The industrial musician, MVTANT, never slows down. With Low Culture Metal Bodies—out on July 7th—the Texas-based artist just announced their remixes and covers album on Dream Recordings alongside an extensive North American spring/summer tour (dates below). The album is stacked with remixes by prevalent players in the dark scene such as Spike Hellis, Kontravoid, Physical Wash, Kris Baha, Multiple Man, Blank Hellscape and Dread Risks—all guaranteeing to bring their own specific aesthetic of EBM, industrial or noise into the foggy MVTANT realm.

Alongside remixes, the LP includes cover songs performed by MVTANT. (We all remember their reinterpretation of Suicide‘s “Ghostrider” with its steady pulse and sultry atmosphere.) The post-punk band, Gang of Four, with their 1978 track “Damaged Goods” seems fitting to be the subject of MVTANT’s newest endeavor. Originally upbeat and danceable, “Damaged Goods” is now altered into a gruesome electronic ballad that could be a love song—but only in some deranged dimension.

MVTANT’s transformation of the song, brought on by its sensual vocals and detuned synths, adds an eeriness to the song’s very foundation. In doing so, the lyrics that perhaps weren’t originally so overt in their perverseness, now border on the obscene. Your kiss so sweet, your sweat so sour.

Embark on an enthralling exploration of avant-garde underground music artistry at this year’s highly anticipated TERMINUS Festival, returning triumphantly to the vibrant city of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, from July 27-30, 2023. This year’s fest showcases some of the best and most innovative industrial, darkwave, and post-punk acts in the scene today.

Headlining the festival are EBM music titans Nitzer Ebb, and synth-pop luminaries Beborn Beton, with the lineup rounded out with a well-curated assortment of newer talents, including the ethereal SRSQ, Swedish synth-pop duo Ashbury Heights, hypnotic NNHMN, Ultra Sunn, Spike Hellis, Patriarchy, and many more.

Don’t miss out on this extraordinary celebration of cutting-edge music. For more information and to secure your tickets when they become available, visit www.terminus-festival.com.

Here are a few acts to check out while lurking about Calgary during this year’s festival:

Beborn Beton

Behold the exquisite sounds of this legendary German synthpop band, born in 1989 from the inspired minds of vocalist Stefan Netschio, keyboard player and drummer Stefan Tillmann, and keyboard player Michael Wagner. With their debut album Tybalt, released in 1993, the band cemented their place in the annals of electronic music history, drawing upon the best tracks from their first three years together to create a timeless masterpiece that was met with resounding acclaim and adoration from fans and critics alike. With a sound that is both evocative and enchanting, this band continues to captivate listeners around the globe.

SRSQ

SRSQ (aka Kennedy Ashlyn)’s unique songwriting turns her private struggles and sorrows into stirring, redemptive anthems. Her multi-octave range embodies tempest and triumph, the darkest nights breaking into brightest dawns, proving her a musician of elemental force.

Ultra Sunn

Hailing from the heart of Brussels, this post-punk/electro duo formed in 2019 by Sam Hugé (Fantøme) and Gaelle Souflet. Together, they create a captivating sound that combines Sam’s deep and resonant vocals with Gaelle’s meticulously crafted analogue synthesizers and industrial drum machines. As astute observers of the world around them, this dynamic duo creates pulsating, luminous, and hypnotic anthems that tackle important topics such as gender equality, self-improvement, combating street harassment, and fighting against anxiety, all imbued with a potently positive energy.

Harsh Symmetry

Emerging from the depths of Sacramento, California comes the hauntingly beautiful sounds of Harsh Symmetry, the ethereal darkwave project of the gifted musician Julian Sharwarko. With a unique sound that blends nostalgia and revivalism, Sharwarko’s spellbinding electronic compositions conjure up a mood of melancholic gloom. Reminiscent of legendary artists such as Dave Gahan, Cinder, Julian Cope, and Human League’s Phil Oakey, Sharwarko’s mournful vocals take center stage, weaving a mesmerizing sonic tapestry that will leave you spellbound.

Patriarchy

Patriarchy, hailing from the sprawling metropolis of Los Angeles, break down the age-old societal barriers that have held us back for far too long. Their music revels in the eerie and unsettling, delving into the deepest depths of the human psyche. With their fierce, uncompromising sound, Patriarchy leaves an indelible mark on the listener, challenging them to confront the darkness that lurks within and embrace the weirdness that sets us free.

Spike Hellis

Prepare to be blown away by the phenomenal sounds of Spike Hellis, an electrifying EBM duo from Los Angeles. Comprised of Cortland Gibson and Elaine Chang, their old-school style is a force to be reckoned with, channeling the darkest recesses of the human psyche and spreading their gospel of disenchantment and sarcasm far and wide. With a sound that is both blistering and unrelenting, Spike Hellis announces their arrival with a sense of urgency and conviction.

The lineup for TERMINUS Festival 2023 also includes:

  • Nitzer Ebb
  • Backxwash
  • Ashbury Heights

Nearly a year after the release of Spike Hellis‘ debut self-titled LP (which also topped our Best of 2022 year end list), the Los Angeles-based duo announce a massive North American tour of nearly 40 dates from the end of March through May, with a date that includes Vancouver’s Verboten Festival. Several other beloved artists will act as support along the way including Secret Attraction, LLORA, Void Vision, Mother Juno, Moon 17 and Club Music.

EBM powerhouses, Cortland Gibson and Lainey, are undoubtedly one of the hardest working bands in the scene with their nonstop schedule of show dates—and their live performance is one of the most exciting. The intensity of Spike Hellis onstage is energetic, raw and legitimately insane with their custom made, multi-level setup. View the schedule below to find a city near you.

To sugar coat the tour buzz, Spike Hellis has additionally announced their remix album, Altitude Sickness, out on May 26th. The lead single is a remix by Chris Normal of Normal Bias and Multiple Man whose instantly recognizable grooves soften the sharp edge of “Mouth.”  The song’s mysterious atmosphere wraps around Lainey’s vocals and takes grip throughout, while its insatiable beat makes for a club-ready gem. “Baby look at you, setting your hook in my mouth – Reel me in, rip it out.”

Los Angeles duo Spike Hellis, comprised of Cortland Gibson and Elaine Chang, is a phenomenal old-school style EBM act that has just released their excellent self-titled full-length album via their own imprint Over-Pop.

Interestingly enough, Spike Hellis did not initially set out to create an album, yet the resulting record was a pure product of pandemic lockdown: “the libraries were filling up, there were no patterns left to chain on the sequencers or any space to save new patches to the synths—and there are many synths.”

With no live show bookings, the band decided to go on hiatus, and relocated their rehearsal space to the San Gabriel Valley. With no rush to resurface, and plenty of time to revise and polish, they found their songwriting evolving into something more intentional.

The prime theme of the album, created with the idea to jolt the listener, is about taking challenging times of despair, and coming through the other end with hope and optimism.

The album is one of chaotic, disjointed energy peppered with Chang’s cries of despair and need to regain footing, particularly with the opener, “Control (Rage)”, “a layered, firm-handshake body-music track designed to hijack the amygdala.” While presented as a song of despair, optimism and determination shine through in the final line as the question is taken back and turned into a statement, “Watch me regain control.”

“Flight” is more techno-tinged, melding spoken word with rubber band funk beat, as lyrical instructions for escaping a dream are barked out at various frequencies.

Photo: Mario Lopez Viveros

Slices” moves into the territory of that liminal space shared by industrial, techno and early hip-hop, a political funk jam worthy of the dance floor as well as the protest march., the funky first single leads into its supplementary counterpart,  “Stitches: features spoken samples of William S. Burroughs over eerie Emulator arpeggios, bringing to mind Allen Ginsburg’s cameo in Cornershop’s classic, “When The Light Appears”.

Teardrops (Kisses)”, a deceptively light-hearted on a sonic level, brings to the surface themes of social punishment and isolation to reveal conflict at its core. Chang and Gibson trade off cries of shame and humiliation in the midst of distorted synths swirling in polyrhythms. It brings to mind Carl Stephenson’s psychedelic trip-hop project Forest For The Trees, if set in an episode of Miami Vice. “Help” is a straightforward freestyle number with a pinch of synth-pop emulating Cabaret Voltaire.

