasts, Open World games, or social media this projects aim is to create a feedback loop where the music and lyrical content, mutates into a multitude of visual personas and these intern go on to inspire and create more sonic genes themselves.

DEVIN MOHR & JOCHEN KRONIER PRESENT: XENOPROBE (PREMIERE)

Devin Mohr and Jochen Kronier are multi-media artists living in Berlin. They share a similar aesthetic and musical sensibility for their other-worldly projects. Both are accomplished customers. Jochen has a special talent for music production and arrangement while Devin is a lyricist/songwriter. Jochen has spent much of his career making pop stars look amazing with his dynamic costume and shoe design. Devin has spent a big part of his career producing designs for entertainment, lighting design and set design. The piece entitled ‘Xenoprobe‘ is an electronic musical and was made exclusively for Krake music festival. It follows two aliens who observe the human condition through music, humor, and spectacle. Sometimes ambient and sometimes club-trance, the piece explores absurdity and beauty with a lighthearted approach. (And maybe a few barbs for the more conservative viewer!)

DJ STINGRAY

Permit yourself to zoom out of your singular reality enough such that all activity, all that is knowingly accumulated and all that is unnervingly accepted on this earth, is a spectrum of information. This includes the thermodynamics of our own biological structure. Now consider that music is a segment of this spectrum, and DJ Stingray’s nexus of electro and techno a further specialised section forged in bypassing normalised circuits to confront the future, to articulate abstract dynamics.

HELENA HAUFF

For a top-flight DJ and producer, Helena Hauff is remarkably relatable. Despite moving from the grotty confines of Hamburg’s Golden Pudel to big festival stages in the space of a few years, the German artist seems immune to the charms of fame. She’s pushing a particularly wild strain of music in uncompromising fashion, placing gnashing electro by acidic techno and chugging EBM. As her star has risen, she’s become a beacon of authenticity, making her one of the best-loved DJs to emerge in recent memory.

UNDERGROUND KITCHISTANCE

Underground Kitchistance is about food and music. Both tasting and hearing are physical sensations, culturally developed, and formed into cuisine and music. The chef and the DJ play a similar role: they play and experiment, they teach and educate, they control and create. Underground Kitchistance consists of Alienata, Max Durante, and DJ Flush, three DJs who have been musical and real-life friends for a long time, sharing their passion for music as well as for cooking. During one hour they will play a b2b2b and cook a full dinner with several courses. One try only, no practice was allowed – A challenge, a feast, a rave for your ears and your mouth. Techno Food and Revolution.

TRANSFORMA PRES. “POKALE” WITH A SOUNDTRACK BY SHED (LIVE A/V)

Transforma produce audiovisual performances, installations, projections for music, video clips, and have worked extensively with theatre and dance. Creating images and atmospheres which establish a connection between the material properties of their subject, abstract storytelling, and a hands-on approach to production, they have developed their own language within the live visual experience. They have long-standing collaborations with numerous artists, directors, and musicians and have performed live and exhibited at many major festivals and venues around the world. Transforma was formed in 2001 in Berlin by Luke Bennett, Baris Hasselbach, and Simon Krahl.

The Brooklyn-based, minimal electronics artist Sean McBride, under his solo project Martial Canterel, has released a live LP for Bandcamp Day. Recorded for the Halloween edition of Dark Energy, the album – titled Hallowe’en 2020 – is as heart-wrenching and melancholic as you’d expect from Canterel’s catalog of analog synths and danceable beats. With artwork by fellow Xeno and Oaklander bandmate, Liz Wendelbo, alongside mixing and mastering sound engineer Egan Frantz, the release is worth supporting if you’re looking for that perfect moody, fall soundtrack.

You can preview and purchase it here.

The Minneapolis-based Dark Energy party has returned back to monthly streaming after a hiatus over the summer. Follow them on their Facebook to keep up with future announcements on live artists and DJs. In the meantime, watch Xeno and Oaklander’s excellent performance at Dark Energy from April this year.

Portland-based synth duo Xibling are a frenzy of unfettered creative energy, that has been hard to contain during this global pandemic. So much so, in fact, that the pair have been performing many live streams since quarantine began. Now the pair are getting back into the thick of it again, returning to making it a weekly endeavor after an initial unbroken run from March 22nd to May 24th.

Not only that, but Xibling, the creative partnership of both vocalist Moriah West, and instrumentalist Julian Thieme, have been utilizing their 80s infused avant-garde jazz-like sensibilities to write and perform almost completely new music during each that week of lockdown while bringing a raw and almost spontaneous creative energy to their engaging performances.

While we wait for followup record to 2019’s remarkable and genre-defying Yes Body mini album, you can grab some of these new tracks on Xibling’s Bandcamp, as vocalist Moriah West explains:

“We released 15 of the first songs for $5, for one day only on Bandcamp’s last all-proceeds-to-artists day. We are going to release another big batch for the next one, on (August 7th.)”

The streams go live on Xibling’s Facebook and Twitch, and are all still available for viewing as well as being available on the duo’s YouTube channel.

Look for their next Live Stream at 3pm today, August 2nd, 2020.

To wrap up the Dark Energy quarantine livestream series, the Berlin-based artist, Kris Baha performed as the headliner on June 20th. The Power Station label boss, known for his danceable new beat tempos and slick EBM basslines, played a series of his most loved tracks, including his sultry remix of Sfire’s “Sfire 2”. As an acid-tinged burst of electric colors, Baha’s background visuals created by Chris Campion of Multiple Man, added another element of energy to the mix (and even a lizard if you watch through to the end!) with its flashing colors and 3-D objects. Watch the performance below:

Last weekend was the final Dark Energy livestream event after an incredible series of live performances that spanned over the past few months of quarantine. It did not disappoint. The San Antonio, Texas MVTANT presented an incredible low-res VHS performance of delicately balanced Wax Trax!-era drum programming with melodic EBM basslines and horror movie-inspired synth patterns. We loved this video and can’t wait to hear more from MVTANT.

Dark Energy gave 100% of their proceeds from this event to Black Lives Matter charities. If you enjoyed this video, please consider donating/learning about A Mother’s Initiative and The Movement for Black Lives.

Last weekend’s installment of the virtual Dark Energy series proved to be another exciting one with live sets by Visceral Anatomy, Fee Lion, and Multiple Man. The event continues to provide a unique experience through visuals and music, while allowing donations to go straight to the artists.

Today we are premiering the mind-bending performance by the Australian twin duo Multiple Man. Filmed in both Brisbane and New York City, the video is awash in acidic colors and 3D rendering (not far from the wonderful live visuals created by fellow Australian Tom Ellard for Severed Heads) that is quite unlike any other livestream performance we’ve encountered during quarantine. Even though it’s got a vintage VHS feel to it (with a little humor), the performance simultaneously propels them forward with new and uniquely inspired material. Watch the entire set below:
