The inaugural Dark Ceremony Festival, meticulously curated to blend timeless classic post-punk with the innovative edge of modern synth and darkwave, is set to take over White Oak Music Hall in Houston, Texas, on June 15th. This event is set to celebrate the legacy and evolution of these intertwined genres, showcasing a diverse lineup that highlights both genre-defining classics and cutting-edge acts poised to redefine the scene. For one night, attendees will be immersed in the depth and diversity of a sound that has captivated listeners for generations, all within the vibrant atmosphere of one of Texas’s most iconic music venues.

The lineup features rising stars and Texas natives Twin Tribes, who are set to take the stage with their shadow-drenched melodies. Their ability to weave the darkness of 80s post-punk with atmospheric synths and driving basslines has earned them a place as torchbearers of the genre.

Clan of Xymox, with their rich four-decade history, continues to be a pivotal force in the darkwave scene, weaving innovative synth work with atmospheric aesthetics that delve into the more melancholic realms of New Wave.

Urban Heat, hailing from the vibrant musical landscape of Austin, offers a modern synth-driven take on post-punk. Their sound, edged with the rawness of the city’s rock heritage and polished with a contemporary sheen, creates a soundscape that is at once gritty and sleek, commanding attention and stirring the soul.

Manchester post-punk legends Chameleons will take us through a retrospective journey with their timeless tracks. As pioneers who helped shape the sonic blueprint of post-punk, their presence at ‘Dark Ceremony’ promises to be a pilgrimage to the roots of the genre for many attendees.

Lathe of Heaven will carry the banner of anarcho post-punk into the night, their music resonating with the spirit of resistance and the unvarnished truth, channeling the essence of the genre’s early days into the present with unbridled energy and purpose.

Body of Light is set to illuminate the evening with their shimmering synth-pop melodies. Their music is a nostalgic nod to the neon glow of the 80s, reimagined for today’s audience in a vivid soundscape that’s both captivating and danceable.

Also from Austin, Haunt Me crafts their own brand of romantic darkwave, conjuring a sound that is as haunting as it is enchanting. Their melodies are a siren call to the heart, weaving tales of shadowed romance into their lush compositions.

As the ceremony unfolds, each act contributes its own voice to the night’s chorus. Curse Mackey, a figure known for his hypnotic presence, bridges the divide between industrial rhythms and the raw emotion of goth rock. Then there’s SINE, the electrifying brainchild of Rona Rougeheart, where aggressive rhythms meet sultry vocals in a dance of power and introspection. Adding to the eclectic mix, Glass Spells from San Diego envelops the audience in their distinctive synth-pop sound, blending hypnotic female vocals with the sharp resonance of synths and the pulsating drive of bass lines, creating an immersive experience that interlaces the depth of indie and post-punk with the vibrancy of modern electronic beats. Rounding out the lineup is the classic Minnesota goth rock act Autumn.

Dark Ceremony is quickly morphing into the ultimate must-attend for anyone who’s ever donned black eyeliner and swayed to haunting rhythms. It’s a spiritual journey for the black-clad faithful, a bridge spanning from the hallowed grounds of Manchester’s gritty clubs to the pulsing heart of contemporary Austin. This event relives the glory days with a wink and a nod to the present.

Tickets for the festival will go on presale starting Thursday, March 7th at 10 AM, followed by the public onsale beginning Friday, March 8th at 10 AM.

Austin post-punk trio Urban Heat has unveiled a brilliant new track that sounds like The English Beat performed a long-lost collaboration with ska era No Doubt, blending new wave sounds with catchy dark pop hooks. “Have You Ever?” features a duet with Los Angeles-based synth/alt-pop producer/songwriter Party Nails.

The song questions everything you’ve been taught,” proclaims vocalist Jonathan Horstmann, “…Those times that truth seems more like a thick fog than a stone tablet.”

Have You Ever? lives in the questions, bringing listeners a relatable anthem. Featuring penetrating basslines, striking synths and attention grabbing melodies, it is a relatable anthem about living in the questions of life. Hortsmann’s throaty baritone provides hints of melancholy in his signature spellbinding journey. Their lyrics delve into timely, socially conscious messages, resulting in a cathartic and nostalgic listening experience as Horstmann muses upon existence and romanticism against a penetrating industrial gothic pulse.

“The track is about finding inspiration in processing life-changing current events, navigating mental health crises as well as exploring the different ways our minds cope with a slow-moving apocalypse,” he says.

Watch the video below:

Urban Heat formed in 2019 when multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Jonathan Horstmann enlisted Kevin Naquin and Paxel Foley to form a live show based on his analogue sound design.  The three Austin music scene vets decided to form a supergroup of diverse rock artists.

“There’s not a ton of other Black musicians in Austin who play rock, and having that representation was important to me. I didn’t wanna be the only Black artist in an otherwise all-white band,” confides Horstmann.

Urban Heat have received acclaim from the likes of KUTX of NPR and are set to perform at Austin City Limits.

The band’s 2022 six-song EP Wellness is a raw and authentic narrative on coping with mental health issues. From the things that trigger us, to the ways we cope, Wellness explores “disenfranchisement, nostalgia, self-doubt, and depression,” confides Jonathan Horstmann. The collection of introspective songs also provides a level of comfort, reminding listeners that they are not alone and we’re all going to get through this together.

“When we were young the future was bright. No one told us we were buried alive. Now we aspire just to barely survive. Trapped in a box, searching for light. There is just no future left for us.”

Taking inspiration from synthwave, new wave, and goth, Austin-based post-punk trio Urban Heat delivers dreamy, dark pop dance beats.  Their woeful new single, “Trust,” is a lamentation of a lost future and the feelings of defeat this invokes.

Fusing dark 80’s stylings with modern flourishes, with Jonathan Horstmann’s throaty baritone muses upon human existence and romanticism against an industrial, gothic pulse. We hear elements of She Wants Revenge, Sisters of Mercy, New Order, Midnight Oil, and a dark Twin Shadow in the sound of this song, which is on their Wellness EP via Spaceflight Records. It hearkens back to the nuclear threat vibes of the 1980s; where songs like “99 Luftballons” and “Forever Young” captured that same resignation of stolen happiness, but now with the added gravitas of worldwide unrest.

“It’s about the disenfranchisement of a generation,” explains Horstmann. “We were promised this sort of ideal that many of us will never achieve, and from a personal place, that’s just a really tough pill to swallow. It’s compounded by the knowledge of the kind of world our children are inheriting. This is Urban Heat at our most nihilistic.”

The video for the song captures the moodiness of the band, and their magnetic personality as a collective. This is a beautiful encomium to what could have been… and now we must adjust to a new normal.

Watch below:

Urban Heat was formed by Horstmann in 2019 when he invited multi-instrumentalists Kevin Naquin and Paxel Foley to round out his analogue sound design experiments at live shows. They released six singles between 2019 and 2022, and while the pandemic thwarted a SXSW appearance, they returned in 2022 as official artists.

Their new EP was co-produced by Horstmann and Jonas Wilson (The Black Angels, A. Sinclair).

Urban Heat’s Wellness EP is out now.