“Cause of Death” takes Spike Hellis from the dance floor to the speedway; a nod to taking risks and enduring hardships in favor of triumph in the long run.

The minimalist closing track “Mouth winds its way through a four-verse build as Chang’s pitch-shifted voice softly narrates a catch-and-release scenario in which baiting fish is used as an allegory for manipulation.

Listen to the Spike Hellis’ self-titled debut below and find it digitally here:

Since finishing the album, Spike Hellis has gotten back on the road, completing their first US tour in fall 2021, followed by a west coast tour in early 2022. They’ve performed in good company with Choir Boy, Fearing, Soft Kill, Plack Blague, Riki, Nuovo Testamento, Pixel Grip, Twin Tribes and Body of Light.

This spring, they will be serving as a supporting act alongside Kontravoid on ADULT.’s 2022 North American tour.

Actually Huizenga, the self-proclaimed queen of industrial snuff pop is a force of nature. A tongue-in-cheek edgelord who unleashes upon the world a unique brand of shock rock that lampoons the sleazy tropes of the music industry, warped within the camp reality of her band Patriarchy.

Following a legendary performance at Substance Festival in Los Angeles this past November, we caught up with Actually, and her bandmates AJ and Bradley, on the way to their second show with this lineup. The three were traveling through Bat County via a Route 66 road trip to perform with rising EBM Stars Spike Hellis at Oddfellows in Las Vegas.

Spike Hellis’ Lainey and Cortland recently appeared in the NSFW video for Patriachy’s “Lock Jaw”.

“They are in a video shot during lockdown where they are torturing us,” Says Actually, “It’s awesome that they did it, because they’re like, our sister band.”

Watch the video below:

During our phone interview with Patriarchy, we passed the time playing some Anti-Valentine’s Day games as they traveled down the legendary highway, passing derelict military tanks, and other oddities by the roadside.

First, we asked the band what would they write in their Tinder bios.

“Yeah, well I would never have a Tinder profile, ” says Actually,  “but I guess my ideal date would be a day around a renaissance fair. Yeah. And he could pay a little extra so we can have a court with Queen Elizabeth. Oh, and I love a turkey leg or two.”

Meanwhile, AJ’s answer: “drummer looking for a classy lady who’s passionate about responsible recycling and trash…uh, junk removal, and long rides on my Harley”.

Bradley’s concise answer: “Just a guy with two hands!”

Photos by Ryan Aylsworth

We next asked the band What would be their choices for a game of F***, Marry, Kill…

What ensued was a description of the band participating in a bizarre killing sex frenzy ala Bed, Bloodbath, and The Beyond the Grave home decor. Complete with Ed Gein with human skin lampshades, as well as matching jackets and gloves, and references to Christian Death’s “Spiritual Cramp”

Actually, however, declared that she would marry herself. More on that in a bit.

Next up the game was what would your newspaper “Desperately Seeking” dating ad look like?

Actually: “Female looking for a real vampire. Like. R E A L.  Like in real life. I’d want for someone who thinks they’re a real vampire to come to me, but, you know, they would probably end up being a total nerd like me, unless it’s, like, Only Lovers Left Alive. That’d be awesome.

Meanwhile, AJ’s answer was very patriotic:

“Blue-collar joe looking for a red-blooded American princess. Black. White. doesn’t matter. Just be clean.”

Photos by Ryan Aylsworth

We then tried to talk about “Missed Connections”, but it turned into a recitation of James Joyce’s flatulent love letters to his wife and muse Nora Barnacle.

So the next question we asked was “If you were to get hitched in Las Vegas, what aging musician or impersonator of such would preside over the ceremony?

Actually: “That’s a hard one, because I think maybe I would have Cher. She never ages. That’s why.

There’s your vampire right there!

Yeah! So that’s my choice. I would love to be married by her. I don’t care to who as long as she’s doing it. Oh, yeah. I’ve got to marry myself. So then Cher can also preside over the f*cking and the killing too.

AJ’s choice was to ironically be married by Bruce Springsteen to “Born in the USA”, and Bradley’s choice was Dog the Bounty Hunter.

