Embark on an enthralling exploration of avant-garde underground music artistry at this year’s highly anticipated TERMINUS Festival, returning triumphantly to the vibrant city of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, from July 27-30, 2023. This year’s fest showcases some of the best and most innovative industrial, darkwave, and post-punk acts in the scene today.

Headlining the festival are EBM music titans Nitzer Ebb, and synth-pop luminaries Beborn Beton, with the lineup rounded out with a well-curated assortment of newer talents, including the ethereal SRSQ, Swedish synth-pop duo Ashbury Heights, hypnotic NNHMN, Ultra Sunn, Spike Hellis, Patriarchy, and many more.

Don’t miss out on this extraordinary celebration of cutting-edge music. For more information and to secure your tickets when they become available, visit www.terminus-festival.com.

Here are a few acts to check out while lurking about Calgary during this year’s festival:

Beborn Beton

Behold the exquisite sounds of this legendary German synthpop band, born in 1989 from the inspired minds of vocalist Stefan Netschio, keyboard player and drummer Stefan Tillmann, and keyboard player Michael Wagner. With their debut album Tybalt, released in 1993, the band cemented their place in the annals of electronic music history, drawing upon the best tracks from their first three years together to create a timeless masterpiece that was met with resounding acclaim and adoration from fans and critics alike. With a sound that is both evocative and enchanting, this band continues to captivate listeners around the globe.

SRSQ

SRSQ (aka Kennedy Ashlyn)’s unique songwriting turns her private struggles and sorrows into stirring, redemptive anthems. Her multi-octave range embodies tempest and triumph, the darkest nights breaking into brightest dawns, proving her a musician of elemental force.

Ultra Sunn

Hailing from the heart of Brussels, this post-punk/electro duo formed in 2019 by Sam Hugé (Fantøme) and Gaelle Souflet. Together, they create a captivating sound that combines Sam’s deep and resonant vocals with Gaelle’s meticulously crafted analogue synthesizers and industrial drum machines. As astute observers of the world around them, this dynamic duo creates pulsating, luminous, and hypnotic anthems that tackle important topics such as gender equality, self-improvement, combating street harassment, and fighting against anxiety, all imbued with a potently positive energy.

Harsh Symmetry

Emerging from the depths of Sacramento, California comes the hauntingly beautiful sounds of Harsh Symmetry, the ethereal darkwave project of the gifted musician Julian Sharwarko. With a unique sound that blends nostalgia and revivalism, Sharwarko’s spellbinding electronic compositions conjure up a mood of melancholic gloom. Reminiscent of legendary artists such as Dave Gahan, Cinder, Julian Cope, and Human League’s Phil Oakey, Sharwarko’s mournful vocals take center stage, weaving a mesmerizing sonic tapestry that will leave you spellbound.

Patriarchy

Patriarchy, hailing from the sprawling metropolis of Los Angeles, break down the age-old societal barriers that have held us back for far too long. Their music revels in the eerie and unsettling, delving into the deepest depths of the human psyche. With their fierce, uncompromising sound, Patriarchy leaves an indelible mark on the listener, challenging them to confront the darkness that lurks within and embrace the weirdness that sets us free.

Spike Hellis

Prepare to be blown away by the phenomenal sounds of Spike Hellis, an electrifying EBM duo from Los Angeles. Comprised of Cortland Gibson and Elaine Chang, their old-school style is a force to be reckoned with, channeling the darkest recesses of the human psyche and spreading their gospel of disenchantment and sarcasm far and wide. With a sound that is both blistering and unrelenting, Spike Hellis announces their arrival with a sense of urgency and conviction.

But as sure as summer fades to fall

The winds of winter burn us all

I just hope that I’ve told ya that it’s heaven to hold ya

Soul searching, songwriting, and self-discovery has taken SRSQ’s Kennedy Ashlyn into uncharted waters. With her magnificent new single “Used To Love,” from her sophomore LP, Ever Crashing, an album that weaves Ashlyn’s private battles into stirring pop anthems.

“Used To Love” is a gorgeous break-up ballad, an inner strength edging through the cracks. “Lyrically, the song is about “trying to rekindle a dying flame, and trying to understand how something that once shone so bright could wither away,” she recently told FLOOD.

Today she has shared a stunning self-directed video for Used To Love Me. The video details the after-hours of a glamour-camp-fantasy world, called the Lost Love Resort, at which SRSQ takes a one-night residency.

Cinematographer Leigh Violet and I drew on visual references from many artists, people, and real-life locations, including David Lynch, John Waters, the Madonna Inn, Creepy Gals, Busby Berkeley, The Cramps, Jane Mansfield, and uncanny animatronics of yesteryear,” says Ashlyn. “The video cheekily plays at the fact that through it all, in this fantasy world as in real life, I will always have my music and my cats.”

Watch the video below:

Kennedy Ashlyn aka SRSQ [pronounced ‘seer-skew’] will also be touring for the first time in nearly three years to support Ever Crashing. Kicking things off at the Levitation festival in Austin, TX, she makes her way to the East Coast, supporting Ceremony in Atlanta, Nashville, Philadelphia, NYC, and more. On December 2, she joins Choir Boy down the West Coast, performing in Vancouver, Seattle, San Francisco, and more. Check out a full list of dates below; you can purchase tickets here.

After being diagnosed with ADHD and bipolar disorder, Ashlyn underwent a profound personal overhaul. These periods of turmoil operated as a muse. “Songs begin to echo within me, gradually reverberating clearer and more vividly,” she says. “As melodies and arrangements come into focus, the songs act like containers, vessels in which to externalize and exorcise tumultuous emotions.”

Ever Crashing refers to Ashlyn’s recurring sensation of being trapped in the crest of a wave, turned and churned in the surf, mirroring the cycles of self-flagellation and surrender that she battles being bipolar. Music becomes, instead, a form of energetic transmutation and exquisite catharsis. Ashlyn’s remarkable vocals, hovering somewhere in the ether between Kate Bush and The Sundays, takes these emotions and crafts intense, stirring dream pop.

“I became myself in the process of making this record.” From the first choral swells of opener “It Always Rains,” it’s clear this collection exists on an ascendant plane, capturing an artist in superbloom. From swooning end credits balladry (“Dead Loss”) to orchestral slow-burn torch songs (“Abyss”) to dizzying shoegaze heavens (“Someday I Will Bask In The Sun”), the album exudes a sense of aching grandeur and bewildered joy, rich with triumphs hard won and lost loves never forgotten.

Listen to and order Ever Crashing here.

Bipolar disorder becomes a muse for a raw, vulnerable new track from Kennedy Ashlyn, aka SRSQ. Ashlyn’s unique songwriting turns her private struggles and sorrows into stirring, redemptive anthems. Her multi-octave range embodies tempest and triumph, the darkest nights breaking into brightest dawns, proving her a musician of elemental force: the delicate, forlorn “Abyss” (from her upcoming album Ever Crashing) is no exception.

The accompanying self-directed video (with cinematography by frequent collaborator Leigh Violet) depicts her submerged in water. It’s an intense metaphor for the struggles of mental illness, both in the personal experience and that of the collective, working in tandem. Ever Crashing began materializing in the wake of an ADHD and bipolar disorder diagnosis, prompting a profound personal overhaul, using songwriting to exorcise tumultuous emotions. Ever Crashing refers to Ashlyn’s recurring sensation of being trapped in the crest of a wave, turned and churned in the surf, mirroring the cycles of self-flagellation and surrender that she battles. Music becomes, instead, a form of energetic transmutation and exquisite catharsis. Ashlyn’s dreamy vocals hover somewhere in the ether between Kate Bush and Julee Cruise, or Weyes Blood and Zola Jesus.

“Abyss describes my darkest days with the imagery of my skinless body trapped in a riptide, its rawness exacerbated by the rushing saltwater,” she says. “Suspended above is a glowing orb, the promise of peace, growing fainter and fainter as the tide pulls me down. I watch it disappear in yearning surrender, only to be resurrected by the powerful shine of the sun, which cuts through the water at random, allowing me to ascend if only for a short time. The video was shot almost entirely underwater using a homemade periscope.”

Watch the stunning video for Abyss below:

Ever Crashing. produced by Chris Coady (Beach House, Xeno & Oaklander, Slowdive, Zola Jesus)  comes out August 19th via Dais Records on vinyl and across all digital platforms.

You can pre-order or pre-save here. Stay tuned for touring and live show updates.

The immensely talented Kennedy Ashlyn, also known as the mastermind behind SRSQ, is spinning her sorrow into proverbial gold: her multi-octave voice belts soulful anthems of redemption from struggle continue to pack an emotional blow with each stirring note.

The rekindling of a dying flame fuels the fire for her powerful new single, “Used To Love”. “It’s about mourning a thing you have not yet lost but can feel slipping away,” Ashlyn reveals. “It’s simultaneously very personal, yet universally relevant as we all seek to hold on to our most precious people and moments.” The track comes off her forthcoming album via Dais Records, Ever Crashing.

Listen below:

After being diagnosed with ADHD and bipolar disorder, Ashlyn underwent a profound personal overhaul. These periods of turmoil operated as a muse. “Songs begin to echo within me, gradually reverberating clearer and more vividly,” she says. “As melodies and arrangements come into focus, the songs act like containers, vessels in which to externalize and exorcise tumultuous emotions.”

The complexity of Ashlyn’s songwriting is staggering: all tracks were written and played solely by the artist. The album was produced/mixed by Chris Coady (Beach House, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Zola Jesus).

Ever Crashing refers to the recurring sensation of being trapped in the crest of a wave, turned and churned in the surf, mirroring the cycles of self-flagellation and surrender that she battles being bipolar. Music becomes, instead, a form of energetic transmutation and exquisite catharsis. Ever Crashing comes out on the 19th of August on vinyl and across all digital platforms. You can pre-order or pre-save here.

Three years of soul searching, songwriting, and self-discovery has taken SRSQ’s Kennedy Ashlyn down a complex path. Finally, she is unleashing her magnificent sophomore LP, Ever Crashing. Ashlyn’s private struggles and sorrows are woven into stirring anthems, including the dazzling single “Saved for Summer”.

“This song echoes the yearning to escape a depressive miasma, the desperate desire to stop watching life through a window,” Ashlyn reveals. “The video takes place in the psychedelic haze of isolation and stagnation, of being suspended in the grasp of a downward spiral, longing for liberation. At its core burns a tepid hope that ‘real’ life remains within reach.”

The self-directed video, created in collaboration with cinematographer Leigh Violet (Visage Irregular) is a surreal performance placing SRSQ on a leopard print sofa by the ocean; there are elements recalling David Byrne floating in a digital hyperspace in “Once In A Lifetime”

Watch below:

After being diagnosed with ADHD and bipolar disorder, Ashlyn underwent a profound personal overhaul. These periods of turmoil operated as a muse. “Songs begin to echo within me, gradually reverberating clearer and more vividly,” she says. “As melodies and arrangements come into focus, the songs act like containers, vessels in which to externalize and exorcise tumultuous emotions.”

Philadelphia deathrockers Executioner’s Mask return from the blue-lit grotto of despair with an epic, plodding dirge: the hypnotic “Things Fall Apart”, off their forthcoming LP, Winterlong.

Kennedy Ashlyn of SRSQ joins in the chorus with her haunting vocals, evoking an incantation spell of explosive sound; reminding listeners of Swans, Current 93, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, and AFI. The song begins with an insistent marching beat, surrounded by eerie synths and mournful guitar, building a crescendo for the deep, melancholy mix of Gambit’s baritone with Ashlyn’s gorgeous soprano. It’s pure, undistilled gothic rock at its unsettling core.

Listen to the haunting track below:

Executioner’s Mask is the brainchild of metal vocalist Jay Gambit (Crowhurst), Ryan Wilson (Howling Void), and Craig Mickle (LACE, Cop Warmth). Executioner’s Mask released their solemn demo True Blue in 2018.  Two years later, the band released their raw, desperate debut with Profound Lore Records, Despair Anthems.  The band continues their reign with Winterlong, featuring production from Jeff Zeigler (The War On Drugs) and Ryan Schwabe (Oneohtrix Point Never).

With kaleidoscopic ambition, the band announces forthcoming remixes from Winterlong with an ensemble cast featuring members of Deafheaven, Full Of Hell, No Joy, Xiu Xiu, and The Armed.  The first of the Winterlong re-mix albums will be released as a bonus disc that will come with the CD release of Winterlong mastered by Angel Marcloid (aka Fire-Toolz).

Winterlong is out on CD/LP/Digital from Profound Lore Records on June 17th, 2022.

In the riptide of this life

Would be so nice

Just to know what tomorrow will bring…

It’s been nearly three-and-a-half years since the release of SRSQ’s solo debut Unreality, and just as long since the release of Amends, the final parting gift from her band Them Are Us Too. Following her last release, the 2020 stand-alone alone single “Temporal Love”, SRSQ returns with “Someday I Will Bask in the Sun”, the first track from her forthcoming second studio album due out this spring via Dais Records.

SRSQ (pronounced seer-skew), the solo moniker of Kennedy Ashlyn, is an artistic force of nature. With her formidable talent channeled through a multi-octave range and uncanny knack for aural poetry, her music is as beautiful as it is distinct and emotionally powerful.

In the years since the release of Them Are Us Too’s debut Remain, which features the shimmering euphoric anthem “Eudaimonia”, Kennedy’s life has been fraught with tragedy and personal struggles. However, her anguish is expressed within the dynamic range of emotions she cathartically transmutes through her captivating music, with a repertoire of songs that soar, quiver, quake, and rage—from the depths of darkest sorrow to the heights of illumination.

In this new composition, “Someday I Will Bask in the Sun”, Kennedy explains that the track is meant to be “a song of reflection, acceptance, and the possibility of hope. It is about coming to terms with the inevitability of harsh emotional cycles without subscribing to a predication of doom. The song reflects on the perpetuity of turmoil, but embodies the notion of surfing – rather than being pummeled by – an ever crashing wave.”

With a break beat drum and bass sound, accented with sighing strings, and a buzzing/horn guitar chimera that refrains the vocal melody, the song is unlike any of Kennedy’s previous material, yet feels like a natural progression. The sound expands and transitions from the gauze-like fantasies of Cocteau Twins to the buoyant summer daydreams of The Sundays, run through a distinctive late 90s filter. Her vocals are crisp, vibrant, soaring, and fluttery, and yet brimming with wistful sorrow—ready to be shed as a prelude to a brighter dawn for her and us all.

Listen to “Someday I Will Bask in the Sun” below:

“Someday I Will Bask in the Sun” was produced by Chris Coady (Beach House, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV on the Radio) and is the first taste of what is sure to be one of the best albums on the horizon this spring.

In the meantime, listen to the song now via Dais Records, and across all digital platforms.

SRSQ will be touring in Europe and the UK this spring with RIKI.