Photos by Ryan Aylsworth

Our next question was “What songs would be your picks for a Valentine’s Day mixtape?

Actually:  “The theme song from Braveheart.”

Speaking of themes, how about the themes on the new album?

Actually: “It’s a lot less intellectual than my last album because it’s all about what I thought love was supposed to be according to lust that I didn’t know before. If that makes sense.  I was sad over some sexual experiences that I thought were love, and I decided to write about it instead of crying.”

The next single coming out is called “Suffer”.

Photos by Ryan Aylsworth

During your upcoming shows, what other songs from the new album can couples inappropriately make out to?

Actually: “Man for You. It’s a new one and it’s just very sweet. That’s a good one to make out to. To F*** to could be any one of them.”

Can you tell us about working with Kris Baha on the Lock Jaw remixes?

Actually: “I was like in quarantine and I would work out to Kris Baha’s music. And I wrote him and said, “I love your music I work out to it!”. And he loved the song so much he did two remixes!”

“He’s so sweet. And he leaves cute voice memos with an Australian accent.”

Anything else to plug?

AJ: “So we are soon going to be releasing a sample pack for all young aspiring producers and tenured programmers alike. A full suite of drum samples overlaid with Actually’s “Erotic Noise”. So you can expect to find kick drums expertly recorded with deep guttural grunt. You can hear an orgasmic whimper over a high hat.

You can hear a merry crack of a snare with a tight little gap. And other percussive industrial sounds expertly recorded with great intention and attention.”

Actually: “We’re going to show it off at NAMM *LAUGHS*.”

The Interview ended suddenly as an onslaught of crows surround the car as Patriarchy pulled into a rest stop for a non Fet-Life version of a pee break.

Photos by Ryan Aylsworth

Patriarchy have several tours yet to be announced for 2022. The next single “Suffer” comes out the first week of March.

Live dates are confirmed at the moment:

Like flossing with razor wire
Smile for the world

The wait for new Spike Hellis music is finally over. Since the release of their Crisis Talk EP from 2020, the LA-based duo, Cortland Gibson and Elaine Chang (who formed the band on Halloween of 2019), have been annihilating audiences with their bombastic stage performance as a work up to their self-titled LP out on their imprint label, Over-Pop, this April.

“Slices,” the first single off the album, is just as hyper and danceable as their live sets, containing just the right amount of aggression and lightness—a tactic many beloved Wax Trax! artists utilized for their club hits. With sounds that are compared to the short-lived Ministry side project PTP (specifically “Show Me Your Spine”), and the cheerier side of Portion Control, “Slices” holds a punch as it only clocks in at just over two minutes. The severity of the beat alongside the bassline’s groove catapults the track into hysterics. “Lets talk about money and power,” Gibson roars, as samples littered alongside the vocals tell a story of virtue and greed.

“Slices” is all impact, no filler. Watch below:

Their concoction of industrial, EBM, and Gary Numan-worthy synthpop elements—yes, the Spike Hellis LP is all of these things—makes them distinct any other current act. Spike Hellis is out on April 1 and physical copies will be available on cassette and vinyl (vinyl pre-order TBD). Their “Adversary Network” West Coast tour begins in February and includes several dates with ADULT.

A testament to the enduring sounds of post-punk, industrial, new wave, synth-pop, and experimental – Substance features today’s most compelling acts as well as the pioneers who forged the way.

It’s been impossible to ignore the (well-deserved) hype around the second annual Substance Festival that will be held in Los Angeles from November 26 to November 28. The festival, which spans across three stages on three different floors of the historic Belasco Theatre, taps into every underground genre—there is literally something for everyone. From historic acts, to well-established ones, Substance connects the dots between the past and the future. Here, up and comers collide with some of North America’s most cherished artists.

Each day is carefully curated to satiate a variety of tastes—whether it’s metal, EBM, post-punk, or synthpop—the festival has made it easy to discover new acts to fall in love with while, at the same time, experiencing performances by your favorite bands. Let’s take a preview of what’s in store next weekend.

Friday, November 26 eases us into Substance Festival with a serious lineup. Headliner Chelsea Wolfe has become a staple in the dark underground with her specific blend of doom metal, neofolk and ethereal music. Alongside her, metal goddess King Woman will hold down the throne as Kid Kongo (The Gun Club, The Cramps, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds) will provide a raucous performance with his band T.P.M.B. Try not to miss the Chicago-based trio, Pixel Grip, with their EBM-infused dance or locals, Aurat, whose most recent release of deathrock-cum-EBM is a favorite here at Post-Punk.com.

It’s hard to imagine where certain types of music would be without Nitzer Ebb. The EBM band, who hailed from the UK in the early 1980s, are found in DJ sets and on dance floors most nights (no matter the genre). As headliners on Saturday, expect nothing but hard-hitting running basslines and percussion under Douglas McCarthy’s aggressive shouts. It might be hard to parse out which bands to see on this day since the lineup is so solid but, if possible, catch the upcoming new wave act, Second Skin, and the Italo darlings, Nuovo Testamento. Other highlights will be the post-punk power of Fearing alongside VR Sex, Some Ember, Future Blondes, and Squid, who are appearing on the heels of two sold-out shows in LA.

The final day, Sunday, November 28th, is another that will be difficult to maneuver simply because of the quality in the artist lineup. From Lydia Lunch Retrovirus, to the New Romantic Riki, the last day of the festival boasts legends and newcomers alike. The noisy electro band, HEALTH, will headline the evening, so be sure to save up energy for the entire day. Additionally, the synthy post-punk glory and gloom of Choir Boy will be a highlight as well as Debby Friday, who is one to check out with her cross-genre music. For industrial fans, Lower Tar, O/X, and Spike Hellis will be ones not to miss. Finally, D.I.N. is a charming synth act that will steal your heart without question—trust me on this one.

While it might be a bit overwhelming, Substance has curated a Spotify playlist so you can become more familiar with their artists. Check it out below:

“We wanted something that’s falling apart.”

Anyone else ever have one of those bizarre public restroom nightmares…you know, THOSE kind, where you’re exposed to the elements: vulnerable, panicked and grossed out, and embarrassing madness ensues? When the worst you have to offer is overflowing like Niagara Falls from the porcelain throne, and you’ve gotta explain it to the janitor and other stall dwellers?

Detroit legends ADULT. plays into that paranoia in a new self-directed video performance art piece, showering us with the golden “Fools (We Are…)” a bizarre dystopia of a synth-punk track. It’s a perfect metaphor for…*gestures wildly at the world*….everything. Social media. Mental health crises. Environmental disasters. The 24-hour news cycle. Rampant capitalism. In the end, we’re all trying in vain to plunge out what’s keeping us stuck and overwhelmed. It calls to mind the same paranoia in Tuxedomoon’s classic clip for Jinx, the frantic, Sisyphean attempts to clean up a mess we made ourselves.

(Make a mental note to stock up on Pine-Sol after watching this one!)

ADULT., aka Nicola Kuperus and Adam Lee Miller, announces the release of Becoming Undone, their ninth official full-length. Simultaneously rejecting and reflecting planetary discord, they embarked on writing this album in the latter half of 2020, against a backdrop of unprecedented flux and seismic isolation.

Kuperus’s vocals sound alternately indignant and possessed, decrying the crimes, fears, and failings of a deluded world. The band’s chemistry crackles with revulsion and strobe-lit dissent, equal parts exorcism and denunciation. “Humans have always been pretty terrible,” Kuperus explains. “But every year the compromises of culture just accelerate.”

Reconnecting with legacy influences like the politicized industrial percussion of Test Department and the queasy miscreant synthetics of TG’s 20 Jazz Funk Greats, the duo sparked a series centered on themes of impermanence and dissonance. “We weren’t interested in melody or harmony since we didn’t see the world having that,” Miller states.

Becoming Undone is also freighted with a more personal pain, as Kuperus’ father passed away during the height of the pandemic, just before the album took root. As his hospice caretakers, she and Miller faced the banality of finality, surrounded by objects drained of meaning, “the joy of having a body, but also the drudgery of having one.”

Becoming Undone is out on February 25, 2022, through Dais Records.
